Guilty Pleasure No. 62: Backtrack (dir by Dennis Hopper)


Sometimes, you see a film that is just so weird and incoherent that you can’t help but love it.

Of course, it also helps if the film has a once-in-a-lifetime cast of actors who you would never expect to see acting opposite each other.

For me, that’s certainly the case with 1990’s Backtrack.  Directed by Dennis Hopper, Backtrack is a film about an artist (Jodie Foster, channeling Jenny Holzer) who witnesses a mob murder committed by Joe Pesci, Dean Stockwell, Tony Sirico, and John Turturro.  An FBI agent played by Fred Ward suggests that the artist should go into the witness protection program but she doesn’t want to give up her life as a New York sophisticate who creates challenging LED displays and who can eat Sno Balls whenever she gets the craving for one.  (Yes, this is a plot point.)  Turturro and Sirico break into the artist’s apartment and kill her boyfriend, who is played by a wide-eyed Charlie Sheen.  The artist puts on a blonde wig and goes on the run, eventually getting a job in advertising.

Realizing that his men can’t get the job done, mob boss Vincent Price decides to hire a legendary hitman played by Dennis Hopper (who also directed this film) to track down the artist.  However, the hitman becomes fascinating with the artist’s work, finds pictures of her posing in black lingerie, and immediately falls in love with her.  Not only does he wants to save her life but he wants her to wear the same lingerie exclusively for him.  (Yes, this is a pretty big plot point.)  At first, the artist refuses and views the hitman as being some sort of pathetic perv.  But then she discovers that he’s covered her bed with Sno Balls….

Meanwhile, a young Catherine Keener shows up as the girlfriend of a trucker who briefly considers giving the artist a ride to Canada.

And then Bob Dylan shows up, handling a chainsaw.

And there’s Helena Kallianiotes, the outspoken hitch-hiker from Five Easy Pieces, yelling at Joe Pesci!

And there’s Dennis Hopper’s The Last Movie co-star, Julie Adams!  And there’s Toni Basil!  And there’s director Alex Cox!

Dennis Hopper not only starred in Backtrack but he also directed and it’s obvious that he placed a call into just about everyone he knew.  In fact, one could argue that the only thing more shocking than Vincent Price showing up as a mob boss is that Peter Fonda, Karen Black, Elliott Gould, Robert Walker Jr., and Kris Kristofferson are nowhere to be found in the film.  Hopper’s first cut of Backtrack was reportedly 3 hours long but the studio cut it down to 90 minutes, renamed it Catchfire, and Hopper insisted on being credited as Alan Smithee.  Later, Hopper released a two-hour version with the Backtrack title and his directorial credit restored.

Regardless of which version you see, Backtrack is an odd film.  It’s hardly the first film to be made about a hit man falling for his target.  What distinguishes this film is just how bizarre a performance Dennis Hopper gives in the role of the hitman.  It’s as if Hopper gave into every method instinct that he had and the end result was a mix of Blue Velvet‘s Frank Booth and the crazed photojournalist from Apocalypse Now.  Jodie Foster’s cool intelligence makes her the ideal choice for a conceptual artist but it also makes it hard to believe that she would fall for a jittery hitman and, in her romantic scenes with Hopper, Foster often seems to be struggling to resist the temptation to roll her eyes.  Somehow, their total lack of romantic chemistry becomes rather fascinating to work.  They are two talented performers but each appears to be acting in a different movie.  What’s interesting is that I think a movie just about Hopper’s spacey hitman would be interesting (and, if you’ve ever seen The American Friend, it’s hard not to feel that such a movie already exists) but I think a movie about just about Foster’s artist and her life in New York would be just as fascinating.  Taken as individuals, the artist and the hitman are both compelling characters.  Taken as a couple, they don’t belong anywhere near each other.

