Music Video of the Day: Burn by Nine Inch Nails (1994, dir by Hank Corwin and Trent Reznor)

I like Burn, even though it’s not exactly subtle song.  I mean, Trent Reznor has never exactly been the most low-key of songwriters but Burn is a bit heavy-handed by even his standards.  That said, it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it and it’s fun to music to play while you’re setting a fire or trying to freak out a boomer.

The video was apparently included on a special VHS tape of Natural Born Killers.  And now it’s on YouTube so watch it while you can because I have a feeling this video will probably get yanked down for copyright reasons in another month or so.  Stuff like that just makes me want to burn it all down.  The video pretty much follows the Natural Born Killers aesthetic.  It’s a type of style that’s good for music videos but a bit much for a 2 hour-plus film.  Natural Born Killers is one of those films that I always get bored with before it ends but the soundtrack’s pretty good.

The St. Louis Film Critics Association Names A Star Is Born The Best Of 2018

On Sunday, the St. Louis Film Critics Association announced their picks for the best of 2018!  While A Star is Born hasn’t quite dominated the precursor season in the way that many expected that it would, it still managed to win over St. Louis.

Black Panther Is A Favourite With The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society

The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, which is one of the newer critics groups, announced their nominees for the best of 2018 earlier today!  Not only did they really like The Favourite but — as you might expect from a group of online critics — they also embraced Black Panther.  Which is good because, if Black Panther‘s going to make history as the first comic book movie to score a best picture nomination, it’s going to need the critical precursor support that wasn’t given to Deadpool, Wonder Woman, or Logan.

Here Are The Eddie Nominations! Where’s Spotlight?

So, here’s the thing…the Eddie Awards are a pretty big deal.  The Eddies are given out by ACE, the American Cinema Editors and they are meant to honor the best edited films of the year.  The ACEs are also considered to be a pretty good precursor of what will be nominated for (obviously) Best Editing and Best Picture.

And here’s the thing — it’s rare that a film wins Best Picture without receiving, at the very least, a nomination for Best Editing.  Birdman managed to do it (and it’s odd that Birdman was snubbed for Best Editing since the editing was probably the only thing that kept Birdman from just being a pretentious mess).  However, Birdman was the exception to the rule.

What’s interesting is that Spotlight — which has dominated the critics awards — was snubbed by the Eddies.  What does this mean?  It might not mean anything.  Or it could mean that Spotlight is more popular with the critics than with the industry people who will actually be voting for the Oscars.

(The same thing happened with The Social Network a few years ago.)

What was nominated?  Check them out below and notice that Sicario — a darkhorse that I would love to see nominated — got the nomination that a lot of people were expecting to go to Spotlight.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Goes Mad For Max But Even Madder For Spotlight!

Boston and New York were not the only critics to vote today!  The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their picks for the best of 2015 as well!  Mad Max: Fury Road won best director but Spotlight won best picture with Fury Road as the runner-up.  In other words, the LAFCA liked Fury Road but decided to play it safe.  Let’s not forget that this is the same group of people who once named The Descendants best picture with The Tree of Life as the runner-up.

(Dear award-giving groups: Just so you know, playing it safe is really freaking boring.)
