Cleaning Out The DVR Yet Again #41: Lady Snowblood (dir by Toshiya Fujita)


(Lisa recently discovered that she only had about 8 hours of space left on her DVR!  It turns out that she’s been recording movies from July and she just hasn’t gotten around to watching and reviewing them yet.  So, once again, Lisa is cleaning out her DVR!  She is going to try to watch and review 52 movies by the end of 2017!  Will she make it?  Keep checking the site to find out!)

On Oct. 23rd, I recorded the classic martial arts/revenge film, Lady Snowblood!

There’s a scene, in Lady Snowblood, in which a drunk gambler sobs as he begs the white-clad Yuki Kashima (Meiko Kaji) to spare his life.  He says that he’s sorry that he raped her mother.  He’s sorry that he took part in the murders of both Yuki’s half-brother and her mother’s husband.  He points out that years have passed and he has changed.  He now has a daughter of his own.  It wasn’t even his idea to attack Yuki’s mother.  He was forced to take part.

And while the gambler begs, Yuki stares down at him without a hint of emotion.  Though the audience may feel conflicted because the gambler sounds sincere in his remorse and it’s obvious that his life, in the years after his crimes, has been difficult, Yuki shows no compassion.  There are no tears from her.  Instead, she tells him, “An eye for an eye,” before slashing him to death.

There’s another scene in which Yuki discovers that another one of her targets has attempted to escape her vengeance by committing suicide.  As Yuki stares at the hanging body, she realizes that her target’s heart is still beating.  With one quick slice of her sword, Yuki chops the body in half.  The blood pouring onto the floor sounds like rain drops tapping on a tin roof.

And finally, when Yuki discovers that another target has died before she got a chance to track him down, she goes to a cemetery and destroy his tombstone.

In short, Yuki is a killing machine, one who dispenses vengeance with style and flair.  She was literally born, bred, and trained solely for the purpose of dispensing violent justice.  After her mother was raped and watched as her husband and son were brutally murdered, she was sent to prison.  It was there that she had an affair with a prison guard, specifically out of the hope that she would conceive and give birth to a child of vengeance.

First released in 1973, Lady Snowblood is perhaps best known for being a major influence on the Kill Bill films but it’s also one of the best revenge films ever made.  Stylishly directed and relentlessly paced, Lady Snowblood is almost a ballet of violence, with the grace of Yuki’s movements emphasized almost as much as their bloody results.  Though Yuki’s grim determination is often frightening, it’s also impossible not to admire her.  Her only job is to dispense vengeance and she’s the best at what she does.  And since she’s a woman who, for the most part, is killing evil men in an oppressively patriarchal society, her actions soon become about more than mere revenge.  With each slice of her sword and drop of blood spilled, Yuki is taking vengeance for not just her mother but for every other woman as well.

If anyone ever hurt me or anyone I loved, I would want Yuki on my side.

If I could be any revenge-seeking movie character, I would want to be Yuki.

I would want to be Lady Snowblood.

The SAG Nominations are here and … Hello there, Captain Fantastic!


captain-fantasticEarlier the year, I choose not to see Captain Fantastic.  Every bit of advertising that I saw for it led me to believe that Captain Fantastic was basically just Wes Anderson-lite and, as we all know, only Wes Anderson can successfully duplicate Wes Anderson.

Well, I think I may have made a mistake because Viggo Mortensen is definitely in the hunt for best actor.  Though most of the precursor awards (so far) have gone to Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea, Mortensen still seems like a likely nominee.

Just consider this: he got a SAG nomination!  And so did Captain Fantastic, itself!  It was nominated for best ensemble, which is the SAG equivalent of best picture…

Actually, maybe you shouldn’t spend too much time fixating on that.  People like me always talk about how the SAG awards are an obvious precursor for the Oscars.  Our logic is that the Actor’s Branch is the largest voting bloc in the Academy and the members of the Actor’s Branch are among those who also vote for the SAG awards.

Of course, we always forget that the majority of SAG members are themselves not a part of the Academy.  So, while enough members of SAG may have liked Captain Fantastic for it to get an unexpected ensemble nomination, that doesn’t necessarily mean that those voters are also members of the Academy.

