Here Are The 2019 Nominations of the Detroit Film Critics Society!

Earlier on Friday, the Detroit Film Critics Society released their nominations for the best of 2019!

Now, back in 2018, the DFCS honored some great films that were overlooked by the Academy, films like Eighth Grade, A Quiet Place, and First Reformed.  I mean, I really, really loved the 2018 DFCS awards.  And you know what?  I’m pretty happy with what they came up with for 2019 as well!  I especially like the nomination for Anna Paquin in The Irishman.  With all the overblown controversy about how many lines she spoke in the film, it is often overlooked that she gave a great performance and, with just the power of her withering glare, pretty much transformed Peggy into the conscience of the film.

Here are the DFCS nominees for the best of 2019!  The winners will be announced on December 9th!

The Satellites Really Like Ford V Ferrari

The Satellite Nominations were announced earlier today and they appear to really, really like Ford v. Ferrari.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “Who gives out the Satellites?”  They are awarded by the International Press Academy.  They should not be mistaken for the Golden Globes, which are given out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.  Instead, the Satellites should probably be considered the Golden Globes’s less popular cousins.  Unlike the Globes, they haven’t really proven themselves to be reliable as a precursor.

Here Are The Hollywood Critics Association’s Nominations For The Best of 2019

The Hollywood Critics Association was, up until a few days ago, known as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society.  Perhaps realizing that HCA just plans looks better than LAOFCS, they announced yesterday that they were changing their name.

They also announced their nominees for the best of films and performances of 2019!  While the HCA may not be one of the major precursors of awards season, their nominations do give a fairly good picture of which films and performances are currently being touted as possible Oscar nominees.

Well, the Oscar season is finally here and it looks like the competition is going to be fierce!  It seems like every day, a new contender is being crowned at yet another festival.  Below, you’ll find my predictions for October but, honestly, it’s still difficult to narrow down all of the possible contenders to just 10 films, 5 directors, and 20 actors.

Lisa’s Way Too Early Oscar Predictions for February

Well, with the 2018 Oscars finally out of the way, we can now shift our focus to the 2019 race.

As of February, that race is totally cloudy.  The predictions below should be taken with a grain of salt because 1) they’re mostly wild guesses and 2) the Oscar race never starts to become clear until after the summer.  You could probably argue that doing predictions this early in the year is a pointless exercise but here we are!

Here’s The Trailer For Rocketman!

So, there’s a biopic of Elton John coming out this year.  It’s called Rocketman and it stars Taron Egerton in the lead role.  Just judging from a lot of the early publicity, it sounds like the hope is that the same audience that made Bohemian Rhapsody a hit will also do the same for Rocketman.

So, does that mean that Rocketman is being set up to be an Oscar contender, just like Bohemian Rhapsody?  It’s hard to say.  (Of course, it should be remembered that most observers were genuinely shocked when Bohemian Rhapsody won the Golden Globe that pretty much launched it as a legitimate best picture contender.)  One thing working against Rocketman as an Oscar contender is that the film is being released at the end of May, which is generally kind of a bad time to be released.

(I know, I know.  Early release dates didn’t harm either Black Panther or Grand Budapest Hotel.)

So, who knows?  All that we can say for sure is that, from what we’ve seen, Taron seems to look the part.  Here’s the trailer that was released earlier this week.
