Happy Valentine’s Day!

This fun little video from Haim features a lot of dancing and was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson! Someday, Anderson needs to direct a feature-length musical. Spielberg can produce that West Side Story remake if he wants but he needs to hire Anderson to direct it.

(Some may point out that it would have made more sense to have picked Anderson’s video for Haim’s Valentine for today’s music video of the day. They would be right, except for the fact that the Valentine video lasts 14 minutes while this one is a brisk 3 minutes and 39 seconds.)

Here Are The Online Film Critics Society Nominations!

The winners will be announced on December 28th.

It’s interesting to note that The Post is almost totally shut out here. One thing I’ve noticed that critics who work for newspapers love The Post. They see it as proof of their importance. Online critics are far less impressed with The Post. They tend to view it as a lament for a dead medium, a somewhat stodgy celebration of the past. Whenever I finally get a chance to see The Post, I’ll let you know who’s right.

For a film that didn’t even have a definite title for most the year, Phantom Thread is starting to look like a strong Oscar dark horse. Yesterday, the Boston Society of Film Critics selected it as the best film of the year!

The New York Film Critics Circle Embraces Lady Bird

On Thursday, the New York Film Critics Circle announced their picks for the best of 2017! For best picture, they selected Lady Bird. If nothing else, that’s a relief to those of us who were scared the entire precursor season would be dominated by The Post.

Music Video of the Day: Daydreaming (2016, dir by Paul Thomas Anderson)

Since Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, Phantom Thread, had a pretty good showing with the National Board of Review yesterday, I figured that I would pick his video for Radiohead’s Daydreaming for today’s music video of the day.

(Raidohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood has, of course, composed scores for many of Anderson’s films, including Phantom Thread.)

As for the video itself, it follows Thom Yorke as he randomly wanders from location to location. Is he dreaming? Is he traveling through time? Is he in a building that just has an extremely odd layout? I guess any solution could be true.

Supposedly, this song was inspired by the end of Yorke’s relationship with Rachel Owen. (Tragically, Owen herself passed away only a few months after this video was released.) Supposedly, if you listen to the song backwards, Yorke appears to be singing, “Every minute, half of my love.” Interpret that however you want. It’s Radiohead, after all.

It’s always interesting how Radiohead can be both so consistently compelling and so consistently depressing at the same time.
