American Psycho a horror flic? lmao it is a social commentary, and really a dark comedy. Or for those of us who actually lived through the 80s and that yuppie scum wall street corporate raider greed is good shit, its just a reality flic/comedy…I mean really if you lived during the reagan years you know this movie is a comedy. It does lack the pastels neon excess but that was the miami vice influence of the 84 era which 80-86 was full blown aquanet pastel neon new wave nirvana. 87 is where American Psycho pretty much begins and ends. This is the blatant yuppie scum greed is good era…Ivan Boesky junk bonds corporate raiding bmws and perrier..this was 87 until the crash in October…the stock market crash that is…Brett Eaton Ellis captures the whole thing perfectly. Bateman and his “friends” are so over the top yuppie assholes you can’t even let “horror” enter your mind when watching it. If you do you simply show your own ignorance of the time and the material. it is not a horror in the classical sense. this isn’t “they’re coming to get you Barbara”, or “the power of christ compels you” or even some guy standing in a clothline wearing blue coveralls and a shatner mask turned inside out horror…this is the horror of the 80s…and that horror was EXCESS. A less gory version is just “Less than Zero” but the premise and themes are the same. The decadence and decay wasn’t “visible” to most or even mainstream. The excess made the news but it was “no big deal” (nod to the Love and Rockets song). The 80s were heaven and hell and everything inbetween all wrapped up in neon spandex blown dry held in place w/the superglue of hairspray (it was the god of all hair products, if gel wouldn’t or couldn’t hold it was aquanet or be a punk and use glue and an ironing board to get the hawk to stand up). But it wasn’t horror. True 80s horror was “The day After” a tv movie by ABC that aired in 1983 with Jason Robards and Steve Guttenberg…That was true horror, and not too fictional…the other true horror that could be viewed during the 80s was simply the news…the AIDS epidemic, and the gov’ts failed response. So many things but “American Psycho”…lmao, it really is missing some john wayne bullshit to totally sum up the 80s, or some cowboy ronnie bs…jerry falwell…hell so many things that could’ve been in there that were REAL HORRORS…which again is why its not a horror movie. its a COMEDY and COMMENTARY….one that unless you lived it you won’t get. And you didn’t get it…I have yet to read ONE review that gets it, at least not one review by anyone who wasn’t alive during that decade. Live commenting on twitter is…yawn. I think a livestream on youtube would’ve been a much more interesting thing. You watching the movie doesn’t have to be broadcast on yt thereby avoiding copyright bs…AND you don’t even need to show yourself either…a stupid slideshow of stills from the movie, characters other 80s events etc…all you have to do is respond to a live chat lol…far more interactive and probably more profitable. I only commented on this because of a review you did of something that was really wrong and showed you really didn’t know shit about the 80s and were talking out your ass and hadn’t lived them ;). This again demostrates it. your writing has potential but, I really can’t take anyone who gives any cred to big brother or any “reality” show seriously…and calling this movie a horror…lol…again can’t take you remotely serious since you clearly don’t understand the movie or the original source material or the DECADE…ttfn.
