2015 in Review: Lisa Marie’s 10 Favorite Songs!
Whenever we have visitors here at Shattered Lens HQ, the first thing that they always seem to notice is the wide variety of music being played. Considering the number of contributors that we have working here on any given day, it makes sense. After all, we all have our own individual tastes in music and we’re not afraid to play it loud.
Of course, I’m sure it can be somewhat jarring who is, for the first time, discovering the aural experience of walking down a hallway here at the TSL Building. As you walk by Necromoonyeti’s office, you hear the sounds of metal thunder. Across the hallway, Arleigh might very well be listening to The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. Even further down the hallway, you might hear the blogger known as Jedadiah Leland listening to anything from Nine Inch Nails to Ornette Coleman or maybe you’ll even hear my sister singing along with Beyonce. Eventually, you’ll reach my office and, nine times out of ten, I will be blasting EDM (or occasionally Britney Spears) and dancing, only turning the music down if Leonard Wilson stops by my office to continue our debate as to whether or not Aaron Sorkin is an overrated misogynist.
(Occasionally, if I’m lucky, I can convince Valerie Troutman to come to my office and sing the Degrassi theme song with me. Whatever it takes, I know I can make it through….)
Anyway, my point is that every writer at the Shattered Lens is an individual with her or his own taste in music, movies, and … well, everything. So, when you look at my list of my 10 favorite songs of 2015, you should keep in mind that these are my ten favorite songs and they do not necessarily reflect the musical opinions or tastes of anyone here at the Shattered Lens but me! And, in fact, if you want to see just how eclectic a group we here at the Shattered Lens, be sure to check out Necromoonyeti’s list of his favorite metal albums of 2015!
Anyway, here are my favorite songs of 2015. Notice that I didn’t say “best.” Instead, these are some of the songs that I spent the previous 12 months obsessively listening to. When I make my autobiographical movie about my life in 2015, these are the songs that will appear on the soundtrack!
Honorable Mention: Elle King — Ex’s and Oh’s
Ex’s and Oh’s has pretty much been my song all through 2015. However, the song itself was originally released in 2014 and this is a list of the best songs released in 2015. That said, hardly a day in 2015 went by without my listening to and singing along with this song and there’s no way I can’t include it.
Special Bonus Track Included Because Otherwise There Would Be 11 Songs Listed And Lisa Has A Phobia About Odd Numbers: Ellie Goulding — Love Me Like You Do
And now the list:
10) Adele — When We Were Young
9) Icona Pop — Emergency
8) Kelly Clarkson — Take You High
7) The Chemical Brothers — Sometimes I Feel So Deserted
6) Public Service Broadcasting — Go!
5) Taylor Swift (featuring Kendrick Lamar) — Bad Blood
4) Purity Ring — Bodyache
3) Big Data (featuring Jamie Liddell) — Clean
2) Public Service Broadcasting — Gagarin
1) The Chemical Brothers (featuring St. Vincent) — Under Neon Lights
For my previous picks, check out 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014!
Tomorrow, I will be posting some of my favorite things that I saw on television in 2015!

Here They Are! Lisa’s Final 2014 Oscar Predictions!
Well, it’s been a long and tortured road since I first started this monthly series of Oscar predictions way back in March. Some contenders have faded. Some have come out of nowhere. And some — like Boyhood and J.K. Simmons in Whiplash — have remained consistently strong for the entire year.
Here are my final 2014 Oscar predictions. The actual Oscar predictions will be announced on Thursday.
(You can check out my predictions of March, April, May, June, July, August, October, November, and December by clicking on the links in this sentence!)
Best Picture
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Nightcrawler
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
Best Actor
Bradley Cooper in American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game
Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler
Michael Keaton in Birdman
Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything
(Where’s David Oyelowo? Originally, I did list him but I don’t know. With the guild awards, it seems like Selma is losing momentum and American Sniper is gaining it. I know that a lot of watchers are saying this is due to the Selma screeners being sent out late and that could well be true. Hopefully, I’ll get to see both Selma and American Sniper this weekend but, until then, I can’t offer an opinion on whether either one deserves to be nominated. But it’s hard not to feel as if Selma is not shaping up to be quite the Oscar powerhouse that a lot of us were expecting it to be. We’ll see.)
Best Actress
Jennifer Aniston in Cake
Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore in Still Alice
Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon in Wild
Best Supporting Actor
Robert Duvall in The Judge
Ethan Hawke in Boyhood
Edward Norton in Birdman
Mark Ruffalo in Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons in Whiplash
(I still have a hard time believe that Robert Duvall is going to be nominated for The Judge because Duvall was good but not great and the movie kind of sucked. But, honestly, who else are they going to nominate? Josh Brolin deserves the spot for Inherent Vice but the film is probably a little bit too odd for a lot of voters. Maybe if Unbroken‘s Miyavi or Gone Girl‘s Tyler Perry had a little more screen time, they could make a case. But ultimately, that fifth spot does seem to be Duvall’s.)
Best Supporting Actress
Patrica Arquette in Boyhood
Jessica Chastain in A Most Violent Year
Keira Knightley in The Imitation Game
Emma Stone in Birdman
Naomi Watts in St. Vincent
(I’m going to go out on a limb and predict Watts over Meryl Streep. Why not? There always seems to be at least one surprise acting nominee.)
Best Director
Wes Anderson for The Grand Budapest Hotel
Clint Eastwood for American Sniper
Alejandro G. Inarritu for Birdman
Richard Linklater for Boyhood
Morten Tyldum for The Imitation Game
So there they are! My final “for real” predictions. Tomorrow, I’ll be posting my annual “If Lisa Had All The Power” post, which will be my personal nominations, the films and performances that I would nominate if I had all the power. And then, on Thursday, the Oscar nominations will be announced!

