Horror Scenes I Love: Haute Tension

If there was ever a horror film in the last ten years or so that has garnered so much love/hate responses from those who watched it then I will say that Alexandre Aja’s debut film Haute Tension definitely reign on top. It’s also from this very controversial film (at least amongst genre fans) that my latest “Scenes I Love” comes from.

It’s actually fairly early in the film with a brutally, gruesome kill by the film’s serial killer that helps establish the tone Aja was going for. We have the scene of Cécile de France as Marie unable to go to sleep and hearing the house’s doorbell ring and her bet friend’s father going downstairs to answer. Unbeknownst to everyone in the house it’s a brutish figure played by Philippe Nahon who proceeds to brutalize and decapitate the father in a very ingenious and very bloody fashion.

This scene was quite shocking when it first appeared on the big-screen especially since it was from a French horror film that usually didn’t have such extreme violence. Well, this scene definitely helped establish the arrival of the so-called “New French Extremity” film movement of the 2000’s and which continues on to this day. One nice trivia about this establishing scene for this film is that the man responsible for the visual effects for the death is none other than Giannetto De Rossi who also happened to have done much of the effects work for noted Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci.

Scenes That I Love: Confuse-A-Cat

Being on vacation, I can’t help but worry about how Doc is doing.  For those of you who may not know, Doc is the black cat who owns me and Erin.  Along with being adorable, cute, and lovable, Doc is also the world’s leading expert in the field of feline ennui.  When he meows, he simply says, “Meh,” and it’s not unusual for me to come home and discover that he’s wearing a red beret and chewing on a cigarette holder.

Naturally, it’s hard for me not to worry that he may be stuck in a rut without me being there and I can only hope that, if he is, Erin will take a lesson from today’s scene that I love.  From Monty Python’s Flying Circus, here comes Confuse-A-Cat.

Scenes That I Love: It’s Time To Change!

Since I previously shared two of my favorite scenes from The Brady Bunch Movie, I figured that today I would share one of my favorite scenes from 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel.  In this scene, the Brady kids abduct Tim Matheson and force him to take part in an elaborate musical number.

Enjoy!

Scenes That I Love: Good Time Music!

For the past few days, I’ve been sharing some of my favorite scenes from two of my favorite movies from the 90s — The Brady Bunch Sequel (1995) and A Very Brady Sequel (1996).  I’m sure that some people would say that devoting that much time to two films that spoof a terrible show is a bit excessive.

But you know what?

Excess is underrated.

Before I close the book on this celebration of the Brady Bunch films, I wanted to share one more scene that I love.  In this scene from A Very Brady Sequel, the Bradys remind us that flying should be fun!

Enjoy some good time music!

Scenes I Love: Keep On Dancing All Through The Night!

Yesterday, I featured my favorite scene from 1996’s The Brady Bunch Movie.  Today, my scene that I love is my second favorite scene from that same film.  In this scene, the Brady kids save the day (and their house) with this exciting performance of Keep On.

I love the way that the song just fades out when the Bradys stop to take their final bow.

Scenes I Love: It’s a Sunshine Day!

Hi there!  You may be reading this post on September 22nd (or even later) but I’m sitting here writing it on August 23rd.  That’s because, starting on the 22nd, I will be on vacation for the next two weeks.  Jeff and I will be traveling America, searching for ghosts, adventure, and love!  YAY!

However, fear not, for I will be checking in from the road and I am also writing up and scheduling a few posts ahead of time.  Like this one!

Since this is the start of my vacation, I felt it would be only appropriate to feature a scene that I love specifically because, every time I see it, it makes me feel incredibly happy.  That scene comes from the 1996 film, The Brady Bunch Movie.

The Brady Bunch Movie is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m happy to say that it’s one that seems to pop up on cable every few weeks or so.  In the scene below, the Bradys put on their Sunday Best, go to Sear’s, and let us all know that it’s a sunshine day!

(By the way, I recently noticed that Mr. Brady and Mrs. Brady spend most of this scene handling a vibrator.  It only took me a few dozen times to notice.)

Scenes I Love: Clannad After Story

After people see this scene they will think I’m either crazy or a glutton for heartache for loving this scene. It’s hard to disagree with that statement. There’s a reason why I love this scene from the anime series Clannad After Story and it has less to do with the tone of the scene, but a major reason why anime is not just for kids or about boobs, tentacle rape and all the other things adults in the Western media dismiss the art form for.

This scene from Clannad After Story happens between the series’ main lead in Tomoya who has now come to the realization that he must now make amends to the daughter he left behind to be cared for by his wife’s family. It’s a powerful scene that has brought many to tears from young teen girls to grown-ass men who probably bawled more than the former. One doesn’t even have to have seen the previous season to this anime or any episodes leading up to this scene. The moment itself has enough of a backstory that one cannot help but get caught up in the moment. It’s also a scene that does a great job of emphasizing that bond between parent and child even when the former hasn’t lived up to their responsibilities.

I think if more people watched anime like Clannad After Story their opinions of anime would change for the better and see it in a new and positive light.
