6 More Exploitation Trailers: The Late Edition

Hi, Lisa Marie here.  I apologize for being a day late in continuing my series of posts devoted to some of my favorite exploitation and grindhouse film trailers.  Unfortunately, I got caught up having a fight with a troll over on my other blog and I ended up running behind.  The lesson here is that trolls are not worth the trouble.

But enough time wasted on dumbfugs and toadsuckers.  Let’s talk exploitation with six more of my favorite trailers.

1) The Candy Snatchers

Sadly, this DVD is now out-of-print and the people selling it on Amazon want you to pay something like $80.00 for it.  That’s a shame because The Candy Snatchers is, arguably, one of the greatest films ever made.  This is one of those movies that I desperately need to review but I’m still struggling to find the right words to express just how brilliant this movie is.

2) Django Kill

This trailer doesn’t really do justice to Django Kill which, quite frankly, is probably the strangest, most surreal western ever made.  Yes, this film is even stranger than El Topo.  However, I still like the pop art feel of this trailer.

3) The Raiders of Atlantis

This is one of Ruggero Deodato’s non-cannibal movies.  It’s actually surprisingly enjoyable in a very silly sort of way.

4) Burial Ground

Also known as The Nights of Terror, this is one of the more infamous examples of the Italian zombie genre.  To be honest, this is an amazingly trashy, stupid movie but once you start watching, you can not turn away.  This is another film I’ve been meaning to review for a while as I think it’s actually the most political of all the Italian zombie films.  People tend to get some caught up with the whole incest subplot that they miss the whole Marxist subtext.  And yes, the movie does include a title card that contains the word “profecy.”

5) The Teacher

I love this trailer.  It is such a relic that I almost feel like it should be put in a time capsule.  Plus, that whole “She corrupted the morals…” tag line is just so priceless.

6) Boss

When this 1975 movie was released on DVD, it was titled Boss.  Well, that’s only half of the original title.  I’ve never seen this movie (as the only westerns that interest me are Italian-made) but this trailer has always stuck with me because of the whole “Did I just hear that?” factor.  However, after I first saw this trailer, I did some research and discovered that the movie was actually written and produced by the film’s star, Fred Williamson.  So, that makes me a bit more comfortable with it.

I recently came to the realization that my destiny is to list and share 666 of my favorite grindhouse and exploitation film trailers.  Previously, I’ve shared 12.  Here’s 6 more.

1) Liquid Sky — Have you seen Liquid Sky and if the answer is no, why not?  Liquid Sky is one of the great underground films of the early 80s, an epic about drugs, aliens, bisexuality, and performance art.  Quite simply put, you must see this movie.

2) Blacula — When I first saw this trailer, my first thought was, “Oh, that is sooooo wrong.”  But, the movie actually isn’t that bad.  William Marshall is wonderfully dignified and haunted as the tragic title character.

3) Bio-Zombie — I haven’t actually seen this movie but I love this energetic trailer (and the Hello Kitty reference, as well).

4) Martin — This trailer for George Romero’s vampire movie features the film’s star, John Amplas, speaking to the audience in character.  Martin is one of the unacknowledged great vampire movies.  Supposedly, there’s a remake in the works which, needless to say, is not necessary in the least.  The original is more than good enough.

5) Near Dark — Speaking of vampire movies, here’s Near Dark.  Before Kathryn Bigelow won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, she made her debut with Near Dark.  Of the two, Near Dark is the better film.

6) Rabid — This is an early David Cronenberg film and probably one of his first stabs at being a “commercial” filmmaker (I would have to ask R-Lee for sure on this as he’s the resident Cronenberg expert).  The late Marilyn Chambers plays a young woman who gets infected with rabies and proceeds to spread the disease throughout Montreal.  As you might expect with a Cronenberg film, the Canadian government quickly turns fascist and a lot of Canadians die as a result.  The movie’s not totally succesful but the trailer is.  As a sidenote: in 2004, Marilyn Chambers Taylor was the vice-presidential candidate of the Personal Choice Party.  I cast my first vote ever for her.

