Back in the day, my favorite boxer was Britain’s own Naseem Hamed, a flamboyant showman who always turned his entrance into a production but who could also back up his ego in the ring. A lot of my friends couldn’t stand Prince Naseem, as he was known, and they used to watch HBO Boxing specifically hoping to see him lose. In retrospect, he was one of the last of the genuinely entertaining boxers.
Giant, which has already been released to generally positive reviews in the UK, stars Amir El-Masry as Hamed and Pierce Brosnan in the role of Hamed’s trainer, the legendary Brendan Ingle. Judging from the just-released trailer, Brosnan, who always been the most underrated of all the actors who played James Bond, is almost unidentifiable in the role of Ingle.
Giant will be released in the U.S. later this year.
Constantin Film really could use a win when it comes to the Resident Evil movies. Despite veering off the path of most Capcom’s video game franchise, their movies were both successful (to a degree) and enjoyable. Though I didn’t catch 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, my cousin tells me it’s pretty awful.
I woke up this morning to find Zach Cregger’s developed his own entry to the series, and his name alone is enough to spur a bit of excitement. As the director of 2022’s Barbarian and 2025’s Academy Award Winner (for Amy Madigan), Weapons, he has an idea of how to bring a bit of horror on the screen. Add to that, Darius Wolski (The Crow, Dark City, Alien: Covenant) is handling the cinematography. Maybe they’re on to something here?
It looks like the film takes place in a snowy area, and I’m not entirely sure it has any real connection to the games (or prior films), but honestly, perhaps a fresh start is the way to go here. The film reunites Cregger with his Weapons star Austin Abrams (that tent fellow), along with Paul Walter Hauser (Fantastic Four: First Steps), Kali Reis (Mercy) and Zach Cherry (Amazon’s Fallout). We’ll find out when Resident Evil premieres in cinemas on September 18th.
Disclosure Day is Steven Spielberg’s latest film. We really don’t know much about it, beyond the fact that it appears to be science fiction and it stars Emily Blunt.
The Super Bowl spot is certainly intriguing. I’m looking forward to unraveling this film’s mysteries.
I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to the Scream films but this is an effective little teaser. Ghostface driving that knife into the wall over and over again? Agck!
I discovered South Korean cinema when I ran across the blu ray for SHIRI (1999) at Best Buy some time around the turn of the century. Making the impulse buy, I discovered SHIRI to be an incredible action film. With my appetite sufficiently whetted, I hopped on the Internet and just started searching for more. The next movie I came across was JOINT SECURITY AREA (2000), another great film. I took notice of the actor Song Kang-ho in both films, so I started watching his career very closely. Soon he was starring in the psychological thriller SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE (2002) and the serial killer film MEMORIES OF MURDER (2003). Not only was Song giving incredible acting performances, he was working for two of the great South Korean directors at the time, Park Chan-Wook and Bong Joon Ho. These two incredible directors were making the best films in South Korean cinema and Song’s fingerprints were all over their best work. Films like THE HOST (2006), THIRST (2009) and SNOWPIERCER (2013) soon followed, culminating in Song’s lead performance in Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar winning film PARASITE (2018), the first foreign language film to ever take home the Best Picture Oscar!
I have now been a fan of Song Kang-ho for over 25 years. He’s still working hard. I just noticed that he has a series that’s streaming on Hulu called UNCLE SAMSIK. I need to check that out. I also noticed that many of his best films are currently available for streaming on so many different platforms… Netflix, Tubi, the Roku Channel, PlutoTV, etc., etc.!
Check out this trailer for MEMORIES OF MURDER. If this doesn’t light your fire, your wood’s wet! Happy Birthday, Song Kang-ho. Thanks for a quarter century of entertainment!