But let’s be honest.  This is a film that most people will watch for the parade of character actors delivering quirky dialogue.  Even if one takes Hopper and Foster out of this mix, this is an amazingly talented cast.  One need only consider that John Turturro did Do The Right Thing before appearing in this film while Joe Pesci and Tony Sirico did Goodfellas immediately afterwards.  This film features a once-in-a-lifetime cast, made up of actors who were apparently told to do whatever they felt like doing.  Turturro plays up the comedy.  Sirico plays his role with cool menace.  Stockwell barely speaks above a whisper.  Fred Ward plays the one sane man in a world of lunatics. Vincent Price delivers his line as if he’s appearing in one of Roger Corman’s Poe films and somehow, it makes sense that, in the world of Backfire, an Italian gangster would have a snarky, mid-Atlantic accent.

It’s an odd little film, an example of 80s filmmaking with a 70s sensibility.  While it’s not touched with the lunatic genius that distinguished Hopper’s The Last Movie, Backtrack is still something that should be experienced at least once.

Retro Television Reviews: The Love Boat 2.7 “Ship of Ghouls”


Welcome to Retro Television Reviews, a feature where we review some of our favorite and least favorite shows of the past!  On Wednesdays, I will be reviewing the original Love Boat, which aired on ABC from 1977 to 1986!  The series can be streamed on Paramount Plus!

This week, Vincent Price comes aboard for a special Halloween episode!

This is actually, the second time that I’ve reviewed this episode.  I also watched and reviewed it back in 2021.  I enjoyed it the first time that I watched it and my opinion remained the same the second time I watched it.  Still, I’m glad that I rewatched the episode as opposed to trying to write a second review from memory.  There were a few details that I had forgotten.

Anyway, it’s time for…. SHIP OF GHOULS!

Episode 2.7 “Ship of Ghouls”

It’s time for the annual Halloween cruise and Captain Stubing is super excited because he has hired The Amazing Alonzo (Vincent Price) to provide the cruise’s entertainment.  Alonzo is a master illusionist and hypnotist, who can trick people into seeing just about anything.  The episode really doesn’t explain just how exactly Alonzo is able to hypnotize people by just saying a few words to them but no matter.  This is The Love Boat and Vincent Price is …. well, he’s Vincent Price.  Vincent comes across like he’s having the time of his life in this episode and, as such, we accept that Alonzo can cause a bunch of people to think that Gopher and Doc have been turned into two donkeys.  We accept that he can fool the Captain into thinking that the ship’s pool has been turned into a giant ice cream sundae.  We even accept that he can make Isaac’s head appear in a glass of beer.  We accept all of it because it just feels wrong to get hung up on logic when Vincent Price is involved.

The Amazing Alonzo is having so much fun flirting with his elderly groupies and casting spells that his long-suffering fiancé, Ramona (Joan Blondell), dumps him and instead moves into the Captain’s quarters.  At first, Alonzo is jealous of the Captain but he soon comes to realize that the Captain is not romantically interested in Ramona and is just letting her stay in his quarters because she needs some place to stay.  Alonzo also discovers that he can no longer hypnotize people without Ramona’s support.  At the big Halloween party, Alonzo freezes time and apologizes to Ramona.  He also confesses to her that his real name is Wendell.  They walk out of the ship’s ballroom, hand-in-hand.  Yay!

Needless to say, Vincent Price was the highlight of this episode.  However, as was always the case with The Love Boat, there were other passengers on the cruise.

For instance, nine year-old Bobby Diller (Charlie Aikman) is a habitual liar and prankster.  His behavior may be bratty but that’s largely due to the fact that his parents (Gary Collins and Mary Ann Mobley) are getting back together after previously getting a divorce and he’s worried that they’re going to split up again.  Fortunately, Bobby’s lying comes in handy when he spots Karen (Barbara Anderson) preparing to throw herself overboard.   Bobby tells Karen that his mother committed suicide and that he’s never gotten over it.  Karen changes her mind about committing suicide.  Once Karen is safely back on deck, Bobby admits that he lied but then adds, “It’s the last lie I’ll ever tell!”

