6 Directors Who I Hope Will Win An Oscar In The Next 10 Years

6. Todd Field

Todd Field has only directed three films over the past 23 years but all three of them have been outstanding.  In The Bedroom is a film that grows in power with each subsequent viewing.  Unfairly overlooked when it was originally released, Little Children is the film that movies like American Beauty and Revolutionary Road can only pretend to be.  And finally, TAR is a film that will probably still be remembered after most of the other best picture nominees have been forgotten.

Todd Field received an Oscar nomination for his work on TAR so, technically, he could be an Oscar winner by the end of tonight.  Realistically, though, it appears that The Daniels have got the award sewn up and Field will have to wait for another opportunity.  I just hope that it doesn’t take Field another 16 years to film a follow-up to TAR.

Here are 5 other directors who I hope win an Oscar over the next ten years!

5. Joseph Kosinski

This year, Kosinski deserved a nomination for his work on Top Gun: Maverick.  He didn’t receive one, largely because Top Gun Maverick was viewed as being more of a Tom Cruise movie than a Joseph Koskinski movie.  While Cruise undoubtedly played a huge role in Maverick’s production, I think it’s a mistake to overlook the fact that Kosinski did a great job directing the film, respectfully paying homage to the visual style of the first film while also adding his own little quirks.  With the wrong director, Maverick could have come across like a vanity project for an aging star.  Under Kosinski’s direction, it was a terrific crowd-pleaser and one of the best of the year.

4. Robert Eggers

Robert Eggers seems destined to someday win an Oscar.  The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman were all films that could have fallen apart with the wrong director at the helm.  Instead, Eggers was able to turn each one into a succes d’estime.  Eggers will undoubtedly get his chance to add Oscar winner to his resume, probably sooner than later.

The acceptance speech would be legendary.

2. Michael Bay

Ambulance was good!  I’m slowly coming around to Michael Bay.  Movies have become so self-important lately that it’s kind of hard not to appreciate Michael Bay’s refusal to treat them as being anything other than an excuse to blow stuff up and have a good time.  Plus, Michael Bay winning an Oscar would lead to an epic meltdown on the part of Film Twitter and who doesn’t want to witness that?

  1. Debra Granik

Granik is responsible for two of the best films of the last 15 years, Winter’s Bone and Leave No Trace.  Both of these films took a sympathetic look at life on the fringes of conventional society and both of them introduced an exciting new talent to viewers, Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone and Thomasin McKenzie in Leave No Trace.  Granik is one of those directors who tends to take her time between feature film projects but I still can’t wait to see what she does next!

Richard Linklater

Richard Linklater, the cinematic poet of Texas life, spent 12 years making one film. He took an enormous risk, starting an ambitious project with no guarantee of how it would end or that if would even end up being anything worth releasing. He assembled twelve years of footage and turned it into Boyhood, one of the best films of the century so far. For that, Linklater received the greatest acclaim of his career and, in 2015, he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Director.

Unfortunately, he then lost to a guy who made a gimmicky and pretentious movie about an actor producing a bad play.

My sincere hope is that Richard Linklater will get another chance. Though Last Flag Flying and Where’d You Go Bernadette? didn’t exactly live up to the hopes that some had for them as far as the Oscars were concerned, Linklater is a director who seems to have more than few great films ahead of him. Here’s hoping that, by 2031, the Oscars will have honored Richard Linklater.

Here are five more filmmakers who I hope will soon win their first directing Oscar.

The Safdie Brothers

Good Time and Uncut Gems are two of the most intense films ever made. In fact, they were probably too intense for the Academy, as neither one got the Oscar recognition that they deserved. Hopefully, the Safdies will continue to shock audiences while making great films and the Academy will eventually honor their efforts.

Joe Wright

Joe Wright is a veteran director, one who has directed two best picture nominees — Atonement and Darkest Hour — but who has yet to pick up a nomination for best director. (Personally, I would have nominated him for both Hanna and Anna Karenina.) Wright has two films coming out this year — the long-delayed Woman In The Window and the intriguing Cyrano. Of the two, Cyrano seems like the most likely Oscar contender. I can’t wait to see both of them!

Joanna Hogg

Joanna Hogg is a British director who was responsible for one of the best films of 2019, The Souvenir. She’s got a sequel on the way, The Souvenir Part II, and a murder mystery called The Eternal Daughter. With The Souvenir, she proved herself to be a sensitive director who has a great eye for detail and the ability to capture unforgettable performances. I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.

Debra Granik

Winter’s Bone and Leave No Trace are two films that get better each time that I watch them. Debra Granik was responsible for both. In Winter’s Bone, she directed Jennifer Lawrence in what is still Lawrence’s best performance. In Leave No Trace, she introduced the world to Thomasin McKeznie. Much as with Joanna Hogg, I look forward to seeing everything that she does in the future.

Kelly Reichardt

One of the most consistently interesting and challenging directors around, Kelly Reichardt deserved a nomination this year for her fantastic work on First Cow. Though Reichardt may have been snubbed this time, it’s hard not to feel that the Academy will get another opportunity to honor her.

Finally, I want to mention Emerald Fennell. I didn’t include her on this list because she’s nominated this year. Regardless of whether she wins tonight or not, Emerald Fennell is a filmmaker whose future work I will always make it a point to seek out.

What If Lisa Picked The Oscar Nominees: 2018 Edition

With the Oscar nominations due to be announced tomorrow, now is the time that the Shattered Lens indulges in a little something called, “What if Lisa had all the power.” Listed below are my personal Oscar nominations. Please note that these are not the films that I necessarily think will be nominated. The fact of the matter is that the many of them will not. Instead, these are the films that would be nominated if I was solely responsible for deciding the nominees this year. Winners are starred and listed in bold.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association Embrace Roma, Debra Granik, and Steven Yeun!

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their picks for the best of 2018 earlier today and guess who picked up their award for Best Supporting Actor?

Steven Yeun!

That’s right.  As sad as we all were to see Glenn brutally murdered on The Walking Dead, at least we can find some happiness in the fact that Steven Yeun’s career has prospered since leaving the show.  Yeun won the LAFCFA’s Best Supporting Actor prize for his role in the Korean film, Burning.  The LAFCA liked Burning quite a bit actually.  It also came in second for the Best Picture prize, an award that was won by Roma.

Finally, Debra Granik won Best Director for her work on Leave No Trace, making her the first woman to win the directing prize of a major critics group this year.

The Circle also announced the three finalists for their annual Special Citation Award for under appreciated independent films:

  • “Chained for Life,” Aaron Schimberg’s playfully penetrating satire about onscreen representations of disability
  • “The Endless,” a genre-bending story of emotionally estranged brothers starring and directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead
  • “Madeline’s Madeline,” Josephine Decker’s fluid collision of dream, reality and performance starring powerhouse newcomer Helena Howard

The San Diego Film Critics Society Gives Some Love To Buster Scruggs!

On Firday, the San Diego Film Critics Society announced their nominations for the best of 2018 and, to their credit, they showed a lot of love to the Coen Brother’s fascinatingly strange western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs!

(That’s Buster up at the top of the post.  He’s only in the movie for about 20 minutes but you’ll never forget him.)

Black Panther Is A Favourite With The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society

The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, which is one of the newer critics groups, announced their nominees for the best of 2018 earlier today!  Not only did they really like The Favourite but — as you might expect from a group of online critics — they also embraced Black Panther.  Which is good because, if Black Panther‘s going to make history as the first comic book movie to score a best picture nomination, it’s going to need the critical precursor support that wasn’t given to Deadpool, Wonder Woman, or Logan.
