Today, everyone else is talking about the fact that Henry Cavill will not be playing Superman in any future DC films but all I care about is the fact that the trailer for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has been released!
This is the latest film from the Coen Brothers. It’s a western. Originally, it was going to be a miniseries but apparently, the Coens decided that it worked better as a movie so they edited the anthology together. It’s six stories about death in the old west and it will soon be available on Netflix!
Somewhere on this site, I once posted my opinion that Uwe Boll was the worst director of all time.
That, of course, was many years ago and I posted that before watching Ulli Lommel’s Zodiac movie. At the time that I posted that, Boll was mostly known for directing movies that were based on a video games. A little bit later, Boll would get political and direct films like Assault of Wall Street and that led to some critics saying that perhaps Boll wasn’t as bad as they thought he was.
Myself, I stand by my original claim. Uwe Boll was the worst director of all time. I say was because he’s apparently retired from filmmaking. Before he retired — and this is actually really neat — he challenged some of his fiercest internet detractors to a boxing match. Many of them accepted, not realizing that Boll was an accomplished boxer before he became a director. Say what you will about Boll’s films but I imagine that, by literally beating the crap out of some of his critics, he got to live every director’s dream.
Anyway, there’s a documentary coming out about Uwe Boll. It’s called Fuck You All: The Uwe Boll Story. I may or I may not see it. Here’s the trailer!
It’s the date for the latest entry to the Halloween franchise. It’s to be a sequel to the original film. It will also discard every other Halloween sequel ever made. So, for those who are so anti-remake/reboot this should alleviate any of those triggers.
David Gordon Green (who co-wrote this sequel with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley) directs this sequel as a continuation of the events which happened with the original film. A follow-up that’s 40 years in the making, literally.
So, once again, remember October 19th and make sure to check this film out. I have a sneaking suspicion that it’ll be the true sequel to Carpenter’s classic.
Six years after making his directorial debut with The Cabin In The Wood, Drew Goddard returns to the director’s chair with Bad Times at the El Royale. Featuring Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Hemsworth, Bad Times at the El Royale will be released on October 12th.
From Universal Pictures, here is the second trailer to First Man. Damien Chazelle’s upcoming film stars Ryan Gosling as the first man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong, and Claire Foy as his first wife. First Man will be released on October 12th, putting it in head-to-head competition with Bad Times At the El Royale.
If you have ever wondered what you would get if you combined Bruce Willis, Adrien Brody, and unconvincing CGI, Air Strike is here to answer your question. Air Strike will be released on October 26th. Mel Gibson (yes, that Mel Gibson) was the production designer.
Finally, if you missed the first two Unfriended movies, E-Demon is here to shock you. E-Demon will be released on September 14th.
As a director, Jason Reitman has had a tough few years. After directing two best picture nominees — Junoand Up in the Air — and one film that should have been nominated (Young Adult), Reitman stumbled a bit with both Labor Day and Men, Women, & Children.
However, this year, it appears that he may be making a bit of a comeback. Earlier this year, he reunited with Charlize Theron for Tully and directed her to some of the best reviews that she’s gotten in a while. (The critical reaction to his directing was a bit more mixed.) Now, with The Front Runner, Reitman is returning to screen just in time for the Oscar season.
The Front Runner is a film about a presidential candidate (Hugh Jackman) who gets wrapped up in a scandal. Jackman has been getting some Oscar buzz. To be honest, most films about political campaigns tend to fall flat, largely because filmmakers always seem to get too caught up in their own biases to actually craft a compelling film. (Remember The Ides of March?) Hopefully, this film won’t get bogged down in ideology because I’d like Reitman’s comeback to continue.
And a few of you are going crazy over the remake of Suspiria.
But, for me, the movie that I’m most looking forward to seeing is Orson Welles’s The Other Side of the Wind!
That’s right. After a 40-year production period that saw the death of almost everyone involved with the film (including director Orson Welles and star John Huston), The Other Side of the Wind is finally going to be released! It’ll be premiering on Netflix on November 2nd and it better get a helluva an Oscar campaign.
Director Jeremy Saulnier’s latest film, Hold The Dark, will come to Netflix on September 28th and it looks like it will be another tough and uncompromising film from the director of Blue Ruin and Green Room.
In Ben Is Back, Lucas Hedges plays Ben, who returns home on Christmas Eve and brings trouble with him. Julia Roberts plays his mother. This film is set for a December 7th release.
Every great Shakespearean actor eventually gets to play King Lear. Anthony Hopkins did so in this BBC production. This version transports Shakespeare’s tragedy to an alternative version of modern-day London and it will premiere on Amazon Prime on September 28th.

I’m quite sure that a huge number of people have seen Mel Gibson’s second film as director which won him two Oscars: for Best Director and Best Film. While his career has seen it’s major up’s and down’s, he still has done some great work behind the camera as a director.
Now, what does this all mean to this new Netflix Original film coming out this year called Outlaw King? The answer is not much other than both film share a particular historical character in the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. In Gibson’s film he’s a supporting character whose motivations could be seen as very pragmatic and bordering on the villainous.
Outlaw King, by Scottish director David MacKenzie (who directed the great Hell or High Water), will tell the story of the legendary Scottish king Robert the Bruce who won Scotland’s independence from England where William Wallace ultimately failed to do.
I am going on a hunch that Outlaw King will treat Robert the Bruce in a more sympathetic light than how Gibson’s film portrayed him. This time around we have Chris Pine in the role of Robert the Bruce.
As seen in the trailer, it looks like Netflix’s several billion dollar spending spree has come not just luring prominent filmmakers and producers to the streaming site but also allow them the resources to make a film as lush and beautiful as any made under the remaining big studios.
Let’s hope Outlaw King is more on the level of Mudbound and less like Bright.
In my absense, it looks like other people have flourished, but now I think it’s time to make a return and this time for good.
What better way to mark my return than to show and talk about the first official full-length trailer for what could be one of the more divisive horror remakes set to arrive in a couple months.
I am talking about Suspiria by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, A Bigger Splash and I Am Love). The original film by Italian giallo maestro Dario Argento many horror fans consider a great example of the Italian giallo of the late 70’s and early 80’s. Just like most fandoms, whenever there’s talk about one of the classics being remade there’s levels of trepidation, anger and guarded optimism.
While I’m never one to look at remakes as ruining the originals. IF that was the case then we wouldn’t have excellent horror remakes such as Carpenter’s The Thing and, to an extent, Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead.
While I’m excited to see what Guadagnino brings to the table when it comes to his remake of Suspiria, I am also somewhat guarded in that the original film was such a surreal experience that remaking it note for note wouldn’t add anything new to the experience.
Here’s to hoping this is one horror remake that falls under the great side of the equation instead of the trash end.
Yesterday was James Baldwin’s birthday so it was also the perfect day to release the trailer for Barry Jenkins’s upcoming film, If Beale Street Could Talk. If Beale Street Could Talk is based on a 1974 novel by Baldwin.
Jenkins, of course, previously directed Moonlight, which won the Oscar for best picture. Interestingly enough, Moonlight defeated Damien Chazelle’s La La Land for the prize. This year, not only is Jenkins back but so is Chazelle with First Man.
So, could we be looking at another Jenkins vs Chazelle Oscar race? Maybe. Who knows, to be honest? That is what a lot of people are hoping for, of course. Jenkins vs. Chazelle: The Rematch!
