Artist Profile: Billy Name (1940 — 2016)


The photographer Billy Name died yesterday at the age of 76.  A former boyfriend of artist Andy Warhol, Name was responsible for taking pictures of Warhol and The Factory in the 1960s.  His photography serves as a historical record of life in New York’s underground art scene.  You can see a few of his photographs below:

Artist Profile: Phil Stern (1919 — 2014)


Before he was hired by Look Magazine, Phil Stern served as a U.S. Army Ranger and developed his photography skills during World War II.  After returning home from the service, Stern became best known for his pictures of Hollywood stars, with many of the images he captured becoming iconic.  Below is a small sampling of his work both during the war and after.

Artist Profile: Cornel Lucas (1920 — 2012)


British photographer Cornel Lucas was a world-renowned film still photographer who, from the start of his career in the late 1940s, revolutionized the field of film portraiture.  During his career he created the defining images of many celebrities at a time when carefully staged publicity photos were essential to the process of turning an actor into a star.  Considered to be a master of lighting, Lucas’s work was so influential that, in 1996, he became the first photographer to receive and award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Permanent collections of his work can be found at London’s  National Portrait Gallery, The National Media Museum and London’s Photographers’ Gallery.  A few examples of Lucas’s work can be found below.