I mean, let’s consider what happened last year.  Beasts of No Nation picked up an ensemble nomination.   So did Straight Outta Compton.  So did Trumbo.  None of those films proved to be an Oscar powerhouse.  In fact, Beasts of No Nation received a grand total of zero Oscar nominations.

So, let’s put it like this — it’s a good sign for a film or a performer to get a SAG nomination.  But there’s still no guarantee that it will translate into Oscar recognition. Captain Fantastic may have been nominated and La La Land was snubbed (for ensemble).  But I imagine that the reverse will happen when the Oscar noms are announced in January.

Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” – Full Trailer


The full trailer for Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Dunkirk, was recently released.

Focusing on the events surrounding the battle of Dunkirk, the movie looks to be pretty epic from at least a cinematography standpoint. Hoyt Van Hoytema (Spectre, Interstellar, Her) is back for this, which could be fantastic for the 70mm and IMAX Presentations.

Dunkirk – Starring Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branaugh, is due to open in theatres next July.

Music Video of the Day: Let Forever Be by The Chemical Brothers (1999, dir. Michel Gondry)


I recently decided to pin a tweet to my account saying I’ll take requests for music videos to do here. Lisa jumped on it in short order. Of her requests, I decided to go with this one first.

I was originally planning to go back and try to put this music video in some context, but I have a bad habit of biting off more than I can chew. If I were really to do that, then I would probably be going back at least as far as 1978, if not back to the 1960s. Forget that, I’ll get to those music videos in time. You don’t have to know anything about where elements of this music video come from to enjoy it.

The Chemical Brothers were probably my first introduction to this style of music. It never really stuck with me. I remember there being some show on MTV that generated screensaver-like patterns to songs such as Block Rockin’ Beats. That was enjoyable to catch late at night. But like I said, this genre of music never really became a thing for me.

I like the song, but it’s the music video that interests me. I won’t lie. I took one look at the thumbnail for the music video, and thought of Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush. Then I hit Michel Gondry’s IMVDb page and a few music videos caught my eye. He has done some for Björk because of course he has. Two other music videos that jumped out at me were Blow Me Down by Mark Curry and Les Jupes by RoBERT.

There’s a constant theme of distortion of reality in Gondry’s work. For example, you can see this in 1995’s Like A Rolling Stone by The Rolling Stones. You can see the spinning of reality to reveal fantasy in his version of Sheryl Crow’s A Change Would Do You Good where it’s a viewfinder rather than something you would expect in a musical. You can see the clock in Feel It by Neneh Cherry. Another interesting one to look at is Hou! Mama Mia by Les Negresses Vertes.

You can go on and on here piecing this music video together from Gondry’s previous work, but I won’t. To really do it justice would require doing a full retrospective of Gondry’s music videos.

You can go through and interpret the video. I’ll leave that to you. Gondry doesn’t make it cryptic. My favorite part is the television test pattern. I like how the clock is normal at the start when she wakes, blank when she goes to sleep, and giant when she buries herself under her covers at the end. The hour hand does a horizontal flip between the way it is shown at the start as opposed to the end. Also, the blank clock has the drum set on top of it that progressively moves from the sidewalk across the street to being in her apartment.

Just enjoy it! I did. Thank you for the recommendation, Lisa. Someday I’ll get around to going through all of Gondry’s work that I can get my hands on.

Georges Bermann and Julie Fong produced the music video. They both worked mainly with Gondry.

K.K. Barrett was the art director. I can only find a couple of credits, but three of them happen to be ones that have already been done here. He was the “Philosophical Consultant” on Weapon Of Choice by Fatboy Slim. I still have no idea what that means. He was the production designer on Elektrobank by The Chemical Brothers. He was also the art director for Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins. That means they hired an art director who is famous for working on a remake of a classic example of Cinema of Spectacle (A Trip To The Moon), would go on to do a Fred Astaire inspired music video, and had already done a music video with The Chemical Brothers. Even more so, he was doing music like this known as electropunk back in the 1970s with a group called The Screamers. You can see him on drums in the video below–assuming it is still up.

He has also worked on famous films like Her (2013) and Lost In Translation (2003).
