The fact that ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper ad-libbed lines that have not been topped in American action movies in the several decades since They Live was released tells you all you need to know about the quality of “writers” for such things these days.
“You know, you look like your head fell in the cheese dip back in 1957.”
“Mama don’t like tattletales.”
“I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass—and I’m all out of bubblegum.”
Nowadays, Hollywood mainly churns out superhero slop reheated. One reason why Piper works in this film is because he is portrayed as an Everyman. Additionally, the film was made on a relatively meagre budget, didn’t have a proven A-list player in the central role, yet it opened at number one at the United States box office.
Hollywood in the 21st century, take note.
