AMV of the Day: You Can Be King Again (Hotarubi no Mori e)

hotarubi no mori e

In my absence, Lisa Marie did quite a great job picking up the slack when it came time to put up a new anime music video. She had quite the eclectic choice of videos that ran the gamut from comedy, space opera, ecchi to drama.

As I continue my return back I thought it was high time to put up a new AMV and this time from an anime I haven’t even seen. It’s actually an anime that even the site expert pantsukudasai56 hasn’t seen but had heard of. The anime in question is the supernatural romance anime film Hotarubi no Mori e.

Just from researching what the anime was about I knew this was going to be one of those shoujo fares that I would need to find time to watch. It helps that the video’s creator, youlazybum, did such a great job pairing scenes from the anime with one of my favorite songs these past ten years, Lauren Aquilina’s “King.”

So, here’s my latest AMV of the Day, “You Can Be King Again.”

Anime you should be watching: Hinamatsuri

I know, I know, I say I’m gonna start posting a lot, but seeing as it’s been a year and a half since I’ve posted, I won’t blow smoke up your keester.  I don’t post often, and I may not post for awhile again.  But the spring anime season has brought us such a gem of an anime that I absolutely cannot let anyone not know about it.  This rare masterpiece that I’m referring to is Hinamatsuri.

The basic premise of Hinamatsuri is this.  An alien girl, or possibly psychic girl from the future, who really knows?  Anyways, she shows up in a pod in the apartment of a fairly high ranking Yakuza member (the Japanese version of the Mafia).  She essentially blackmails him into letting her stay with him because he loves his expensive vases, and she can smash them with just a thought.  But that’s just scratching the surface.

When I first started watching this show, I did love it, but I felt that its namesake, Hina, was the worst person in the whole show.  I mean, you have Hitomi (see picture above) who is the pushover type.  She can’t say no or make a compelling argument in her defense, so she essentially gets used by everyone.  But, she’s so good at what she does that even though she’s being used, she winds up being the most successful 9th grader in the world.  Soon she’s the 9th grader that CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are desperate to hire.  All the while, she wants nothing more than to be a normal middle school girl.

Then you have Anzu.  Oh for the love of kittens, there’s Anzu.  She initially shows up as a rival for Hina, but Hina shows that she’s much more powerful than Anzu and immediately puts her in her place.  Anzu plans to go back to wherever they’re from, but her transportation pod is irreparably damaged.  Initially she realizes that shes much stronger than mere humans, but she is such a good girl that she doesn’t try to take advantage of it.  She winds up homeless, and then many tugs to the heartstrings are made.  Eventually everyone is left with the only conclusion, ANZU IS A GOOD GIRL.

Ultimately, it’s very hard to talk about this show and not spoil much.  Is this a comedy?  Yes.  Is this a slice of life?  Yes.  Is this a drama?  Yes.  Essentially, this is a show that’s greater than the sum of its parts.  Even the one shot throw away episode with Mao was entertaining and tugged at the heartstrings.  Very rarely will I honestly say that an anime is perfect, but Hinamatsuri is that rare show where everything works and brings you the most entertainment you will ever find in this medium.

AMV Of The Day: Serve and Protect (Space Battleship Yamato 2199)

It’s been a while since we did an AMV of the Day post here at the Shattered Lens.  With today being World UFO Day, this seems like a good time to rectify that situation.  And what better way to do it than with an AMV that features a lot of spaceships blowing up?

I have to admit that I kinda missed the whole news cycle where the President proposed a Space Force and it would appear that most people have now moved on from it.  (That’s what happens when each news cycle only lasts for 5 hours.)  Personally, I think it would be kinda neat to have a Space Force, just in case the Space Bugs turn out to be real or whatever.  Plus, it would probably be fun to conquer other planets.  As the old saying goes, “Earth first!  Makes Mars our bitch!”  Though if an American Space Force conquered Mars, wouldn’t that makes Mars the 51st state or something?  Or the 54th, assuming that California splits up before we get around to invading the red planet?  I don’t know.  I’m not really into politics so I can’t say for sure.

Anyway, if we do get a Space Force, I imagine it’ll look something like this video.

AMV of the Day: Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing (Ace Attorney)

Today is not just Communist New Year.  It’s also Law Day!

Now, I know that Law Day sounds like a made up holiday but, believe it or not, it is very much real.  Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day on May 1st, 1958 and it has been observed every year since.  In fact, Congress even made it one of those official holidays that no one has ever heard of.

According to Wikipedia:

36 U.S.C. § 113 states, in part:

Law Day, U.S.A., is a special day of celebration by the people of the United States—
(1) in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States and of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other and with other countries; and
(2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.

So, in honor of Law Day, here’s an Ace Attorney AMV!

AMV of the Day: Leave Me Alone (Ace Attorney)

It’s been a few weeks since we last shared an AMV here on the Shattered Lens.  Our resident anime experts, Arleigh and Pantsukudasai56 are currently at Fanime Con in San Jose and I’m sure they’ll be returning with all sorts of interesting stuff.

Until they return, I’m going to go ahead and share another Ace Attorney AMV.

On top of everything else, today is Law Day!

(2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.

(And since anyone can put anything they want on Wikipedia, you know it’s true!  That said, I have actually been to a few Law Day luncheons and they are just as much fun as you would think they are.)

So, with all that in mind, enjoy the special Law Day AMV of the Day!

AMV Of The Day: Brand New Day (Ace Attorney)

Hi, everyone!

My sister and I just returned from spending a wonderful weekend up at Lake Texoma.  I had a great time.  Honestly, you never know how stressed you are until you take a little vacation from it all and suddenly discover that you can actually breathe again.

Anyway, I wanted our latest AMV of the Day to somehow be connected to a wonderful weekend at a beautiful lake but I couldn’t find one.  However, I did find the next best thing!

This AMV combines footage from Ace Attorney with Neil Patrick Harris singing Brand New Day from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.  It all comes together surprisingly well.
