Lisa’s Week In Review: 3/9/20 — 3/15/20

Well, it’s been quite a week, hasn’t it?

Due to the whole coronavirus thing, I am going to be working from home for a month!  Believe it or not, I actually have jury duty in about three weeks.  I’m expected to ride the train and then take a bus down to the filthiest courthouse in the city so that I can sit in a small space with a bunch of strangers just so I can be told to go home after eight hours.  I don’t think so.  I’m guessing that, with everything closing, my jury duty will probably be canceled on its own.  Let’s hope so!

(Update: It was.  An hour after I wrote this, it was announced that all civil and criminal trials have been canceled in Dallas County until May 8th.)

Anyway, at least I’ll have a lot of time to watch a lot of movies and review them.  I’ve heard some people are worried about what’s going to happen if Netflix and all the other streaming services crashes.  I’m happy to say that, down here in the Texas offices of the TSL, we have 5,000 DVDS, blu-rays, and VHS tapes.  Seriously, you should never stop buying physical media because you never know when you might need it.

Rest assured, everyone, that we here at the Shattered Lens are staying safe and taking precautions!  We hope you are too.

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 2/17/20 — 2/23/20

As of this weekend, Jeff & I are on vacation and really, it couldn’t have happened a minute too soon.  We’re currently in London and I’m looking forward to two weeks of getting away from …. well, everything but this site.  Like I do before every vacation, I’ve written up some reviews that will drop while I’m gone.  So, I’ll be here even when I’m not here.

Last week, cancel culture came for Much Ado About Cinema’s Dilara Elbir, attacking her on twitter over a 4 year-old private message in which she used the n-word.  The twitter mob came for her and it continued to come for her, even after she apologized and every writer who worked for Much Ado publicly quit on her.  It kept coming for her until she attempted to commit suicide.  Dilara posted three videos to twitter, sobbing and cutting herself.  (The videos have since been taken down.  Amazingly, some of the same people who drove Dilara to very publicly hurting herself than had the nerve to complain that she hadn’t included trigger warnings with the videos.)  Fortunately, some of the people who saw the videos called the police and they were able to get Dilara to the hospital in time to save her life.

Needless to say, there have been a lot of recriminations in the days since.  There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not cancel culture went too far, hounding Dilara even after she had apologized and lost all of her writers.  Do we now live in a world where forgiveness is no longer possible and where no one is allowed a second chance to make up for their past mistakes?  A lot of people have been talking about mental illness and how we never know how someone might be hurting on the inside.  There’s been a lot of talk and some of it’s sincere and, quite frankly, some of it has definitely been performative.  It’s easy to talk about doing the right thing after the damage has already been done.  There’s a lot to be said about all of this but I’m not going to say it right now because I’m still processing it all.  I hope lessons will be learned though I doubt that they have.  (When last I checked, people were attempting to cancel the people who “cancelled” Dilara by using many of the same techniques that they used on her, which would seem to indicate that most people haven’t learned anything.)  I hope that Dilara will recover and I hope that the world will become a better place.

Stay supple fear not, play nice, and love those around you!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 2/10/20 — 2/16/20

I hope everyone had a happy Valentine’s Day!

Well, let’s just admit the obvious.  After last week’s Oscar Sunday extravaganza, there was no way that I wasn’t going to spend most of this week getting some rest and that’s exactly what I did.  A part of me regrets it because I’ve always been the type who thinks, “That hour you spent doing nothing was an hour that you’ll never get back!”  But, as I’ve matured and grown or whatever, I’ve come to realize that sometimes you really have to appreciate the peace of doing nothing for an hour.

However, on Friday, I did finally manage to start my new review series: Love on the Shattered Lens!  All through the rest of February, I’ll be reviewing some films about love.  Some of them are happy films.  Some of them are sad films.  Some are good.  Some are bad.  And I’ll be reviewing them all!

Anyway, here’s what I watched, read, and listened to this week.  As you’ll notice, this was a very musical week for me.  That’s because I hosted the weekly #ILikeToWatch live tweet on Saturday and I had 60 minutes worth of music to select.  As you can tell from the end result, it was a fun search!

Lisa’s Week In Review — 1/27/20 — 2/2/20

This has been a great week!  Not only did I finally get over being sick but, on Thursday, I got to see my favorite band, Saint Motel, live!  They’re currently touring to support their latest, The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Part 1 and they put on a hell of a show!  Seriously, this groups put out the most positive vibes of any group that I’ve ever seen perform live so if you get a chance to see them, take it!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 1/20/20 — 1/26/20

Well, this week kind of sucked.  Things started out okay but then I got massively sick on Thursday and I’m only now really starting to recover.  So, basically, I’ve been out-of-it for the last four days.  (Actually, it’s more like the last 4-and-a-half days because I first started to feel a little bit ill around Wednesday evening.)

Anyway, I’ve been forcing myself to rest and “get better” and all that good stuff.  It sucks because I’m not very good at resting but oh well.  Here’s what I was able to accomplish this week, despite being under the weather.  (I mentioned on twitter that I was “under the weather” and a total stranger responded with something about how there’s this huge conspiracy to control the weather and really, folks — don’t start that shit when you’re talking to someone who is already feeling ill and, therefore, not in a particularly indulgent mood.  I’ve never hit the block button so fast in my life.)
