Scenes That I Love: Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta Perform You’re The One That I Want From Grease

I just read that Olivia Newton-John passed away earlier today.  She was 73 years old.

Here she is, performing You’re The One That I Want with John Travolta at the climax of 1978’s Grease.  No matter what else you may think about this film (and, to be honest, it’s not one of my favorite musicals, just because of the way that director Randal Kleiser framed most of the dance numbers), you can’t deny that both Olivia and Travolta poured their hearts into this climax.

  1. Definitely my first ever celebrity crush. Twelve year old me was desperately in love with her.

This is sad. I like the movie more than you do, I think, probably in part because of the above

  2. I also enjoyed her music in the film “Xanadu” not as good as grease but it was her beautiful voice that had me hooked. Two amazing female singers from Australia: Olivia Newton John and Helen Reddy, gone but never forgotten. May the beautiful ONJ forever rest in peace

  3. Watching this today 44 years later I have the following thoughts:

This is the earliest movie I can definitively remember seeing in a theater

I formed some of my first impressions about girls and dating from this film (I only had brothers)

Olivia was my first of several Aussie crushes (I had my own Australian gf 8 years later)

I actually once made a mix tape for a girl with Hopelessly Devoted to You on it (cringe)

It would be cool to be in high school as a thirty year old
