Lisa’s Week In Review: 1/11/21 — 1/17/21

This past week was long but ultimately rewarding.  I didn’t watch as many movies as I should have and I’m going to have to make up for that over the course of this upcoming week but, at the same time, I hosted the I Like To Watch live tweet on Saturday night and, as a result of also hosting both the Friday Night Flix and the Scary Social live tweets, I was also able to introduce a whole new group of people to both Ninja III: The Domination and Messiah of Evil.  Introducing people to new and old things is always a good feeling.

Anyway, here’s what I watched, listened to, and read this week!  I know that I said I was going to start posting my best-of-2020 lists during this upcoming week but it’s going to have to wait for just a little bit longer while I spend the next 7 days catching up on the last few films of the previous year.  (Fear not, time is eternal.)

Lisa’s Week In Review — 1/4/21 — 1/10/21

It snowed today!

I know that, compared to everything else that happened during this week, getting a little bit of snow in North Texas might not seem like a big deal but, for me, it was just what I needed.  It’s been at least two years since the last time it snowed here in Dallas and the fact that it’s finally happened again served as a valuable reminder that life is unpredictable and that’s not a bad thing.

It was earlier this week that it was announced that it would probably snow on Sunday.  Actually, it’s called a “wintery mix,” which is apparently a mix of rain and snow.  Not surprisingly, this led to a neighborhood-wide panic as everyone converged on every nearby grocery store and stocked up with a year’s worth of supplies.  I’m sure that my friends up north would have a good laugh at how we react to the possibility of snow down here.  Of course, we always have a good laugh at how they react to a 75-degree day up there.  Myself, I just can’t believe that houses up north actually have a specific room called “the mudroom.”  I mean, at least give it a better name.  Do they keep mud in there?  I mean, what the Hell?

This morning, it started snowing around 10 am.  It started out as just a few small flakes and then they turned into big white flakes and suddenly, some of it even started to stick to the ground!  (Actually, in the end, very little of it stuck to the ground but, at that moment, I was so excited to see even the barest dusting of snow on the grass that I was convince that the backyard would turn into a winter wonderland within the next 15 minutes or so.  I tend to think of snow as having magical powers.)  When it first started to come down, I was curled up on the couch and watching a movie and I was so excited to see the snow that I jumped straight up and I ran straight outside and stood in the back yard with my head thrown back and my arms spread.  Now, of course, I quickly learned that, when it’s snowing and the temperature is down to freezing, it’s not always a good idea to run outside when you’re only wearing a cotton nightshirt and a bathrobe.  Next time, I’ll at least remember to put on slippers!  (I probably should have already known that but seriously, I can’t put into words just how excited I get when I see actual snow.)

Once I went back inside and got dressed, I walked around in the snow for a while.  It was wonderful.  And before anyone asks, yes, I wore a mask and I took my inhaler and I resisted the temptation to try to start a snowball fight (not that there was really enough snow on the ground to make a snowball).  I played it safe and I managed to walk around the entire neighborhood without slipping on the slick sidewalk.  I also took the time to help one of my neighbor’s cats get inside of their garage.  The snow brought out the best in me, I think.

Unfortunately, the snow stopped falling after a few hours and most of it really didn’t stick to the ground.  (It was cold but just not quite cold enough.)  The towns nearby got a lot more snow than we did and yes, I was a little bit jealous.  But still, at least we got some snow!  It was unexpected and it was beautiful and it was wonderful and, to me, it was a reminder that there’s all sorts of great things out there and they deserve to be celebrated.

This upcoming week, I’ll be catching up with the films of 2020 and preparing my own best of the year lists.  I’ll be watching movies and listening to music and reading books.  I can’t wait to tell you all about it.  And who knows!  It might even snow again!  Hopefully, it’ll actually accumulate this time.

For now, here’s a list of what I watched, read, and listened to over the previous 7 days.  You know how much I love lists! For the record, I started out this weekend with one goal in mind — to watch 13 movies.  I managed to do it, despite taking several hours off so that I could marvel at the snow.  So, I’m a bit proud of myself for that.  Anyway, here we go:

Lisa’s Week In Review: 12/28/20 –1/3/21

The first three days of 2021 have come to close.

Yes, it’s a new year.  This site has now existed for 11 years, which is a thought that just kind of amazes me.  When this site started, everyone was talking about whether or not Avatar was going to be a game changer as far as movies were concerned.  Way back in 2009 when Arleigh started this site, the MCU was still a new thing and horror and fantasy fans were eagerly awaiting the premieres of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.  If I remember correctly, I don’t think anyone was even talking about Star Wars ever being rebooted.  Even Netflix was still kind of a luxury (as opposed to a necessity).  Today, of course, people are wondering whether or not theaters will survive the decade.  Time’s change and, if we’re going to be honest, they change a lot more quickly than we might realize.  In the grand scheme of things, 11 years is not the huge of an amount of time.

