Video Games Are Not To Blame

When I was growing up, I used to love to play Castle Wolfenstein and Doom.  While playing those games, I fired every weapon that I could get my hands on and I killed a countless number of Nazis and demons.

In real life, I have never shot anyone nor have I ever been tempted to.

Later on, I discovered the Grand Theft Auto games.  While playing those games, I’ve stolen a countless number of cars and I’ve run down a lot of people.  Most of them I didn’t mean to run down.  Everyone knows how difficult it is to go in reverse when you’re playing Grand Theft Auto.

In real life, I have never stolen car and I’ve never never run anyone over.  Nor have I ever been tempted to.

That’s because I’ve always known that video games are not real life.  Even when I was a kid, I understood that if someone died in real life, they wouldn’t just respawn and continue playing the game.  I would say that’s true of 99.9% of all gamers.  As for the .1% that doesn’t understand the difference, they have problems that started long before the played their first game.

Whenever there’s a mass shooting or any other traumatic act of public violence, people demand to know how it could have happened.  Video games are always a convenient scapegoat.  Many video games are violent and gamers are easy targets for the media to pick on.  But this idea that little Johnny was perfectly normal until he played Call of Duty or Fortnite is ludicrous and everyone knows it.  When I hear about a school shooter who spent hours playing a violent video game, I don’t care about which game he was playing.  Instead, what I want to know is where were his parents while he was doing this?  Too often video games are blamed because no one wants to admit that they either ignored all of the obvious red flags or they didn’t have the courage to confront what they knew was happening.

Video games are not to blame and neither are gamers.  Using them as a scapegoat is not going to solve a thing.  People with a propensity for violence are always going to seek out ways to be violent.  Banning video games isn’t going to make that type of person any less violent.  It’s just going to inspire him to find a new way to express whatever it is that’s going on inside his head.

Until we get serious and stop looking for easy targets to blame, the shootings like we saw this weekend are going to continue and they’re going to keep getting worse.  Solely blaming video games — as if a mass-produced game is somehow more responsible for an individual’s actions than the individual himself — is not a serious response and anyone doing it is not a serious person.

Happy Moon Day!

(Photographed by Erin Nicole Bowman)

50 years ago today, man set foot on the moon for the very first time.  A total of 12 men have walked on the moon, beginning with Neil Armstrong.  On four of them are still living — Buzz Aldrin, David Scott, Charles Duke, and Harrison Schmitt.  My hope is that someday, I’ll get to see us return.  Not to climb up on my soapbox, but there’s so much out there to be discovered that it seems tragic and foolish to limit our curiosity and our imagination to just one planet.  I hate to think that there may some day be a day when no one will be around to tell the story of personally walking across the Lunar surface.

In honor of Moon Day, watch as Neil Armstrong takes his steps on the moon back in 1969:

Did everyone survive Independence Day?

Happy Independence Day!

Hi, everyone!

So, usually, whenever a holiday rolls around, Doc, the ennui-afflicted TSL Cat, writes a celebratory post.  Every year, I get people asking me how Doc, with his big paws and his lack of a formal education, can handle typing out a 500-word post.  And every year, I say the same thing: “Doc can do anything he puts his mind to!”

That said, I wanted to write today’s holiday post because I do have a very important message that I want to share with anyone who might be reading this.  I share this every year but, judging by the thunderous explosions and crackling bangs that kept me away last night, it needs to be said again.

First off, it’s great that you have fireworks but you know what?  You don’t need to shoot them off in your back yard!  GET OUT OF THE SUBURBS IF YOU’RE GOING TO SHOOT THOSE THINGS OFF!  Go out to the country and drink your beer and blow your hands off out there.  A few years ago, we actually had some drunken idiots who tried to shoot off fireworks in the middle of the street and it’s the closest I’ve ever come to calling the police on anyone.

Seriously, fireworks are fun and America’s great.  But neither one of those is an excuse for being a dick.

Secondly, remember that most animals aren’t going to be aware that today is Independence Day.  What we think of as being a celebration is going to sound like the end of the world to them.  Take care of your pets and make sure they’re safely inside tonight.  Doc’s probably going to spend tonight under my bed, as he often seems to do during the noisy holidays.  Fortunately, after about an hour, he forgets why he’s hiding and instead concentrates on trying to play tag whenever he sees my ankles.

Finally, the sounds of this holiday can bring back terrible memories for some people.  Please keep our veterans in mind before you try to make your neighborhood sound like a war zone.

So, I guess my 4th of July message is this: Be kind.  Be considerate.  Let’s be the best that we can be.

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

To Everyone Up North, The Cat Wishes You A Happy Canada Day!

From all of the writers and the cat here at the Shattered Lens: Happy 152nd birthday, Canada!

O Canada!  How we love you!  It’s not just that your people are nice and your basketball teams are impressive.  It’s not just that your wilderness is beautiful and your cities are gorgeous.  It’s also that so many great movies have been made by or have starred Canadians!  The first Canadian film was produced in 1897 but the Canadian film industry really took off in the 70s and the 80s.  That’s when Canadian directors like David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, and others started to make films that were both uniquely Canadian and, at the same time, universal in their appeal.  At the same time, that’s also when Canadian generous tax shelter laws lured a countless number of low-budget productions to the country.  Though these films were often disguised as being American productions, they gave early work to several talented Canadian actors and technicians.

Here’s just a few of our favorite Canadian films:

The Canadian film industry has continued to grow, giving us everyone from James Cameron and Denys Arcand to Xavier Dolan and  Denis Villeneuve.  Along with some wonderful films, Canada has also given us Degrassi and a countless number of Lifetime movies!  No wonder the flame-haired one loves Canada so much!

So, Canada — Happy Birthday!  Thank you for being you and thank you for not taking it personally that time America tried to invade you back in 1812.  We love you, Canada!

Love you, Canada!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 6/24/19 — 6/30/19

Love you, Canada!

Monday is Canada Day so I spent most of Sunday celebrating by watching Degrassi!  I imagine I’ll do the same tomorrow.  Love you, Canada!

What a week.  On my first night back from my vacation, I got a call from my neighbor and was informed that some strange man had just put a piece of paper on my car’s windshield.  After throwing on some clothes, I ran outside and discovered that I had been given a parking ticket for parking in front of my own house!  (Usually, I park in the driveway but, on Monday, we had company so I did the nice thing and let them have the driveway.)  According to the ticket, I was guilty of “Illegal Parking — Facing Traffic.”

And listen, I get it.  If you’re parking in the city, you need to park so you’re not facing traffic.  But this was a residential street, one that hardly has any traffic.  I mean, at the very least, give me a warning before charging me 60 dollars!

Later, I would learn that I was one of several people in the neighborhood to have been given a parking ticket that night.  Apparently, some good citizen decided to call the police and let them know that something had to be done about all the people parking in the street!

Well, here’s the good thing.  After three days of trying, I was finally able to look up my citation online and I discovered that the charges had been dismissed and the ticket had been reduced to just being a “warning.”  Unofficially, I’ve been informed that all the citations were originally meant to be just warnings but the cop they sent down to the neighborhood apparently screwed up and gave out actual tickets.  On Thursday, I got a “Dear Resident” letter from the police department, saying that all of the “charges” filed against the residents of the neighborhood had been dropped “in the interest of justice.”

Which …. you know, whatever.  As long as I don’t have to pay 60 dollars for parking in front of my house, that’s all that matters to me.  Still, if there was any chance of me becoming any less anti-government this year, this experience killed it.

Anyway, that’s my drama of the week.  In other news, I started my summer job writing for the Big Brother Blog this week!  And I watched some movies and I read a lot of books about traffic law.
