Trailer: The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch seems like one of those actors who is destined to eventually get at least one or two Oscar nominations over the course of his career.  Last year, a lot of people thought he might end up getting nominated for The Fifth Estate but then the film came out and promptly bombed.  In 12 Years A Slave, his supporting performance was overshadowed by Michael Fassbender’s more traditionally villainous turn.  If they awarded an Oscar for voice over work (and they really should), then Cumberbatch would have probably picked up the award for bringing Smaug to life in The Hobbit.  

So, Cumberbatch still awaits his first nomination but he might not have to wait too much longer.  In the upcoming Imitation Game, Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing, who was responsible for cracking Germany’s secret code during World War II.  After the war, Turing was prosecuted under the UK’s anti-gay laws.  This is one of those true stores that would seem to be the right film at the right time to be a potential Oscar contender.

A trailer — which focuses on Turing’s work during World War II and only hints at the persecution that would define the rest of his life — was released earlier today.  And you can watch it below!

Let’s Play Catch Up With The Trailer for Exodus: Gods and Kings

Here’s another trailer that came out while I was busy Embracing the Melodrama.  I’m not really sure how I feel about Exodus: Gods and Kings.  The trailer looks good and epic and all that but what’s the deal with all of the”sword and sandal” films coming out this year?  Not only do we have two Hercules films, Pompeii, and the 300 sequel, we also had Noah and now we’ve got Exodus coming out.  Last year, we saw a spate of end-of-the-world films.  This year, we’re seeing films that are meant take place at the beginning of the world.  Anything to avoid dealing with present, I suppose.

Incidentally, I still say that Ridley Scott’s previous film, The Counselor, was far better than most people realize.

Trailer: Horns (Official Teaser)

The kids of the Harry Potter film franchise have all gone their separate ways. Some have moved on to taking smaller roles. Others have begun to take on roles that tries to rehabilitate their image from just being a Harry Potter actor. Emma Watson has had some success in redoing her post-Potter image. Yet, it’s the “Chosen One” himself who looks to really be going with as many left-field film role choices since the end of the franchise.

Daniel Radcliffe has been taking some interesting risks with his post-Potter career. Even before the franchise was over he had begun working on redoing his image. Whether it was doing the stage play Equus or taking on a horror film role with the gothic horror The Woman in Black, Radcliffe seems more than willing to leave his Potter days behind him.

The first trailer from the film adaptation of the Joe Hill penned dark fantasy Horns has now arrived. We see brief glimpses of Radcliffe in the title role with the proverbial horns that becomes the center of the film’s plotline.

Time will tell if Horns will be another notch in making Daniel Radcliffe less the Potter-kid and ore the talented actor he’s turning out to be.

Horns will be making it’s presence know this Halloween 2014.

Gone Girl – The 2nd Trailer

The 2nd trailer for Gone Girl was released recently. David Fincher’s and Gillian Flynn’s film adaptation of Flynn’s popular novel focuses on a writer dealing with the disappearance of his wife. While the trailer expands things a bit compared to the teaser (as any trailer would), there’s the strangest set of casting choices for this film. What I’m most excited about is Flynn handling her own screenplay. Movies are always different from books, but I’m hoping it works out. One fills in the blanks as they go through the story, and I read this before finding out anything concrete about the film. Additionally, I’m also curious about what Trent Reznor  and Atticus Ross are doing for the soundtrack, which also comes out around the same time.

Gone Girl premieres in cinemas on October 3rd.

Here’s The Trailer for James Gandolfini’s Final Film

The DropEarlier this year, I was one of my many people to be surprised by the fact that James Gandolfini did not receive a posthumous Oscar nomination for his performance in Enough Said.  After all, Gandolfini was a talented and popular actor who died far too early and his performance in Enough Said showed that he was capable of playing a lot more than just Tony Soprano or other gangster types in films like Killing Them Softly.

Judging from this recently released trailer, The Drop will features Gandolfini in the type of role that he was best known for.  Along with Gandolfini, The Drop features Tom Hardy and the only girl with the dragon tattoo who matters, Noomi Rapace.  Perhaps best of all, it was written by Dennis Lehane, whose books have inspired superior crime films like Mystic River, Shutter Island, and Gone, Baby, Gone.

If you’re a fan of movies about the military, like Arleigh or Erin, you will probably be excited by the first trailer for the upcoming World War II film Fury.  I have to admit that I’m not particularly a fan of war movies but I still think that the Fury trailer is undeniably effective.  I don’t know if I’ve quite bought into the idea that Fury is going to be an Oscar contender (as some Oscar bloggers are suggesting) but the trailer still suggests that Fury will, at the very least, be better than The Monuments Men.

The Purge: Anarchy Trailer #2: Grillo Strikes back

Last summer’s surprise hit, The Purge, was something that ended up being better than it should’ve been. Using a premise that the United States of America has a yearly 12-hour event where all crimes are legal in order for the population to vent their frustrations was an interesting one. The fact that this event was cooked up by what the film calls America’s Second Founding Fathers was a nice touch.

The film itself started well enough but ended up becoming another take on the home invasion trope. At least, the box office success of the film meant a sequel was quickly greenlit. What we have with The Purge: Anarchy takes the original film’s premise and goes much wider in scope and scale. Instead of the film using a home invasion premise we now go the “Most Dangerous Game” route. If we’re to believe what the latest trailer is showing it’s that the Purge Event might be something cooked up by those rich and powerful.

We also have the very awesome Frank Grillo channeling his inner Frank Castle and using the Purge event to find those who killed his son in the year’s previous Purge.

This sequel has me more excited for it than I probably should, but if the film pulls off half of what this trailer promises then I’ll be satisfied.

Oh, if The Purge was real then people better not be trying to give me a visit because I’m ready.
