Horror On TV: Fear Itself 1.12 “Echoes” (dir by Rupert Wainwright)

For our final episode of Fear Itself, we have Echoes.  In this episode, a man discover that he was a killer in a previous life.  Director Rupert Wainwright also directed the remake of The Fog.  Does anyone remember that remake?

Though this episode was meant to air in 2008, the show went on hiatus and was then cancelled before it could air.  It was finally released in 2009, as a part of the Fear Itself box set.

Horror on TV: Fear Itself 1.11 “The Spirit Box” (dir by Rob Schmidt)

In this episode of Fear Itself, a dead teenage girl wants her friends to help her get vengeance on her murderer.  This episode may be called “The Spirit Box” but it’s better known as “The One With Anna Kendrick.”

This episode was meant to air in 2008 but Fear Itself went on hiatus and was cancelled before it happened.  The Spirit Box was later included when Fear Itself was released on DVD.

Lisa Marie’s Week In Television: 10/4/26 — 10/10/26

The Amazing Race (Wednesday Night, CBS)

I wrote about the Amazing Race here.

Austin City Limits (PBS)

On Friday night, I watched a performance by Sienna Spiro.  She was okay.  I prefer EDM but that’s not the Austin City Limits way.

Carrie (Prime)

I started watching Mike Flanagan’s Carrie on Friday.  I’ve got two more episodes to go so I’ll probably review it tomorrow.  I’ll hold off on giving my thoughts until then.

Fear Itself (YouTube)

I’ve been watching and posting episodes of Fear Itself all week.

Kitchen Nightmares (Tubi)

I watched four episodes on Wednesday.  Two of the episodes deal with the Main Street Bistro and its arrogant owner.  One episode was about Yanni’s, a Greek restaurant owned by a loud family.  The final episode was the classic episode that featured Gordon’s visit to Amy’s Baking Company in Scotsdale, Arizona.  It’s hard to believe that episode is now 13 years old.

The Steve Wilkos Show (Tubi)

I watched two episodes on Tuesday.  Both dealt with bad and abusive parents.  Steve got mad and yelled a lot but he was totally justified in doing so.  Some people really don’t deserve to be parents.

Survivor (Wednesday Night, CBS)

I wrote about Survivor here.

Horror on TV: Fear Itself 1.10 “Chance” (dir by John Dahl)

Tonight’s episode of Fear Itself features Ethan Embry as Chance Miller, whose run of bad luck gets even worse once he finds himself having to deal with an evil doppelganger of himself.  This psychological thriller was directed by noir specialist, John Dahl.

This was one of the episodes of Fear Itself that was filmed in 2008 but wasn’t aired before the show went on hiatus.  It was included when the show was released on DVD in 2009.

Horror On TV: Fear Itself 1.9 “Something With Bite” (dir by Ernest Dickerson)

On tonight’s episode of Fear Itself, Wendell Pierce plays a veterinarian who gets bitten by a werewolf and then has to prove that he’s not the same werewolf who is currently on a killing spree.  This episode was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who first came to prominence as Spike Lee’s cinematographer and subsequently directed several horror films and thrillers of his own.

This episode didn’t air because Fear Itself was put on hiatus in July of 2008.  However, it was included when the show was subsequently released n DVD.

Horror On Television: Fear Itself 1.8 “Skin and Bones” (dir Larry Fessenden)

On tonight’s episode of Fear Itself, Doug Jones plays a rancher who disappears on one snowy night.  After ten days, he returns but there’s something different about him.  This episodes is a good example of rural horror.  Don’t go hunting unless you’re sure you can get back.

This episode originally aired on July 31st, 2008.  It was the last episode to air before Fear Itself went on hiatus for the Summer Olympics.  The show never returned, though the remaining five episodes were subsequently released on DVD.

Horror On TV: Fear Itself 1.7 “Community” (dir by Mary Harron)

In tonight’s episode of Fear Itself, Bobby (Brandon Routh) and Tracy (Shiri Appleby) are a young couple who move to a gated community and learn that there are consequences to upsetting the HOA.  The story is familiar but Mary Harron does a good job of combining satire with chills.  Watching how Bobby and Tracy are pressured to conform to the rules of the community, it was hard not to be reminded of the excesses of the COVID era.

(Of course, the truly interesting thing about the COVID era was seeing how many self-styled nonconformists revealed their true selves once they were actually put in a position where taking a stand could have had consequences.  They know who they are.)

This episode originally aired on July 24th, 2008.  Mary Harron, of course, is best known for directing American Psycho.

Horror On TV: Fear Itself 1.6 “New Year’s Day” (dir by Darren Lynn Bousman)

Tonight’s episode of Fear Itself is a macabre zombie story that takes place on New Year’s Day and which features a twist ending!  Watch this one with the lights off.

The episode originally aired on July 17th, 2008.  Director Darren Lynn Bousman is best-known for his Saw films.  Personally, I’m a fan of his 2010 thriller, Mother’s Day.

Horror On TV: Fear Itself 1.5 “Eater” (dir by Stuart Gordon)

On tonight’s episode of Fear Itself, a young police officer (Elisabeth Moss) finds herself assigned to be a part of a detail that is guarding a serial killer cannibal named Duane Mellor (Stephen R. Hart).  As the night goes on, strange things start to happen and it becomes apparent that Mellor has powers and habits that go beyond just eating people.

You may have noticed that I skipped the fourth episode of Fear Itself.  That episode was In Sickness and In Health and it was about a bride-to-be who, on her wedding day, receives a note that reads, “The person you are marrying is a serial killer.”  It all leads to a pretty predictable twist.  The reason why I decided not to post that episode is because it was written by Victor Salva, a filmmaker who sexually abused the 12 year-old star of his first film and who, after serving 15 months in prison, somehow went on to continue making movies.  I’ve made a personal decision not to review anything involving Victor Salva.  That said, I do think everyone has to make their own decision as far as problematic filmmakers are concerned so I will say that the episode is on YouTube if you want to watch it.

As for Eater, it’s an intense and atmospheric episode that benefits from Stuart Gordon’s strong direction and which features good performances from both Moss and Hart.  You can watch it below!

Horror on TV: Fear Itself 1.3 “Family Man” (dir by Ronny Yu)

On tonight’s episode of Fear Itself, a family man (Colin Ferguson) and a serial killer (Clifton Collins, Jr) both have near-death experiences and end up switching bodies.  Before you can say “I’m going to take his …. face …. off,” the family man finds himself in prison and the serial killer finds himself living with a family!  Why, it would be almost be funny if not for the fact that the killer specializes in killing families.

This episode aired on June 19th, 2008.  Ronny Yu also directed Freddy vs Jason.