Sucker Punch Trailer (HD)

While I wasn’t able to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2010 I did try to follow it on-line as much as possible. From what I read through Twitter updates, film blog sites and everything in-between it looks like one of the highlights of the Con was Zack Snyder’s follow-up to Watchmen. His “Alive in Wonderland with machine guns” has been gaining major league hype and buzz since more details were released and shown during it’s panel.

An earlier posting I made showed the beautiful painted character posters for the cast of Sucker Punch. This follow-up post will now show the first trailer for this film which is set for a March 25, 2011 release. From what I could see in the trailer it looks like Snyder hasn’t lost his ability to put on film some gorgeous looking set-pieces. This is a man who definitely has a flair and talent for visuals. The question now (which the trailer didn’t answer in any way) is whether Sucker Punch can match it’s amazing visuals with a worthwhile story.

This film is Snyder’s first project not based on an adapted source. Maybe we’ll see his storytelling skills blossom with Sucker Punch.

Paranormal Activity 2: Too Scary For Texas

According to Variety, Cinemark has pulled the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 from several theaters in my homestate of Texas because, apparently, filmgoers (the majority of whom were apparently in the theater to see Twilight: Eclipse) complained that it was too frightening.

Uhmmm….right.

I’ve seen the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 online and, to be honest, the scariest thing about it is that it confirms that a sequel was actually made to Paranormal Activity One. 

(As a sidenote, the PA 2 trailer recycles the old footage of viewers supposedly jumping in fright while watching the first film.  I always wondered just who exactly these idiots were and whether or not they’d ever actually seen a movie before.)

This whole thing seems to be an old-fashioned publicity stunt designed to create word-of-mouth among the type of people who probably think that the obnoxious filmmakers in Cannibal Holocaust actually were eaten by cannibals at the end of the movie.

It’s especially interesting that these complaints supposedly came from Texas.  I suppose that’s going to be the new advertising angle — Paranormal Activity 2: The Movie So Scary That Even Texans Are Afraid To Watch.  I imagine that now filmgoers are supposed to say, “Wow, it’s got to be scary!  I mean, we expect that sort of cowardly behavior from those new age hippies in Vermont but these are cowboys here!”

(By the way, I’m from Texas and I’ve never worn a cowboy hat and I don’t own a horse.  I do say “y’all” on occasion.  Seriously though, FUCK VERMONT.  Sorry, I’ve always wanted to say that.)

I have to be honest, as much as I disliked the first Paranormal Activity, this publicity stunt has won the filmmakers a very small place in my heart.  This is the type of shameless, silly stunt that would make the grindhouse proud.  Hopefully, they’ll have a nurse present at all screenings of Paranormal Activity 3.

The A-Team: Official Full Trailer

Finally, we get the first full trailer for his summer’s upcoming film adaptation of the popular 80’s action tv series, The A-Team.

The first trailer was a teaser version which didn’t seem to elicit much excitement from people when it was first shown. It was short on any sort of details and didn’t really introduce the characters to people who may not have seen the series. That teaser trailer was also lacking in any action sequences to tease the public into wanting to see more. Well, that is until the very final sequence with the palleted tank free-falling from tens of thousands of feet and Bradley Cooper’s character “Face” popping out of the commander’s hatch, prime the Ma Deuce and firing it while doing said tank free-fall.

It’s been a couple months since that teaser’s release and there hasn’t been much from the film’s studio to help increase buzz on the film. But it looks like this official full trailer might have fixed the problem the teaser caused. This full trailer actually makes The A-Team look like it could be a fun, action flick. There’s some of the humor from the series and the full trailer gives a quick intro of the team’s four members (I liked Murdock’s best). There’s even a subtle reference in the trailer about how give the team an hour and they’re practically invincible. This is in reference to the tv show where the team literally MacGyver’s their way through no-win situations save the day. I hope that becomes part of whatever last reel climactic action sequence the film may have.

The A-Team is set for a June 11, 2010 release. It’s directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces) and starring Liam Neeson (Hannibal), Bradley Cooper (Face), Quinton Jackson (BA Baracus) and Sharlto Copley (howlin’ Mad Murdock). I know I’ll be there on Day One of it’s release to watch and knowing some of my older uncles and my dad, they’ll be there as well.

