A lot of people, like me, felt that Matthew McConaughey deserved an Oscar nomination earlier this year for his performance in Killer Joe. It looks like he’ll get a second chance this year with his performances in both Mud and the upcoming Dallas Buyer’s Club, the trailer of which can be found below.
According to this trailer, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane is “finally” going to give horror fans “what they’ve been asking for.”
So, I guess the question now is — what exactly have we been asking for? Myself, I know that I just want a genuinely scary film that features interesting (and occasionally, even intelligent) characters and is intense enough to be get under my skin without descending to the level of torture porn. I also know that I’ve been asking for more films that are not a part of the whole found footage genre. Also, as far as slasher movies are concerned, I prefer female characters who fight back as opposed to just running and screaming.
If All The Boys Love Mandy Lane can deliver on that, then it’ll definitely be what I’m waiting for. It’s a little hard to tell from the trailer. However, this has been a year of good horror films and therefore, I’m going to take a chance on All The Boys Love Mandy Lane and hope for the best.
So, when I saw You’re Next last weekend, I also saw the second trailer for Machete Kills.
The audience I saw seemed to be really excited about the trailer but I have to say that, after seeing it, I’m actually a bit worried about Machete Kills. The first Machete was a parody of grindhouse filmmaking but it was an affectionate parody. As over-the-top as it was, it still felt like it could have also been a genuine grindhouse film.
This trailer for Machete Kills, however, feels like the exact opposite. Instead of celebrating the excesses of the grindhouse, this trailer feels more like it’s inviting us to mock the films to which it claims to be paying homage.
This trailer almost feels like it’s for a film that was made by somebody who has never seen an actual grindhouse film but who has seen plenty of YouTube videos.
Hopefully, I’ll be proven wrong.
This trailer has been around for a little while but, seeing as how I’m really looking forward to seeing this film, I figured I’d go ahead and share it here on the site.
Inside Llewyn Davis is directed by the Coen Brothers and it stars Oscar Isaac! Seriously, what else can you ask for?
Titanfall is really turning out to be one of my most-anticipated game titles of 2013.
It’s the very first title for Respawn Entertainment. A studio made up of the people who first created the Call of Duty studio, Infinity Ward, and who ended up being fired (or leaving to follow their fired leaders) by the powers-that-be who held sway over Activision. There was talk about whether Respawn Entertainment would ever get a chance to show Activision and it’s detractors that they still had what it takes to succeed in the first-person shooter market dominated by three titles (Call of Duty, Battlefield and Halo).
Titanfall looks to dispel such notions first with a triumphant return to this summer’s E3 where they revealed the title to everyone to much acclaim. Now we got to see more of the gameplay itself both in mechanics and graphics at this past week’s Gamescom 2013 over at Cologne, Germany.
The gameplay trailer pretty much dispelled whatever doubts I might have had about this title and now has my money ready to be exchanged for it when it comes out for the Xbox One (for some on the PC or Xbox 360) in early 2014.
I am as shocked as anyone to admit that I’m really looking forward to seeing a movie about a man who is addicted to online pornography. However, in the case of Don John, it helps that the addict is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who also makes his directorial debut with this film). Add to that, how can you not be excited about seeing Robin and the Black Widow fall in love on the big screen?
Directed by actor John Turturro, Fading Gigolo has recently been getting a lot of buzz. Some people have even speculated that it might get Woody Allen an acting nomination to go along with all of the probable nominations for Blue Jasmine. All I know is that Fading Gigolo sounds like a bit of an over descriptive title.
The race for Awards Season film releases has begun to heat up with trailers for American Hustle and The Butler already showing some major front-runners for the major awards at the end of the year.
We now have another trailer release for a film that looks to join in on all the end of the year awards scramble. It’s the latest film from George Clooney (doing a trifect as writer, director and actor) which sports an impressive ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin and Bob Balaban.
The Monuments Men is based on the true story of archivers, museum directors, art restorers turned soldiers tasked with saving the cultural and fine arts treasures stolen by Hitler’s Nazi forces during World War II. As the war begins to turn again the Nazi’s this group of unconventional soldiers must prevent these treasures from being destroyed as part of Hitler’s “scorched earth” policy when it comes to the cultures he has deemed unworthy.
The film itself is adapted from the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel. There’s a camp out there who doesn’t look at Clooney’s work as anything but OScar-bait whenever they come around every other year, but there’s no denying that the man can direct and act. The question now is whether The Monuments Men will finally give Clooney that final push into getting his first Best Director Oscar.
The Monuments Men is set for a December 18, 2013 release date.
The second film of Marvel’s Phase 2 for it’s Cinematic Universe comes in the form of Thor: The Dark World. I’m sure the title should give as to which of the Avengers character is front and center for this Phase 2 film.
Above is the official theatrical poster for the film which has a strong fantasy, Drew Struzan feel to it. That’s more than appropriate since Thor bridges the gap between the more grounded superheroics of Midgard’s (that’s Earth to the layman) heroes (Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Iron Man) and the more fantasy and scifi denizens of Asgard like Thor and the upcoming film, Guardians of the Galaxy.
While this latest trailer released by Marvel is not the footage that was shown to Hall H attendees during Marvel’s panel at this year’s Comic-Con, it still manages to show some new footage in addition to one’s already shown at the initial teaser earlier. For one, it has more Loki (which is smart of Marvel since Loki has become this Cinematic Universe’s resident bad boy everyone seems to love or hate to love.) and it also shows some hints at the darker, grittier look that Alan Taylor looks to bring from his time as director of episodes of Game of Thrones for HBO.
Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster still seems to come off as not belonging to this ensemble, but there’s still chance that the finished product will flesh her out and her relationship with Thor to everyone’s satisfaction.
Thor: The Dark World is set for a November 8, 2013 release date.
So, I was recently talking to someone on twitter and he essentially said, “Nice blog but enough with Sharknado.” I have to say that I agreed with him. We do have a pretty nice blog here and Sharknado has been the overhyped, overrated film of 2013.
What’s distressing is that a lot of people think that Sharknado is the epitome of a good, silly SyFy film. By SyFy standards, Sharknado was nothing special. Certainly, it could in no way compare to previous SyFy films like 2-headed Shark Attack, End of the World and Flying Monkeys. The only thing that set Sharknado apart was the fact that it was watched by a bunch of celebs who proceeded to tweet some the lamest film commentary ever seen on twitter.
Myself, I’m much more looking forward to August 22nd of this year. That’s the day that Ghost Shark will premiere on SyFy. Not only was Ghost Shark directed by the great Griff Furst (director of such classic SyFy films as Arachnoquake and Swamp Shark) but, judging from the trailer below, Ghost Shark appears to deliver exactly what it promises: a shark that’s also ghost which eats a lot of fat people.
What more could you possibly need?