Why was Karen suicidal?  Karen was a model until a car accident left her with a scar on her face.  Karen is convinced that no one will ever find her to be beautiful again.  Of course, Gopher and Doc both find her to be beautiful and they spend the entire cruise hitting on her and arguing over which one of them has the right to dance with her and have dinner with her.  (As I’ve said in the past, The Love Boat really was a floating HR nightmare.)  Karen, unfortunately, thinks that they’re just doing this as a favor to Karen’s best friend, cruise director Julie.  Fortunately, Bobby’s lie convinces Karen that people can sincerely care about one another.  Also, Karen realizes that she’s too good for either Gopher or Doc.  Good for her!

This was a good episode.  Vincent Price was a delight as always and Barbara Anderson was sympathetic Karen.  All Halloween cruises should be as entertaining as The Love Boat‘s!

Retro Television Review: The Brady Bunch Hour Episode 1.4


Welcome to Retro Television Reviews, a new feature where we review some of our favorite and least favorite shows of the past!  On Fridays, I will be reviewing The Brady Bunch Hour, which ran on ABC from 1976 to 1977.  All nine episodes can be found on YouTube!

Ugh.  What fresh Hell is this?

Episode 1.4

(Dir by Jack Regas, Originally aired on March 4th, 1977)

“It’s the Brady Bunch Hour!” the announcer shouts as the Kroftettes dance at the pool.

As opposed to the previous three episodes, the audience’s applause sounds a bit deflated, as if they know what’s waiting for them.

The Bradys come out and perform (Keep Your) Sunny Side Up, from the hit 1929 musical Sunny Side Up.  If you’ve never heard of this song before, don’t worry.  Up until I watched this episode, I had never heard it either.  And judging from their performance of the song, I would be willing to guess that Bradys hadn’t heard it until maybe an hour before performing it.

While the Bradys sing, the Kroftettes perform water ballet.  For some reason, someone decided it would be a good idea to film the Kroftettes emerging from the water in slow motion, which kind of makes it look like they’re sea beasts emerging from the ocean to kill the Bradys.  Not that the Bradys notice, of course.  They’re too busy trying to remember the lyrics to Keep The Sunny Side Up.  Trying to keep up the family’s flagging energy,  Florence Henderson sings with a lot of intensity.  The kids look embarrassed and who can blame them?  I doubt singing a song from 1929 was one of the selling points when the Kroft Brothers approached them to do this show.  As Mike Brady, Robert Reed has a silly grin on his face.  He’s obviously having the time of his life.  When the song finally ends, Reed is noticeably out of breath.  For whatever reason, The Brady Bunch Hour loved to show the audience the Bradys struggling to catch their breath after every performance.  I guess we were supposed to say, “They worked really hard!” but instead, it leaves the impression that the show is actually killing its cast.

Anyway, the song finally ends and we spend some time with the kids bantering.  Greg is noticeably upset about his siblings being so immature.  An argument breaks out.  Carol yells at everyone to hold it down.  It’s like being forced to watch someone else’s terrible Thanksgiving dinner.  Carol and Mike announce the guests for the show are going to be Vincent Price and Rip Taylor.  Greg gets mad because he wanted to introduce the guests.  IT NEVER ENDS!

Finally, we go to commercial break.  When the show returns, The Brady Bunch is singing It’s Not Where You Start from the 1973 Broadway musical, Seesaw.  Again, you have to wonder if this was really the music that everyone was listening to in 1977.  I mean, this was the same year that Saturday Night Fever came out.  This was the year of Star Wars.  I just doubt there was a nationwide demand for a show featuring Robert Reed singing Broadway show tunes.  Again, this performance ends with close-ups of Robert Reed and Florence Henderson gasping for breath.  Obviously, performing requires a lot of physical exertion but Reed gasps like he’s got a pack-a-day smoking habit.  Carol explains that they just sang this song because it reflected an experience that they had with Greg earlier in the week.  What a weird way to introduce a flashback.

