Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 8/16/21 — 8/22/21

This week …. it’s been difficult.  I’m usually avoid the 24-hour news channels.  I usually don’t watch CNN, MSNBC, or FOX because I find the relentless partisan focus of those networks to be difficult to take.  (CNN is the worst because at least MSNBC and FOX are honest enough to admit that they take one side over the other.  CNN’s still pretending that Chris Cuomo was hired for his skills as a journalist.)  But this week, I’ve been watching the news from Afghanistan.  It’s made me think about a lot of things.  Last weekend, I was locked out of my Twitter account for 18 hours and I acted like it was the end of the world.  Meanwhile, for many people in Afghanistan and other countries, they’re going to be lucky to even survive the week.  I’ve been able to get an education, a good job, and I live a life that I love and, far too often, I take all of that granted.

That said, I have to take a break from it all next week.  I’m not going to tune out the news, of course.  That’s never a real solution, no matter how nice it sounds.  But I can’t watch any more of the 24 hour news channels.  I just can’t.  The relentless doomsaying is just not healthy.

On the plus side, I watched a lot of movies this week.  And I’m going to watch a lot more this upcoming week.  I’ve got 9 days to watch 56 movies.  That’s like …. 7 movies a day.  Wow, that’s a lot.  Well, I better get started then!

Lisa Marie’s Week In Review: 8/2/21 — 8/8/21

Ugh!  This week!

I already mentioned this in my week in television post but I basically spent almost this entire week in bed, suffering from and then recovering from a sinus infection.  You know how you always hear about writers who wrote their best novels while they were stuck in bed, recovering from illness?  Well, that was not my experience.  Instead, I was miserable.  I read nothing.  I wrote little.  I watched TV once on Thursday.  I did watch a few movies but most of them were on Monday afternoon, before I got totally ill.  Basically, from Monday night to Friday afternoon, I was too out of it to really focus on anything.

Seriously, it sucked!

But, the important thing is that it appears to be over so and I’ve got a lot of things to watch on my DVR over the upcoming few days!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 7/19/21 — 7/25/21

At this point, I’m ready to just end July and move on. Seriously, this has been the most frustrating month of the year for me so far. Every week has brought a new emergency to deal with and those emergencies have all conspired to keep me from doing as much writing and watching and reading and reviewing as I would like to. So, as far as I’m concerned, July’s over. HAPPY AUGUST EVERYONE!

Actually, this week really hasn’t been that bad. I was upset because my car failed inspection on account that I just got the battery changed and apparently, I needed to drive it for 60-80 miles so that the computer can record some data about emissions or something like that. That was a pain and it’s certainly not doing much to make me any less anti-government but, at the same time, I’ve also had some fun driving the car around town. I’m taking my car back in on Monday and it should pass easily. Plus, I’ve been enjoying the first few days of the Olympics and I look forward to watching more of it over the upcoming week.

As for what else I’m doing over the next seven days, I’m continuing something that I started this week. With the exception of the Olympics, I will not be watching any of the 24/7 news stations (no Fox, no CNN, no MSNBC). I also will not be checking any of the big political accounts on twitter. This is something that I started last Monday so that I could get caught up on some things without any distractions. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, getting the car inspected turned out to be an even bigger distraction than even the most partisan accounts on twitter. So, I’m going to keep trying this week. Wish me luck. As much as some of you may be tired of reading my complaints about not getting enough done during the week, how do you think I feel writing them?

Anyway, here’s what I watched, read, and listened to this week!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 7/5/21 — 7/11/21

For the record, I hate the term “adulting” and yet, that’s probably the only term that I can use to describe last week.  I acted like an adult and I did a bunch of adult things and none of them make for a particularly a good story but they still had to be done.  For instance, I got the battery changed in my car.  I paid all of my bills.  I went over to my Dad’s house to make sure that the landscapers trimmed the trees so that he didn’t get fined by the city.

Actually, I guess that last bit might make a good story.  The city was actually going to fine my Dad because the branches on the trees in his front yard were reaching across something called “the gutter line.”  My Dad is having a few health issues right now so he really wasn’t feeling up to doing it himself.  So, I called the landscapers and I made sure that they took care of it.  That’s not a problem, of course.  The problem is that it had to be done in the first place.  The letter that the city sent my Dad was particularly snooty as well, as if a branch reaching across the gutter line was the greatest sin known to man.  My main regret is that the branches all went into a woodchipper because I would have liked to have dumped them in front of city hall!

(I also have to say that I couldn’t look at the woodchipper without thinking about that scene in Fargo, where Frances McDormand comes across Peter Stomare disposing of Steve Buscemi.  Agck!)

Anyway, I did get a chance to watch a few movies and to follow the news from Cannes.  Here’s what I watched, read, and listened to this week:

Lisa’s Week in Review: 6/28/21 — 7/4/21

Happy 4th of July!

Well, this was a lethargic week and I am thoroughly embarrassed to admit that this is the first week this year in which I did not read a book.  The heat got to me.  It got to a lot of people apparently.  For once, it’s actually hotter up north than it is down here.

I got a lot of accomplished when we were snowed in back in February.  Extreme cold apparently makes me much more productive than extreme heat.  So, I may not have gotten much done this week but at least I learned something!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 6/21/21 — 6/27/21

This week …. bleh.  It was long and it was hot and the details about what Britney Spears’s life is like left me totally shaken.  The year is almost halfway over and I still don’t feel like I’ve really begun to get started on any of the things that I started this year planning to accomplish.  Of course, in between the ice storms, the nonstop rain, and now the heat wave, the weather has not always been cooperative.

Oh well!  Despite the negative tone of the paragraph above, I’m a positive person at heart and I know that this upcoming week will be an improvement.  Not only is the 4th of July approaching but it’s supposed to rain nonstop for the next six days!  So, instead of the high being 99, it might be 89!  Woo hoo!  Cold front!

On that hopeful note, here’s what I watched, listened to, and read this week!

Lisa’s Week In Review: 6/14/21 — 6/20/21

Summer temperatures arrived this week!  We’ve gone from being in the 70s to being in the high 90s and, as a result, we’re cranking up the AC here at the Texas offices of the Shattered Lens and we’re hoping for some sort of eventual relief.

Still, there is good news.  The local Alamo Drafthouse will soon be reopening.  2021 will soon be halfway through.  In another few months, it’ll be my favorite time of year!  It’s all just a matter of surviving the summer heat.  Best of luck to us all!

As for next week, I will be divorcing myself from the news and only focusing on movies and writing.  It’s not going to be easy because I actually am kind of interested in who is going to win the NYC mayoral primaries.  Then again, it’s a New York election so it’s not like they’re going to finish counting the votes before August anyways.