Here Are The 79 Songs That Could Win An Oscar!
Okay, this new is really late but, as always, better late than never!
Last Friday, the Academy announced that 79 songs had been judged to be eligible to be nominated for Best Original Song!
Now, if you know anything about me, you know that I love long lists and playing “what if.” Quite a few Oscar commentators have said that Patty Smith is so obviously going to win the Oscar for her song from Noah that it’s pointless to even speculate about anyone else. Well, that may indeed be the case but hey, it’s still fun to look at all of these possibilities and wonder “What if…” Speculation is never pointless, as long as it’s fun.

Here Are The Golden Globe Nominees!
The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and the big news is that Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken was totally and completely snubbed. Knowing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, I figured that they’d nominate Jolie just to get her and Brad Pitt on the show.
(Does anyone remember when they nominated The Tourist for Best Comedy Film of 2010? For that matter, does anyone remember The Tourist?)
Also, it’s interesting to note that David Fincher was nominated for best director for Gone Girl but Gone Girl itself did not receive a nomination for best picture.
(As of this writing, Sasha Stone has yet to post her analysis on Awards Daily but I’m sure when she does, it will be depressing.)
Anyway, below you can find the Golden Globe nominations for the best films of 2014. (If you want to see a complete list with all of the television nominations, you can click here.)

Here Are The SAG Nominations!
Earlier today, the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced and I love them! Not because I agree with all of them but because they’re a nice mix of the expected and the surprising. Every category had at least one surprise and really, it’s the surprises that make Oscar Season so much fun.
For what they are worth, here are a few observations from yours truly:
When it comes to predicting the actual Oscar nominations, the SAG are usually an excellent precursor. It makes sense — the Actors Branch is the biggest of the Academy’s voting branches and many of the same people who determined the SAG nominees will also be casting ballots for the Academy Awards.
At first, I was really shocked to see that Selma was totally snubbed. However, I then read over at Gold Derby that apparently, because of production delays, a screener of Selma was not available for the SAG voters. So, a lot of the voters made their nominations without having seen Selma.
Foxcatcher did not receive an ensemble nomination but it did receive nominations for Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo. That’s especially good news for Carell, who has yet to be much of a factor in the precursor voting.
Speaking of which, everyone keeps taking about how Foxcatcher hasn’t been a major player in the precursors. What about Unbroken? For a so-called Oscar front runner, Unbroken certainly hasn’t received much from the critics groups.
(I should note that I have yet to see either Foxcatcher or Unbroken so I don’t have an opinion on whether either one of them deserves awards.)
Among the big snubs: Amy Adams for Big Eyes, Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year or Interstellar, Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night, and Oscar Isaac for A Most Violent Year.
My favorite nomination was Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler. I haven’t seen Cake but I was happy to see Jennifer Aniston nominated because it was unexpected. Robert Duvall’s great but wow, was the Judge ever a disappointing movie.
I was shocked to see Naomi Watts nominated for St. Vincent but it actually makes sense. Her role in St. Vincent really was awards bait. And who doesn’t love Naomi Watts? (That said, I thought her performance was a bit cartoonish.)
Both the Grand Budapest Hotel and especially The Theory of Everything are looking more and more like probable best picture nominees.
And here are the nominees:

The Brief Thrill Of The Phoenix Film Critics Nominations
I have to admit that, when I first looked at the just-released Phoenix Film Critics Nominations for 2014, I got really excited. I saw The LEGO Movie listed among the nominees for best picture and I thought to myself, “Oh my God! Could The LEGO Movie be set to be the fourth animated film to score a best picture nomination from the Academy!?”
Seriously, my inner movie trivia lover was so excited!
Then, of course, I remembered that critical recognition doesn’t necessarily translate into Oscar nominations. And I was forced to admit that The LEGO Movie probably will not be nominated for best picture, though it definitely remains a front runner for best animated feature.
But, for a few moments there, I was truly an excited Oscar watcher.
Anyway, here are the Phoenix Film Critics Nominations!