We cut to the Brady compound, where Greg is in the living room, attempting to write a song, strumming his guitar, and getting annoyed with the family.  In Greg’s defense, his family is loud and annoying but, at the same time, is there no other room in the house where Greg could have worked.  Anyway, Greg announces that he’s going to have to get his own place.  Seeing as how Greg is in his 20s …. well, yes, he does.  There’s really no reason why Greg (and for that matter, Marcia) should still be living in the Brady House and having to ask his stepmother for permission to stay out late.

Anyway, Mike and Carol attempt to have a serious conversation with Greg about his desire to move out so, of course, Rip Taylor shows up as Jackie Merrill, the landlord.  It turns out that Jackie has a place that Greg can rent.  “It’s funky but not junky!” Jackie announces.  Mike orders Jackie to leave.  “I see Papa Bear is cranky!” Jackie replies.  “Dad,” Greg announces, “I love you …. but I’m not your BOY anymore!”

DAMN!  LOOK AT GREG STANDING UP TO HIMSELF!

We then cut to Marcia Brady, saying that everyone at the Brady House was really sad about Greg wanting to leave.  And then from there, we cut to Jackie showing Greg his new apartment.

Someone knocks on the door and demands to be let in.  And …. hey!  WHAT’S VINCENT PRICE DOING HERE!?

Vincent asks Jackie and Greg if they’re dead.  When he discover that they’re alive, Vincent explains that he’s a ghost hunter and Greg’s apartment is haunted by “Stella Beaumont, among others.”  Vincent explains that Greg looks a lot like Stella’s great grandson, Dinky, who died when he fell off of Greg’s new couch.  Vincent Price has a lot of fun hamming it up but you probably already guessed that.

While Greg worries about ghosts, his family sits around the house and worries about him.  Greg calls Carol so that he can give the family his new phone number.  Carol starts to cry.  “Say hello to everyone for me,” Greg says.  Uhmm …. did Greg move to another country?  Aren’t they all in Hollywood and still doing a variety show together?  Why are they acting like they’re never going to see him again?  Did Vincent Price talk to them?

Anyway, we then cut to Carol singing Traces while Greg sings All By Myself.  As usual, Florence Henderson knocks the song out of the park.  Barry Williams, however, struggles a bit as All By Myself is a terrible fit for his rather limited vocal range.  Don’t get me wrong.  Barry Williams has a perfectly pleasant singing voice but when he tries to hit those emotional high notes, it’s just cringe city.

Mike Brady welcomes us to “the second half of the Brady Bunch hour …. minus one.”  Mike doesn’t seem to be too upset about Greg moving out.  It’s interesting that Greg’s stepmother seems to be more emotionally invested in him than his own father.

We then cut to Carol and Greg in their living room, talking about how all of their children will have soon moved out.  Carol is upset that Greg is not answering the phone at his new apartment.  Mike tells her that it’s good that Greg is out and having fun.  Suddenly, Greg rings the doorbell and says that he was just in the neighborhood.  Greg then confesses that he owes Carol and Mike an apology for moving out without telling them and he also explains that he hates his new apartment.  Greg says that he wants to come back and live in his old house.  I guess Mr. Merrill forgot to have him sign a lease.

We cut to Peter saying that we’ve reached the part of the show where Greg always pushes him into the pool.  But this week, Peter says, he’s going to do the pushing.  Peter sneaks up on Greg but, just as Peter is about give him a shove, Greg moves slightly to the left and — yep, Peter falls in the pool!  It’s kind of sad that this recurring bit is the only part of The Brady Bunch Hour that I ever find myself looking forward to.  Greg then introduces a giant creature named H.R. Puff-in-Stuff, who proceeds to “lip-synch” to an Elton John song called Celebration.

