Song of the Day: Main Theme From An Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion by Ennio Morricone

Well, we’re starting in on the final week of our tribute to Ennio Morricone so today, I want to share one of his most important compositions.

The 1970 film, Investigation Of A Citizen About Suspicion, was a dark satire about police corruption and murder in Italy.  It was not only critically acclaimed but it also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.  (That award is now known as Best International Film.)  The success of this film showed that Morricone was more than just a composer of epic Western themes and it also introduced his music to a whole new group of filmgoers.

The 1975 film Autopsy is a great giallo, one that definitely deserves to be better known than it is.  Another thing that deserves to be better known is Ennio Morricone’s wonderful score for this film.  Hence, today’s song of the day: Ennio Morricone’s Main Theme From Autopsy!

Today’s song of the day the main theme from Dario Argento’s The Cat O’Nine Tails.  Ennio Morricone’s score brought a lot of atmosphere to Argento’s classic giallo.

Song of the Day: Red Sonja’s Main Title Theme by Ennio Morricone

Today’s song of the day comes from a film that may not be good but which is kind of fun, 1985’s Red Sonja.  Ennio Morricone’s score for this film was enjoyably silly, much like the film itself.  The main theme finds Morricone in a playful mood so listen and enjoy!

Song of the Day: La Resa by Ennio Morricone

Today’s selection in our on-going tribute to the memory of Ennio Morricone comes to us from the score for Sergio Sollima’s 1966 film, The Big Gundown.

Even though Morricone may be best known for his work with Sergo Leone, he provided scores for several different Spaghetti western directors.  The epic grandeur of the Italian westerns has as much to do with Morricone’s music as it does with any individual director or even any individual star.  For many, Morricone was the composer of the mythological old west.

Today’s song of the day is one of Ennio Morricone’s most popular compositions, Chi Mai.  Chi Mai has actually appeared in several different productions, including 1971’s Maddelana, 1981’s The Professional, 1978’s An Englishman’s Castle, and 1981’s The Life and Times of David Lloyd George.

Today’s song of the day comes from a 1972 Italian film called D’amore si muore.  I haven’t seen this film and I really don’t know much about it.  As far as I can tell, it appears that it might not even be available here in the U.S.  If anything, the film appears to be best-known for Ennio Morricone’s theme music.

Today’s song of the day comes from the soundtrack of Dario Argento’s 1970 film, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage.  Not only was this film Argento’s first as a director but it was also his first collaboration with the great Ennio Morricone.

Song of the Day: My Name Is Nobody by Ennio Morricone

My Name Is Nobody (1973, dir by Tonino Valerii)

Today’s song of the day comes from Ennio Morricone’s score for the 1973 Italian comedic western, My Name Is Nobody.  Though Sergio Leone is only credited as having produced the film, most sources seem to agree that he pretty much directed it as well.  As such, it’s certainly appropriate that My Name Is Nobody would have a classic Morricone score.

As befits the film, Morricone’s music is notably light-hearted, especially when compared to some of his other work.  With this score, I think we get to hear Morricone having a bit of fun.
