For the record, I hate the term “adulting” and yet, that’s probably the only term that I can use to describe last week.  I acted like an adult and I did a bunch of adult things and none of them make for a particularly a good story but they still had to be done.  For instance, I got the battery changed in my car.  I paid all of my bills.  I went over to my Dad’s house to make sure that the landscapers trimmed the trees so that he didn’t get fined by the city.

Actually, I guess that last bit might make a good story.  The city was actually going to fine my Dad because the branches on the trees in his front yard were reaching across something called “the gutter line.”  My Dad is having a few health issues right now so he really wasn’t feeling up to doing it himself.  So, I called the landscapers and I made sure that they took care of it.  That’s not a problem, of course.  The problem is that it had to be done in the first place.  The letter that the city sent my Dad was particularly snooty as well, as if a branch reaching across the gutter line was the greatest sin known to man.  My main regret is that the branches all went into a woodchipper because I would have liked to have dumped them in front of city hall!

(I also have to say that I couldn’t look at the woodchipper without thinking about that scene in Fargo, where Frances McDormand comes across Peter Stomare disposing of Steve Buscemi.  Agck!)

Happy 4th of July!

Well, this was a lethargic week and I am thoroughly embarrassed to admit that this is the first week this year in which I did not read a book.  The heat got to me.  It got to a lot of people apparently.  For once, it’s actually hotter up north than it is down here.  

I got a lot of accomplished when we were snowed in back in February.  Extreme cold apparently makes me much more productive than extreme heat.  So, I may not have gotten much done this week but at least I learned something!

This week …. bleh.  It was long and it was hot and the details about what Britney Spears’s life is like left me totally shaken.  The year is almost halfway over and I still don’t feel like I’ve really begun to get started on any of the things that I started this year planning to accomplish.  Of course, in between the ice storms, the nonstop rain, and now the heat wave, the weather has not always been cooperative.

Oh well!  Despite the negative tone of the paragraph above, I’m a positive person at heart and I know that this upcoming week will be an improvement.  Not only is the 4th of July approaching but it’s supposed to rain nonstop for the next six days!  So, instead of the high being 99, it might be 89!  Woo hoo!  Cold front!

Summer temperatures arrived this week!  We’ve gone from being in the 70s to being in the high 90s and, as a result, we’re cranking up the AC here at the Texas offices of the Shattered Lens and we’re hoping for some sort of eventual relief.

Still, there is good news.  The local Alamo Drafthouse will soon be reopening.  2021 will soon be halfway through.  In another few months, it’ll be my favorite time of year!  It’s all just a matter of surviving the summer heat.  Best of luck to us all!

As for next week, I will be divorcing myself from the news and only focusing on movies and writing.  It’s not going to be easy because I actually am kind of interested in who is going to win the NYC mayoral primaries.  Then again, it’s a New York election so it’s not like they’re going to finish counting the votes before August anyways.

Down here in Texas, it’s getting hot.  This week, it hit the 90s for the first time this year.  It’s hard to believe that, less than 4 months ago, we were covered in ice and snow and it was 4 degrees in the afternoon.

As I sit here writing this, I am exhausted.  This week didn’t go the way that I was hoping.  My plan was to watch one hundred movies and write two hundred reviews.  In retrospect, that may have been an unrealistic goal for 7 days but honestly, I think the unrealistic goals are the best ones to have.

Still, I didn’t do anywhere near as much as I was hoping and I wish I could offer up an explanation that’s more profound than my back was hurting and I was tired but …. well, that’s the way it goes.  I’ll make up for it this upcoming week!

My feelings about this week are mixed.

On the one hand, I got next to no writing done. That’s a very rare occurrence and, as Sunday comes to a close, I’m a bit annoyed with myself. I ended up spending most of the week going through all of my old journals and looking over my old notebooks, trying to make out a definitive list of every film that I’ve watched since 2007. (Letterboxd is addictive.) It’s an ongoing project.

On the other hand, I did watch a lot of movies. So far, I’ve watched 257 movies this year. I want that number to be 300 by the end of May. So, I’ve got 43 movies to go and, if I keep up the pace that I established this week, I should be able to easily accomplish that goal. So yay for that!

Ah, well. There’s nothing you can do but move forward. Next week, it’s supposed to rain nonstop and the rain always seems to be inspire my best work.
