Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 8/1/22 — 8/7/22

This was a good week.  The average temperature went from 110 to a mere 99 so I played a little tennis with my sister on Tuesday.  I played a little golf on Wednesday.  I turns out that I’m not particularly good at either one of those activities but still, it was nice to get out for a bit.  I’ve been told that my backhand is as cute as it is inefficient and apparently, the same is true of my swing.  Oh well.  I had fun!

You may have noticed that, after two rather low-key months, the site came alive this week.  That was by design.  I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve got in store for the rest of 2022!

8 Things I Am Looking Forward To In August

Hi there!  Welcome to the wonderful month of August!

August is traditionally one of my favorite months.  August is when I plan out my final vacations of the year.  Usually, at some point in August, I spend a few days up at the lake.  August is hot but it’s usually not as hot as July and, perhaps most importantly, each passing day in August is another day closer to the holiday season!  I imagine that I will be spending the majority of August getting ready for the holidays and especially for TSL’s annual Horrorthon!  In order to try to give our readers the most reviews ever, I’ve started writing and scheduling my Horrorthon posts in July.  I can’t wait for you to see them in October!

Here are a few things that I’m looking forward to in August:

1. A Thousand Years of Longing — Idris Elba!  Tilda Swinton!  George Miller, making his first film since Mad Max: Fury Road!  Critical reviews that have run the gamut from hostile to reverent!  How couldn’t I be looking forward to this?

2.  Prey — It’s a new Predator film!  For some reason, though, it’s called Prey.  I guess the idea is that we’ll care more about the people being hunted than we’ll care about the creature hunting them.  That really doesn’t sound like the Predator fans I know.  Just about everyone that I know is Team Predator.  Well, anyway, we’ll see how this one goes.

3. Spin Me Round — This film is due to be released on August 19th.  It really hasn’t gotten much promotion but it’s directed by Jeff Baena and it stars Alison Brie and I really liked Horse Girl so I’m looking forward to seeing what their next collaboration will be like.  Plus, my girl crush Aubrey Plaza is in it!

4. The Tenebrae Blu-ray Restoration — Synapse is celebrating the 40th anniversary of one of Dario Argento’s greatest films with three-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray 6,000 piece Limited Edition boxed set!  Invest in physical media, especially when it comes to the work of an artist like Argento because you just know that the latest group of moral scolds are going to come for him eventually.

5. The Better Call Saul Finale — Be careful, Jimmy/Saul/Gene!  Seriously, I’m so nervous about how it’s all going to end.

6. Watching Lots and Lots of Horror Movies — October’s coming up, you know!  It’s never too early to start getting ready!

7. Writing About Lots and Lots of Horror Movies — Again, it’s never too soon to start!  In my perfect world, I would write all of my reviews for October, November, and December in August and September and then I would spend the last three months of the year on an island somewhere.  But, that may not be a realistic goal.  Still, I can’t wait to share this year’s Horrorthon with all of you!

8. I Am Groot — I Am Groot is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 10th.  Oh, c’mon, Groot’s adorable!

What are you looking forward to in August?

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 7/25/22 — 7/31/22

After spending three months looking for excuses not to get my car inspected, I finally got it done on Monday.  I really didn’t have much of a choice because my sticker was about to expire.  I had to get one tire replaced but my car passed inspection.  Yay!  So, I finally got that taken care of and now I can’t even remember what caused me to wait until the last minute.

Having spent my Monday getting that taken care of, the rest of this week has been very blissful and very relaxing.  To be honest, I made a decision to rest both last week and this week so that I would fully energized going into the last few months of 2022.  I can’t wait for October!

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 7/4/22 — 7/10/22

James Caan.  L.Q. Jones.  Tony Sirico.  Lenny von Dohlen.  Gregory Itzin.  Larry Storch.  We lost a lot of talented performers this week.  To all of them, I say thank you for the performances and thank you for the memories.  As long as people watch movies, their names and their talent will never be forgotten.

This week has been hot.  Yesterday, it was 106 degrees at its hottest.  Today, the high was 101.  My hope i that eventually, the temperature will only get up to 99 and we’ll get some relief.  Having grown up in the Southwest, I’m used to hot summers but that doesn’t make them any more fun.

Speaking of summer, my summer job of recapping Big Brother for the Big Brother Blog began this week.  It’s always difficult to keep up with everything this time of year but I still love it.

Happy 4th of July From The Shattered Lens!

Happy Independence Day!

Obviously, this 4th of July is going to be different for a lot of people. For many people, this is probably the angriest Independence Day in my lifetime and I know there’s some people who are even saying that it’ll be our last because America’s on the verge of collapsing.  What’s funny, of course, is that I wrote the exact same words last year.  And I think that I may have written them the year before that.  In fact, I think that there hasn’t been an Independence Day since 2010 in which a large group of people were angry and saying that this one was going to be our last.

It’s gotten so predictable that I’m going to repeat exactly what I wrote last year:

Personally, I don’t think it’ll be our last and I think that, though it may not seem like it today, things will get better.  America’s been through tough times before.  If most of the people out there knew as much about history as they thought they did, they’d know that.

Now, myself, I have to admit that I love the whole ritual of fireworks.  I’m a Texan and I’m probably more of a country girl than even I’m willing to admit.  I mean, as sophisticated as I may try to be here on the Shattered Lens, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t own an American flag bikini and if I didn’t kind of get a thrill from the sight of fireworks exploding in the night sky.  Of course, if I had to choose between seeing an uncut version of Von Stroheim’s Greed or watching Fireworks, Von Stroheim would probably win out because I love cinema even more than I love fireworks.  That said, fireworks are still really cool, especially when you’ve got a bunch of stuffy government types telling you not to set them off.

Anyway, here’s my point.  There’s going to be fireworks tonight, whether they’re “legal” or not.  A lot of them will probably be set off by drunk idiots in their backyard.  People are still recovering from having been locked down for the last few years.  There’s a lot of frustration and a lot of people are going to be expressing that frustration by making as much noise as possible.  (I don’t blame the people, by the way.  I blame government officials who, instead of understanding people’s frustrations and trying to help them deal with them, instead used the entire crisis to act like a bunch of petty authoritarians.  A little empathy goes a long way to convincing people to do the right thing.)

So, please, as a favor to me — GET YOUR PETS INSIDE!  KEEP THEM INSIDE!  Seriously, they’re going to be scared to death.  Every 4th of July, our cat hides underneath a bed and refuses to come out until after the fireworks have stopped.  Erin and I usually toss one of his kitty toys under there and he’ll usually end up playing with it until he eventually decides to come out.  It’s funny.  As much as we would worry whenever we saw Doc scramble under the bed, that’s where he feels safe on the 4th of July.  I don’t know if it’s the same for dogs but cats are all about finding a safe place.  Once they do, they can handle just about anything.

Also, please remember that fireworks may be fun to you and me but they’re not fun for people who have served in war and/or who are suffering from PTSD and who might find them triggering.  So, check on your neighbors.  Keep them in mind before you go crazy trying to recreate a combat zone in their neighborhood.

“But Lisa, you just said you love fireworks….”

Yes, I do.  But I love animals and treating people with consideration even more.

Anyway, stay safe out there!  Happy Independence Day from the Shattered Lens!