So far, my 2021 is going quite well.  You may say that it’s silly to brag about a good three days but, in those three days, I’ve read two books, watched several movies, hosted or co-hosted three very successful live tweets, and I’ve watched a handful of movies.  The year started with rain and freezing temperatures.  The weekend is ending with clear skies and the temperature in the high 50s.  Things continue and life moves forward, regardless of what the latest drama may be.  Ever since the new year, I’ve been listening to a lot of 70s disco.  (I also watched two disco films — Saturday Night Fever and Thank God It’s Friday.  If only Roller Boogie was on Prime, it would have been three.)  I love to dance and I still think the 2020s are going to have more in common with the 1970s America than with 14th Century Europe.

On a final note: last year, I watched a total of 820 films.  My goal for 2021 is a thousand!  I’ve got quite a few films from last year that I need to watch over the upcoming two days so I’m looking forward to getting started on them.

Here’s what I watched, listened to, and read last week:

Happy 2021, I Guess!

Well, it’s finally 2021!

Did everyone have a good New Year’s?  For those of us who spent New Year’s eve at the Texas Offices of Through the Shattered Lens, it was a very, very rainy holiday.  The rain, of course, didn’t stop a few people around here from trying to make a lot of noise.  When I got home from welcoming the arrival of the new year, my neighbor was outside in his front yard, trying to set off firecrackers.  He just couldn’t seem to understand why they weren’t going off.  I was just like, “Hey, dumbass …. it’ been raining for 48 hours straight!”  I didn’t actually say that, of course.  One of my resolutions for the new year is to be nicer and more positive.  So, instead, I just said happy new year.  Later today, I may stick a few pins in a voodoo doll.  I’ll deal with my annoyance in my own way.

Last year, on this date, I made a lot of promises about what we were going to do on this site over the upcoming 12 months.  I would say that we were probably able to keep 70% of those promises.  Unfortunately, the pandemic changed a lot of our plans.  For instance, I was planning on doing a whole new series of Back to School reviews but it just didn’t feel appropriate with so many schools not reopening due to the lockdowns.  By that same token, my plan to review a batch of political movies in the summer became a bit less appealing as the presidential election kicked into full swing.  Once I saw that 2020 was going to be like, “You have to pick either Trump or Biden,” I no longer felt like writing about anything political.

Still, I think we did a lot of good work in 2020 and we’re going to do even more good work in 2021.  What do we have planned for 2021?  If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that life is unpredictable.  I’m hoping to finally do another round of Back to School and Shattered Politics reviews.  I’m also hoping to do another Embracing the Melodrama blogathan.  For this month, I’m planning on catching up with whatever 2020 films I still need to see and review.  I’m also going to be sharing my “best of” and “worst of” lists.  Mostly, though, I’m just planning to review whatever catches my attention.

I hope you’ll join me and the rest of the TSL crew as we explore 2021.  Personally, I still think that the upcoming decade is going to eventually be more like the 70s than the 60s.  People can only be scolded for so long before they say, “Screw this, I’m going to have a good time no matter what.”  But we’ll see.  Who knows what the future holds?  Whatever it is, we’ll discover it together.

Happy Christmas Eve From All The Cats At The Shattered Lens

Pictures by Erin Nicole Model: Doc Bowman

To all of our readers — Happy Christmas Eve from all of the humans and the cats at the Shattered Lens!

2020 has not been an easy year for a lot of people and this Christmas is going to be bittersweet for many of our readers.  Our sincere hope is that 2021 will be better for everyone.  We look forward to continuing to review films both old and new as we continue to celebrate all forms of entertainment and culture!

To all of you, we wish you the best this holiday season!  We hope that these days find you happy and safe!

Merry almost Christmas and don’t forget to embrace your loved ones, your cats, and even your dogs!

And remember: Santa Claws Never Forgets The Cat!

Happy Festivus!

Friday is Christmas.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve.

But today is the most important holiday of all!

Happy Festivus!  It’s 2020 so you better believe I’ve got a lot of grievances to air!  But they’ll wait until after the aluminum pole goes up and after we’ve had our Festivus dinner.  Some people say that the Feats of Strength are more important than the Airing of Grievances but I say the grievances should always be at the center of any Festivus celebration.

If you need a refresher course on the origins of Festivus, listen to Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller, RIP):

Enjoy your Festivus dinner.  Let the people in your life know how the have let you done.  And who knows?  Maybe you’ll even experience a Festivus miracle because this is Festivus for the rest of us!

Happy Festivus!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 12/14/20 — 12/20/20

Christmas is almost here!

And you know what that means …. it’s time to rob the money plane!

No, no — actually, it means that it’s time to start preparing for a new year!  We’ve finally got a COVID vaccine, we’ve got an extended awards season, and …. well, 2021 will have to be an improvement, right?  My hope is that — after nonstop drama and spending the past 20 years or so being told what to do — 2021 will be the year that people say, “Screw it!” and start doing whatever the Hell they want.

It’s time to bring about the 1920s and the 1970s, my friends.  And the best way to do that is to …. rob the money plane!