Neil Marshall’s Centurion Official Trailer

I have been a huge fan of Neil Marshall. The British filmmaker burst into the genre scene with his cult-classic werewolf-siege flick, Dog Soldiers. He then follows that up with the excellent all-female cast monster mash, The Descent. His third outing was a bit mixed for some, but I definitely had a great time with Doomsday. Marshall really knows the genre he works in and also enjoys staying in it.

His fourth film is a historical thriller set during the Roman occupation of Britain during the 2nd Century A.D. The film was originally called The Ninth Legion during the production, but has since been officially changed to Centurion. The basic premise of the film is Marshall’s telling of the legend of the 9th Legion and their disappearance north of Hadrian’s Wall. He’s made it known that the film will not be historically accurate and wasn’t meant to be. The film will be his way to re-tell the legend of the legion’s disappearance, it’s cause and wrap an action-thriller around it.

Starring in the film are Dominic West, Michael Fassbender (last seen as the British operative Hickox in Inglourious Basterds) and Olga Kurylenko. The film is tentatively dated to be released in the U.K. on April 23, 2010. No set date has been announced for a NA release, but I’m sure it will get one. It better.

A.D. – CG Animated Zombie trailer

I must begin this entry by thanking Phil Edwards over at Live for Films for introducing me to this particular piece of awesome. Check out his very extensive blog on practically anything about films. It was there that I first saw this trailer for a zombie film that’s stuck between concept and development. The trailer is for A.D. and while it hasn’t been made into a feature-lenght film this trailer should convince studio heads everywhere to seriously make this into one. If 9 can go from a short cgi-animated film into a full blown feature-leght one then I definitely think A.D. should get the same chance. I mean it’s CGI zombie apocalypse and does it ever look great.

The only thing I hope doesn’t happen is for a place like Lionsgate to end up as the studio to get this film up and running. They may like horror and genre films, but they’ve been very sloppy in handling those same types of film (ex: Midnight Meat Train and Punisher: War Zone). I think A.D. is definitely the type of project Peter Jackson’s production company could get behind on.

So, all horror and genre fans need to spread the word concerning A.D. This is a film that needs to get made and he sooner the better.

Inception 2nd Teaser Trailer

I still have no clear idea what Christopher Nolan’s follow-up film to The Dark Knight is all about. Inception seems to be about the power of the mind to alter things. From this latest trailer there a sense of Proyas’ Dark City in the some of the visuals and more than just a passing influence from the Wachowski Brothers’ Matrix Trilogy. But this being Nolan whatever influences we may see will probably be supplanted by his own take on the nature of reality, memory and dreams.

If rumors are true about the supposed budget for this film (some saying it’s 200million or more) then Nolan is really inching towards Cameron territory when it comes to acquiring the sort of budget to make his ideas come to life. I’m interested in knowing if Nolan will be shooting some of this film on IMAX like how he did some of the more expansive sequences in The Dark Knight. From the look of some of the scenes in this trailer I wouldn’t be shocked if he did.

[REC]2 Teaser Trailer

I wasn’t that too big a fan of the first film ([REC]) and definitely not a huge fan of the American remake which got renamed, Quarantine. The “in-the-moment” video footage made popular by films such as The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield really stretched the need to suspend one’s disbelief while watching the original Spanish-language film and it’s American remake. But then again I seem to be in the minority when it comes to not liking those two films.

With the popularity of both films having made its studios profits it didn’t come as a surprise to see a sequel greenlit by the original Spanish studio with the original filmmakers, Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, returning. The sequel is to take place immediately after the events of the first film. From the trailer that has been released of the film the same camera-style as the first film remains, but (if I’m to go by how the trailer was put together) this sequel may actually capture my interest. There’s a sense of this sequel looking like a live-action survival-horror FPS game. I’m sure the sequel won’t just be trying to be like a video game, but the trailer sure makes the sequel seem more interesting and just a bit more energetic.
