Today, the Shattered Lens wishes a happy birthday to actress Catriona MacColl.
This scene that I love comes from Lucio Fulci’s 1981 masterpiece, The Beyond. In this scene, Liza (MacColl) first meets the mysterious Emily (Cinzia Monreale). To those not familiar with Fulci’s aesthetic, it may seem strange that Liza would not be more surprised to find a blind girl waiting for her on one of Louisiana’s infamous bridges to nowhere. Those of us who are familiar with Fulci, though, recognize this as being one of his most gloriously dream-like moments.
This scene is also memorable for bringing together two of the best actresses to have worked with Fulci. MacColl appeared in all three of the Beyond films, though she played a different character each time. Monreale also appeared in several Fulci films, including the family western Silver Saddle and the underrated Sweet House of Horrors.