Alice the Maid comes out on stage and explains that “Well, Greg’s back now,” and the family is going to throw a party for him.  But first, it’s time for Marcia to sing Time In A Bottle.  Much as with Barry Williams, it’s not that Maureen McCormick has a bad voice.  She has a perfectly pleasant voice.  But she’s singing a song that’s way outside of her range.  Plus, someone decided that she should wear her hair up for her performance, which was not a good look for her.  Maureen McCormick had really pretty hair so why would you hide that?

We then cut to Jackie Merrill, delivering a Tennessee Williams-style monologue about how he was only doing his job when he gave Greg that terrible apartment.  The Bradys then throw a party for Greg.  Bobby gets a cake smashed in his face.  Bleh.  I hate that gag, it’s so messy.  Is this over yet?

Actually, it is almost over.  The Bradys perform the finale, a medley of songs about being happy, including the Happy Days theme song.

This episode was kind of annoying but at least it had Vincent Price.  Plus, that bit with the dancing monster was enjoyably weird.  I don’t blame Greg for wanting to get out of there.

Horror On The Lens: House On Haunted Hill (dir by William Castle)


The original The House on Haunted Hill is a classic and one that we make it a point to share every Halloween.  And since October is nearly over, now seems like the perfect time to do so!

Horror on the Lens: The Last Man on Earth (dir. by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow)


Hi there and Happy October 28th!  For today’s treat from the ranks of horror films that have fallen into the public domain, I present to you one of the most important films in horror history.  Though it wasn’t appreciated when it was first  released back in 1964, The Last Man On Earth was not only the 1st Italian horror film but George Romero has also acknowledged it as an influence on his own Night of the Living Dead.

It’s easy to be a little bit dismissive of The Last Man On Earth.  After all, the low-budget is obvious in every scene, the dubbing is off even by the standards of Italian horror, and just the name “Vincent Price” in the credits leads one to suspect that this will be another campy, B-movie.  Perhaps that’s why I’m always surprised to rediscover that, taking all things into consideration, this is actually a pretty effective film.  Price does have a few over-the-top moments but, for the most part, he gives one of his better performances here and the black-and-white images have an isolated, desolate starkness to them that go a long way towards making this film’s apocalypse a convincing one.  The mass cremation scene always leaves me feeling rather uneasy.

The film is based on Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend and no, it’s nowhere as good as the book.  However, it’s a lot better than the Will Smith version.

If you have 87 minutes to kill, please enjoy The Last Man On The Earth.

Great Moments In Television History #25: Vincent Price Meets The Muppets


In 1977, during the 16th episode of The Muppet Show, Kermit The Frog got a chance to interview Vincent Price and show off his vampire moves.  Later, no worse for wear, Vincent joined with the Muppets to sing a song.

I’m surprised that this episode was aired on January 16th, 1977 and not during October.

Horror Scenes That I Love: The Opening of House on Haunted Hill


Today’s horror scene that I love comes from 1959’s House on Haunted Hill.  As the film opens, Vincent Price takes a moment to speak directly to the audience and introduce the characters who are coming to spend the night at the house.  Price, who is one of the patron saints of October, delivers his lines with such relish that it’s impossible not to stick around to see who survives the night.

Music Video of the Day: Vincent Price by Deep Purple (2013, directed by Joern Heitman)


A young couple goes to the a dungeon and soon, they find that they’ve become black-and-white and they can no longer hear.  They’ve become a part of a silent movie, starring someone who looks much like Vincent Price.  Of course, the real-life Price didn’t appear in any silent movies but, overall, this is still an effective music video.

The director, Joren Heitmann, has several music videos to his name.  He directed multiple videos for Rammstein and Sarah Connor.  In fact, one of the videos that he did for Sarah Connor was for a song called Vincent.

Deep Purple was first formed in 1968.  As with most bands that have been around for that long, several members have come and gone over the years but the important thing is that the band is still going today.

I’ve been told that this video is a good example of what the site hopes to accomplish this October.
