After Last Night, 1917 is your new Oscar front runner!

There were a lot of very important awards given out last night and suddenly, the Oscar race has become much, much clearer. Yes, Parasite is a big contender and it’s certainly a big deal that it won at SAG. It’ll probably win quite a few Oscars. But, as of right now, the front runner for best picture is clearly 1917.

Not only has 1917 won the PGA award but, last night, Sam Mendes won the DGA. 1917 is coming on strong and it’s late release date is definitely working in its favor. It came out just in time to wow the Oscar voters but also late enough that there wasn’t time for any sort of backlash to develop against it. If I had to guess now, I’d say that 1917 is going to win Best Picture and we can at least take comfort in the fact that it’s better than the last Sam Mendes film that won.

Anyway, instead of doing like 30 different posts for each group that met last night, here’s a quick rundown:

The DGA (Director’s Guild of America) — Sam Mendes won Best Director for 1917. Honey Boy’s Alma Har’el won for Best First Time Director. The documentary award went to Steven Bogner and Julia Reichert for American Factory.

Annie Awards (Animation) — Klaus won Best Feature. I Lost My Body won best indie feature.

ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) — Roger Deakins for 1917

USC Scripter Awards (Adapted Screenplay) — Greta Gerwig for Little Women

CAS (Cinema Audio Society) — Best Feature went to Ford v. Ferrari. Best Animated Feature went to Toy Story 4. Best Documentary Feature was won by Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.

So, for all you people making your Oscar bets — well, who knows? Listen, the Oscars are unpredictable. GREEN BOOK WON LAST YEAR, PEOPLE! So, anything’s possible. One thing to remember is that Best Picture is determined by a preferential voting system so it’s a close race between two films, it could easily be everyone’s second choice that wins. And that could mean an upset victory for something like Ford v Ferrari or even Little Women.

But, as for right now, 1917 is the front runner.

The National Society of Film Critics Honors Parasite and Little Women!

Yesterday, the National Society of Film Critics announced their picks for the best of 2019!

Now, it’s not really a surprise that Parasite won best picture because Parasite has been popular with the critic groups this season. For me, what’s more significant is just how well Little Women did, coming in second for Best Picture and winning Best Director for Greta Gerwig. Could this be evidence of a late surge in momentum for Little Women? Or is it just of one those quirks of the awards season? There’s always a tendency to read too much into the results of these contests, especially when the guilds are usually the best precursor to go with.

Anyway, here are the NSFC winners!

Lisa Marie’s Oscar Predictions For December

Well, here we go!

This is my last set of Oscar predictions for the year. With the critics groups and some of the guilds having now announced their picks for the best of 2019, the Oscar picture is now a lot more clear. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Parasite, The Irishman, 1917, and Marriage Story all seem to be guaranteed to pick up a nomination.

I am going to go out on a limb and predict that, despite being ignored at SAG and by the Golden Globes, Uncut Gems will get some nominations as well. Right now, the film just seems to have momentum on its side. Realistically, I’m not a 100% convinced that it’ll be nominated, not the way I am with some other films. It’s divisive film and I’m sure that some people think that rewarding Adam Sandler will just lead to him using his newfound respect to get a theatrical release for the next Grown Ups sequel. But I’m going to take a chance and go with it.

(Of course, Nightcrawler and Jake Gyllenhaal also had a lot of momentum a few years ago and ended up getting totally shut out of the Oscars.)

The Utah Film Critics Association honors Parasite and 1917!

On Sunday, the Utah Film Critics Association announced their picks for the best of 2019 and it was another good showing for Parasite! The film picked up awards for best picture, best screenplay, and best non-English language film. Meanwhile, 1917 took awards for direction and cinematography while Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson took home the acting awards for Rise of Skywalker and Avengers: Endgame …. just kidding! They both won for Marriage Story.

Here are the winners!

Best Picture: Parasite. Runner-up: Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.

Best Achievement in Directing: Sam Mendes, 1917. Runner-up: Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.

The Boston Society of Film Critics Names Little Women As The Best of 2019!

The Boston Society of Film Critics today named their picks for the best of 2019 and they did not pick Parasite or The Irishman for best picture. Nor did the pick Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, 1917, or Knives Out. Instead, the BSFC picked Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, which has — so far — been flying a bit under the awards season radar.

Will this provide a boost to Little Women’s chances or will this be an outlier? We’ll find out soon enough! For now, here are the winners:

The Kansas City Film Critics Circle went their own way earlier today and selected 1917 as the best film of the year! I haven’t seen 1917 yet so I’ll withhold on saying whether it deserved the award more than Irishman or Parasite. However, I have seen Dolemite Is My Name and I am absolutely thrilled that the KCFCC selected the excellent Da’Vine Joy Randolph as best supporting actress!
