Here Are The 2020 Florida Film Critics Circle Nominations!

The Florida Film Critics Circle announced their nominees for the best of 2020 earlier today!

All I can say is “Thank you, Florida, for doing the right thing!” Seriously, the best films of 2020 should be announced in December of 2020 and January of 2021. This whole extended eligibility window that a lot of groups are doing because of the pandemic is idiotic.

Another thing that I’ve noticed is that the late Brian Dennehy has been getting some critical support for his final performance in Driveways. (I’ll be seeing Driveways next week.) It would be interesting if both Denney and Chadwick Boseman landed nominations. I’m not sure which year holds the record for the most posthumous nominations but, if both Boseman and Denney were nominated for Oscars, it would be the first time that there was more than one posthumous acting nominee.

Here Are The Nominees of the 2020 Indiana Film Journalists Assosciation!

Bad Education

The Indiana Film Journalists Association (IJA) has announced their nominees for the best of 2020! They’ll be announcing the winners on December 21st!

What I like about these nominations is that there’s a lot of them. 2020 may have been a difficult year for many but there were a lot of good films released and it does seem kind of silly (as it does every year) to limit things to some sort of arbitrary number. Why only nominate 10 films when you could nominate 20 or 30? Many of the nominees below will appear on my own personal best lists in January.

The other thing that I like about these nominees is that the include films like Bad Education and Mangrove. There’s some debate as to whether or not these films should be considered Oscar eligible. I feel that they should be so it’s nice to see that the folks in Indiana agree with me!

The Boston Society of Film Critics Honors Nomadland

Like all things this year, 2020’s Awards Season is a bit strange. Because the Academy foolishly decided to extend the Oscar-eligibility window to February, several groups sold out and moved their annual awards back as well. The National Board of Review, for instance, won’t be giving out their awards until February or something stupid like that.

Fortunately, some groups — like the Boston Society of Film Critics — are continuing to honor the best of 2020 at the end of 2020. I love these groups because they’re reminding us that these awards are supposed to be about the movies and not about influencing the Academy. I mean — seriously, the best films of 2020 should be films that came out in 2020, not films that came out in 2020 and the first two months of 2021.

On that note, earlier today, the Boston Society of Film Critics announced their picks for the best of 2020.

The PGA Gives New Life To Sicario and Straight Outta Compton!

Here Are The Confusing San Diego Film Critics Society Nominations!

The San Diego Film Critics Society announced their nominees for the best of 2015 and … well, there’s a little bit of confusion. As Paddy Mulholland of Screen on Screen points out, the San Diego film critics did not list their nominees alphabetically. But, at the same time, the SFDC hasn’t acknowledged that the nominees were listed as a ranked slate either. So, when they list Ex Machina as their first nominee for Best Picture and Brooklyn as their second, were they announcing that Ex Machina was their pick for best picture and Brooklyn was the runner up? Or did they just decided to randomly list the nominees?

The official winners will be announced on December 14th, at which point we will have clarity!

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Goes Mad For Max But Even Madder For Spotlight!

Boston and New York were not the only critics to vote today! The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their picks for the best of 2015 as well! Mad Max: Fury Road won best director but Spotlight won best picture with Fury Road as the runner-up. In other words, the LAFCA liked Fury Road but decided to play it safe. Let’s not forget that this is the same group of people who once named The Descendants best picture with The Tree of Life as the runner-up.

(Dear award-giving groups: Just so you know, playing it safe is really freaking boring.)

Here Are The 2015 Independent Spirit Nominations!

Here are the 2015 Independent Spirit Nominations! That’s right — Oscar season is officially here! Soon, we will reach the point where every day, another group will be announcing their picks for the best of 2015 and the Oscar race will start to become a lot less cloudy. Until then, we can look at the Independent Spirit Nominations and try to figure out what they all mean in the big scheme of things.

The two big indie best picture contenders — Carol and Spotlight — were nominated for multiple awards. That’s to be expected. If any film is going to benefit from the Spirit nominations, it will probably be Anomalisa, which is starting to look more and more like it might be a dark horse to score a best picture nominations. As well, the Spirit nominations may serve to remind Academy members that Beasts of No Nation is one of the best films of the year.
