Today, on the day before the greatest country in the world celebrates its 250th birthday, let’s celebrate America with these pictures taken of its cities.
As happy as I am for America making it to 250 years, it always comes across as dreadfully condescending when Americans claim to live in “the greatest country in the world”.
I’m Australian, and not even I run around calling my country “the greatest in the world”, despite the fact that many of my fellow Australians do.
Regardless of the fact that my home city, Melbourne, has been listed constantly in recent years as “the world’s most liveable city”, I am objective enough to say that’s rubbish. There are cities in Australia that are far better than Melbourne.
Why can’t people just be happy for the country that they live in, instead of turning it into a contest? I love Australia, it’s a beautiful place, and that’s enough for me.
Maybe the saddest thing about Australia is that many foreigners migrate here and don’t truly appreciate Australia. Rather, they just want America-minus-American problems. I find it heartbreaking that people can live here for years and not even have the slightest notion of Waltzing Matilda.
As for America, well, America must have done something right in the last 250 years!
