Richard Linklater

How did Richard Linklater not win the Oscar for Boyhood?

Seriously, Boyhood’s loss to Birdman and Linklater’s loss to Alejandro González Iñárritu were two of the biggest mistakes that the Academy has made since the start of the new century. Linklater spent twelve years filming a movie, with no idea of what the eventual story would be, and he somehow made one of the best and more cohesive films of the 2010s. And somehow, that was not good enough for the Academy.

And while that may not bother the independent-minded Linklater, it does bother me. Here’s hoping the Academy will make it up to Linklater soon. His upcoming film, Hitman, has been critically acclaimed but it doesn’t necessarily sound like Oscar fare. Well, no matter! Linklater will hopefully get his Oscar soon.

Here are five other directors who I hope will be honored in the next ten years.

2. Jeff Nichols

Speaking of directors with possible contenders set to be released, Jeff Nichols could be a contender at the next ceremony for his work on The Bikeriders. Originally, The Bikeriders was set to be released in 2023 but it was delayed by the SAG strike. Ever since Take Shelter, Nichols has been a consistently interesting and intelligent director. I can’t wait to see The Bikeriders!

3. Sofia Coppola

Sofia is a perennial on these lists and I’ll keep including her until she finally wins her Oscar. No one captures the beauty of ennui with quite the skill and visual flair of Sofia Coppola.

4. Celine Song

Past Lives is a film that deserved a lot more love than it received from the Academy. I can’t wait to see what Song does next!

5. Denis Villeneuve

Villeneuve, as of right now, seems like he’ll definitely be a contender next year for his work on the Dune sequel. Even if he’s not remembered at next year’s ceremony, he still seems to be one of those directors who is destined to win sooner than later.

6. Paul Schrader

Seriously, can you imagine the speech he’d give?

Last year, we had Elvis, featuring Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated turn as the rock and roll icon.

This year, A24 and Sofia Coppola will be giving us Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeney as Elvis’s wife. The film is not only based on Priscilla’s memoir but apparently, Priscilla is also credited as an executive producer on the film.

Here Are The 2020 Nominations of the Hollywood Critics Association!

The Hollywood Critics Association has announced their nominees for the best of 2020! The winners will be announced on March 5th, 2021 in a virtual ceremony.

As for the nominees, themselves, it’s pretty much more of the same. Judas and the Black Messiah — which really wasn’t a huge factor during the December and January portion of awards season — seems to be coming on strong in the 2nd half. In this case, it took the Best Picture spot that probably would have otherwise gone to First Cow.

Here Are The 2020 Nominations of the San Diego Film Critics Society!

The regional critics have been busy today!

The San Diego Film Critics Society have announced their nominees for the best of 2020! Perhaps the most interesting tidbit here is that they nominated Black Bear for best picture. So far, Black Bear hasn’t really been spoken of as an Oscar contender but, with the extended awards season and all, that could all change. It’ll be interesting to see if the SDFCS nomination is just an outlier or a sign of critics just now discovering the film. If nothing else, it keeps things interesting.

In other words, it’s a Sofia Coppola film.

Lisa Marie’s Possibly Pointless and Totally Random Oscar Predictions for April

To do Oscar predictions during a pandemic or not?

That’s the question.

Erik Anderson at Awards Watch announced on twitter that he’s not doing his monthly Oscar predictions for April and May. (He is, however, focusing on the Emmys so be sure to visit the site and check out his thoughts!) Over at Clayton Davis’s Awards Circuit, the Oscar predictions have been taken down and replaced by an ominous (though definitely needed) counter of how many people are currently infected with the Coranavirus. As of right now, there’s a lot of uncertainty. Are theaters even going to reopen before the year ends and if they do reopen, will people be willing to run the risk of going outside to see a movie? So many of the big films of 2020 have been moved back to 2021 that one could legitimately wonder whether any of the big “Oscar” films are even going to come out this year. Most ominously, for me, is that we could get hit by a second wave of the Coronavirus. It’s easy to imagine a situation where theaters reopen in the summer and, regardless of how business goes, are forced to close again in December.

The Academy is aware that the future is uncertain. Earlier this week, they loosened the eligibility rules. Films that premiere on VOD or a streaming service are now eligible for Oscar consideration as long as it can been proven that the film would have also gotten a theatrical release if not for the pandemic. I’m not sure how exactly that could be proven but it does show that the Academy is, as of now, planning to give out some Oscars next February.

(Of course, just because the rules have been temporarily loosened, that doesn’t mean that every studio and director is going to want to put their huge blockbusters out on Prime or Netflix or VOD. I doubt Spielberg wants to premiere West Side Story in your living room.)

So, for that reason, I’m going to continue to do my monthly Oscar predictions. Needless to say, these are even more random than usual. The predictions below are also being made on the assumption that theaters will be open in November, December, and January. Again, there are no guarantees, other than perhaps Netflix.
