Though it was celebrated long before that, the 4th of July has been an official holiday since 1941. In honor of Independence Day’s long history, here are some vintage photographs from 4th of July’s of the past. As you can see, you don’t always need fireworks to celebrate America’s birthday (but it helps!).
Today, on the day before the greatest country in the world celebrates its 250th birthday, let’s celebrate America with these pictures taken of its cities.
Every 4th of July, I like to consider the diversity of America. We’re a nation of large cities but we’re also a nation of small towns and rural highways. We are one nation but we are also fifty states, each with its own identity. In honor of America’s 250th birthday, here are some photographs that capture America outside of the cities.
I was at Huffines Park with my camera, surrounded by ducks who were eager to see if I had brought them anything to eat. The ducks the followed me as I walked along the edge of Huffines Creek were cute but the duck who caught my attention was swimming by itself and didn’t seem to care whether I had food or not. The duck had a confidence that left me with no choice but to take its picture.
I believe this is a Muscovy Duck, though I’m hardly an expert. Some people have told me that they find this duck to be ugly. I think the duck has too much personality to be ugly. Sometimes, the loners are the most fascinating subjects around.

One day in 2023, I stepped out in my backyard with my camera. I was just planning on taking a picture of some storm damage and maybe the oak tree in our backyard. Instead, I immediately spotted a little squirrel running along the chain link fence that separated our yard from our neighbor’s. He was moving like he had some place to be but, as soon as he saw me and my camera, he stopped. He stared at me, as if he saying, “Well, hurry up and take your picture.”
I snapped his picture and then I said, “Thank you.”
Upon hearing my thanks, he immediately went on his way, running down the length of the fence and then jumping into a nearby tree.
I think about that squirrel sometimes. This is Texas. We have a lot of squirrels that run through the backyard and living in the neighborhood tries. But it’s hard for me to think of one that had made a great impression than this one. Squirrels don’t have a long lifespan but I like to think that he’s still out there and he’s still posing for anyone with a camera.

I woke up to a glorious fog this morning so naturally, I went for a walk with my camera.

Don’t worry about these dolls. They are totally at home. You should see the other walls and shelves.
They live in a little building in the back yard, just a small percentage of mom’s doll collection. Some of our friends refuse to go in the doll house. They say that can’t handle being alone with the dolls for too long. The dolls wouldn’t hurt a soul.

On a sunny day last November, I stepped outside and spotted something in the upper corner of the garage door.
One spider was working hard to spin a web.
You’ll have to forgive the quality of some of the images. The spider was too busy to stop and pose while I took its picture.
I went on a walk and when I came back an hour later, both the spider and its web were gone. It was a windy day so I imagine the web only lasted a few minutes before it was blown away. I’m glad the wind took care of it for me but I hope the spider knows that I was impressed with its hard work.
