The Directors Guild Honors Nomadland

The Directors Guild has announced their winners for 2020 and there’s really no surprises to be found below.  Chloe Zhao won for Nomadland.  Darius Marder won for Sound of Metal.  Documentary went to the directors of The Truffle Hunters.  I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot from them in the future.

Here Are The SAG Winners!

The Screen Actors Guild honored their picks for the best of 2021 tonight and they managed to get it done in an hour and without any awkward comedy bits.  Here’s hoping the Oscars producers were paying attention.

Anyway, here are the winners!  Oscar front runner Nomadland was not nominated for the Best Ensemble award so I would caution anyone from putting all their money on The Trial of the Chicago 7 to take best picture on the basis of its SAG award.  However, I do think that Youn Yuh-jung and Daniel Kaluuya now have to be considered the front runners in the supporting races.  Chadwick Boseman, of course, was already the front runner for Best Actor.  Could Viola Davis upset Frances McDormand at the Oscars like she did at SAG?  Anything’s possible.

The Set Decorator Society of America Honors Promising Young Woman, Mank, Tenet, and The Prom!

Yesterday, the Set Decorator Society of America (SDSA) announced their picks for the best set designs of 2020!  The winners were Promising Young Woman, Mank, Tenet, and The Prom.  Out of those four, only Mank and Tenet were also nominated for the Best Production Design Oscar.

As far as the Oscar goes, I think Mank probably has the edge over Tenet, if just because the Academy seems to really, really like Mank.

Lisa’s Way Too Early 2022 Oscar Predictions for March!

Yes, it’s time to start this again.

The Oscar nominations for 2020-2021 were finally revealed earlier this month. They weren’t particularly surprising. To be honest, they were kind of boring. But, with those nominations now revealed and the Oscars sets to be awarded at the end of April, that means it’s time to start looking forward to next year!

Of course, it’s hard to say what’s going to happen next year. Most of the films that are scheduled to come out later in 2021 were originally scheduled to come out in 2020. (And they were made in 2018 and 2019, which means the first big releases of 2021 are already dated.) Right now, most of the probable nominees are films that I originally expected to be contenders last year, like Spielberg’s West Side Story and Dune. Needless to say, new contenders will emerge over the next few months. Quite frankly, I’m skeptical of West Side Story because it sounds like the type of project that will bring out all of Spielberg’s worst instincts as a filmmaker. But, until it’s released, it’ll be a contender because he’s Spielberg.

As of right now, we don’t even know what the eligibility window is going to be for the next set of Oscar contenders. Is the Academy going to go back to a December cut-off or are they going to continue to extend the eligibility window. Are we predicting the 2021 Oscars or are we predicting the 2021-2022 Oscars? Again, as of now, we just don’t know. Personally, I’m hoping they return to a December cut-off but I have a feeling that the Academy will disagree.

About the only thing we do know for sure, right now, is that the Academy is going to go back to a set number of nominees. 10 films will be nominated. No more of this maybe 7 or maybe 8 nominees. It’s about time.

Anyway, the list below is based on the assumption that the Academy’s going to go back to the old eligibility window, which means that only films released between the start of March and the end of December will be eligible for Oscar consideration.

It’s also based on the presumption that the Oscars can be predicted this far out. They can’t. But I enjoy making lists and I love the Oscars. Doing these predictions has become a part of my monthly ritual. You know how much I love a good ritual.

The NAACP Image Awards Honor Bad Boys For Life

The winners of the 2020 NAACP Image Awards were announced last night, during a ceremony that was aired on BET.  Personally, I think Bad Boys For Life was a pretty good movie so I’m glad it won.  Sometimes, I think we forget that an entertaining film can also be a good (or, in this case, “outstanding”) film.

The Producers Guild Honors Nomadland

The Producers Guild announced its picks for the best of 2020-2021 last night and, not surprisingly, the winner for Best Film was Nomadland.  Nomadland now pretty much how a clear road to winning the Academy Award for Best Picture at the end of April.  I have to admit that I have yet to see it, even though I’ve got Hulu.  I don’t know …. I just can’t work up any enthusiasm for the prospect of sitting through it.

The Writers Guild Honors Promising Young Woman And, For Some Unfathomable Reason, Borat

The Writers Guild of America has announced their picks for the best written films and TV shows of 2020.  Below are the three film awards.  I’m happy to see Promising Young Woman won for Best Original Screenplay.  As for Borat winning for Best Adapted Screenplay …. yeah, okay.  The WGA can honor whoever they want but just don’t pretend like Borat won for any reason other than the whole Rudy Guiliani thing.  (Does it really take a lot of effort and skill to make Rudy Guiliani look foolish?)  That Borat beat both One Night In Miami and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is embarrassing.
