Lisa’s Week In Review: 5/4/20 — 5/10/20

Well, here we are at the end of another week.  Some parts of the country are still locked down and some are not.  It’s a little bit hard to keep track of what’s open and what isn’t.  Right now, everyone just seems to be making it up as they go along.

With a lack of new movies to watch and review, I spent most of this week binging The Sopranos.  I’m currently on Season 5 and, as of right now, I’m totally caught up in the misadventures of the New Jersey mob.  Once I’m done with The Sopranos, I’ll probably check in with the gangsters of Boardwalk Empire and the cowboys of Deadwood.  I’m trying to binge as many of these shows as I can before they leave Prime for HBO MAX.

In other news, I finally saw the episode of The Love Boat that features Andy Warhol as a passenger on the cruise!  Seriously, I first read about this episode like 13 years ago and, ever since, I’ve been checking the TV listings to see if it would ever show up on any of the retro stations!  Today, it was broadcast on MeTV!  I saw it and yes, I DVRed it.

Anyway, stay safe out there.  Can you believe that, in just another month and a half, we will be halfway through 2020.  With the lockdown and all the rest, it almost feels like this year really hasn’t even begun yet.

Happy Cinco de Mayo from The Shattered Lens!

¡Feliz cinco de mayo!

When it comes to the U.S.A., is Cinco de Mayo a big deal outside of the Southwest?  I honestly don’t know and, to be honest, I can’t say for sure that I really want to know.  All that really matters, to me, is that it’s a pretty big day where I come from.  It’s always been one of my favorite holidays and the idea of celebrating this day in lock-down, shelter-in-place quarantine really, really sucks.  Cinco de Mayo is a time when people should be gathered together and not forcibly separated.  It’s also one of the few times that I ever drink.  That’s how much I love Cinco de Mayo!

(My fondest Cinco de Mayo memory comes from a 2006 party that I attended in Denton, Texas.  Everyone gathered on the roof of a house and celebrated.  There are a lot of stories from that night.)

Oh well.  This year’s Cinco de Mayo celebration will be different from previous years but still, I look forward to celebrating the day.  I may just end up celebrating it by just watching a lot of movies and writing a lot of reviews but that’s just the way of the world right now.  As I wrote to a friend of mine yesterday, quarantine sucks but at least I’m getting to watch a lot of movies.  Plus, my friend and TSL collaborator, Case Wright, was wonderful enough to send me an audible of Lonesome Dove being read by western actor Lee Horsley.  I just got started listening to it but I’m enjoying it so far!

As well, Dillon Francis is doing an online benefit concert so I’ll definitely check that out.  Erin makes the best margaritas.  And, of course, I can always watch the Cinco de Mayo episode of King of the Hill.  That one is a Texas classic.

No, today will not be a typical holiday but that won’t keep us from celebrating!

Anyway, my apologies for this rambling post.  This is not exactly a typical TSL article, is it?  But sometimes it’s good to just be able to vent a little.  We’re staying safe here at TSL and we hope you are too.  Happy Cinco de Mayo to all of you.

Lisa Marie

P.S. Today is not Mexican Independence Day, despite what many people seem to believe.  Instead, today commemorates the Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla.

Lisa’s Week In Review: 3/30/20 — 4/05/20

The lockdown continues.

One good thing: Black Widow has been moved back to November 6th.  That’s three days before my birthday so, assuming that I can actually go outside in November and that the Alamo Drafthouse manages to reopen, Black Widow can be my free birthday movie!  (Never give up hope.)

It’s interesting to think about actually.  All of the summer blockbusters are getting pushed back into what is traditionally Oscar season.  So, it’s easy (or maybe just entertaining) to imagine a situation where the Oscar race comes down to Black Widow vs Wonder Woman 1984 vs Top Gun: Maverick.

We’ll see what happens!  Here’s my report for this week:

A Special April Fools Day Message From Lisa Marie Bowman, Co-Founder Of Through The Shattered Lens

Hi, everyone!

So, obviously, today is April Fools Day!  Right now, there’s a lot of angst and worry out there, over the Coronavirus pandemic, the economic collapse, and the 2020 presidential election.  There’s a lot of uncertainty and a lot of fear.  April Fools Day is a day that traditionally does not mix well with real anxiety and real fear.  Online, I’ve seen a lot of discussion about whether or not April Fools Day should be canceled this year.

My initial instinct was to say, “Yes, it should be canceled.”  In fact, I was planning on having Doc write a lengthy (but hopefully cute!) post about why you shouldn’t play any pranks on anyone today.  But the more I think about it, the less comfortable I am with the self-righteousness of the “Cancel April Fools Days” folks.  I don’t like the idea of telling anyone what they can or cannot do.  It’s not my place to do that nor is it my place to pass judgment on what you decide to do or not do this day.  My personal opinion is that you shouldn’t prank anyone today but just because you shouldn’t do something doesn’t mean that you can’t.  It’s really a decision that you have to make for yourself.

So, you know what?  Do whatever the Hell you want.

As for us, we’re heading into April.  With both the 18 Days of Paranoia and Spring Breakdown now at a close, I’m about to start a new month-long series of reviews.  I’ll be spending the next 30 days reviewing films that were produced outside of the United States.  Cinema, after all, is an international art form and great movies don’t just come out of California.  They come from all over the world.  And, of course, we’ll have all of your usual features as well.  They say that we’re heading into a tough month, as far as battling the Coronavirus is concerned.  Hopefully, we here at the TSL can provide our readers with at least a temporary escape from what currently feels like a nonstop deluge of ominous news.

Thanks for reading, stay supple, stay safe, and stay healthy!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 3/23/20 — 3/29/20

Last week, I sheltered in place.

This week, I sheltered in place.

Next week, I imagine that I will shelter in place.

This is getting annoying but at least I’m getting a lot written.

Having seasonal allergies in the middle of a Coronavirus pandemic is a whole new level of stress.  I woke up every morning congested and with a slightly sore throat and then I wait an hour to see if they go away.  Oh well.  Someday, I’ll go to a movie again.

Until then….

I’m stuck at home due to the Coronavirus but I’m healthy, I’m locked in with two of my favorite people and my favorite cat, and I’ve got movies to watch, books to read, and music to listen to.  So, I’m not going to complain.

Fortunately, I’ve also got this super goofy picture of Joe Biden to keep me amused:
