Is Gordon Cole having another one of his Monica Bellucci dreams?
Well, we can always hope. However, the upcoming film Spider In The Web appears to be an espionage thriller that has little do with the Black Lodge or JUDY. Instead, it features Ben Kingsley as an aging spy who is apparently seeking some sort of redemption. To be honest, I’m not sure what this is about but Ben Kingsley’s a good actor who really doesn’t get as as many decent roles as he deserves.
This one is coming out on August 30th, in select theaters and VOD.
In case you were wondering what SyFY was going to do now that the Sharknado franchise has concluded …. well, here’s your answer!
Zombie Tidal Wave features underwater zombies, just like one of my favorite horror movies, Shock Waves. Shock Waves was a rather disturbing film, the type of thing that inspires nightmares. Zombie Tidal Wave looks like it might be a little bit more light-hearted.
Okay, so apparently, some people find the just-released trailer for Cats to be kinda creepy.
Speaking for myself, the trailer pretty much looks like what I would expect a film version of Cats to look like. I mean, the entire point of the stage production is that everyone dresses up like a cat and sings their heart out! The cat costumes and the makeup are a part of the production so I don’t know what everyone’s complaining about….
Well, okay, I will admit that I cringed when Rebel Wilson showed up but that’s just because it was so inevitable that Rebel Wilson would be in this movie. She’s like the female version of James Corden and …. oh wait, he’s in the film too?
Listen, I’m going to say it right now. Cats is going to be great. Well, maybe not great but it’s definitely going to be something that you’re going to want to be able to tell your children that you witnessed firsthand. A friend of mine hasn’t done shrooms in like ten years but he’s planning on indulging for one night only, the night that he sees this film. That’s type of cultural phenomena that Cats has the potential to be! (That said, he won’t be seeing the movie with me because I don’t want to be around if he has a bad trip. I’m never really sure what my exact obligation is in a situation like that.) Some people are going to hate this film but I like the whole idea of the film encouraging people to believe in something more than just pure cynicism, I just wish the film starred actual cats.
Anyway, here’s the trailer. Taylor Swift’s in it so you know the movie’s going to be a financial success no matter what the critics say.
With the exception of the Marvel films, franchises have struggled to live up to box office expectations during 2019. Even Toy Story 4 is considered to have had a “soft” opening.
Here’s the final trailer, which was released earlier today. If nothing else, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are two action stars with a similar appreciation for the absurd and it’s hard to imagine not having at least a little bit of fun watching them play off of each other for two hours or so.
So, believe it or not, we’ve got a teaser for the next James Bond film.
Yes, even though the film itself is still being filmed, we have a teaser. It’s not much of a teaser, to be honest. Mostly, it’s a behind-the-scenes sort of thing. So, if you had any doubt as to whether or not the production team was actually filming in Jamaica, now you know that they are. Daniel Craig, Jeffrey Wright, Rami Malek, and a few others are briefly glimpsed.
Again, it’s not much of a teaser but I guess it was felt that something had to be done to combat the bad buzz that this film has been dealing with ever since Danny Boyle left the project. It’s as if this teaser was specifically shot to say, “Yes, this is a real movie and no, Daniel Craig isn’t miserable and pissed off about playing the role again.”
I’ve seen some online speculation that Rami Malek is going to be playing Dr. No. I sincerely hope not. There’s no need to remake the old Bond films. They’re still a lot of fun. Plus, I still haven’t gotten over how they ruined Blofeld in SPECTRE.
Apparently, this is going to be Craig’s last outing as Bond. I have no problem with that. Craig’s a good actor but he’s always been a bit bland in the role. At heart, Craig’s a character actor (just check out Lucky Logan if you want to see Craig at his best) and Bond needs to played by a star.
It seems like we’ve been hearing about Ad Astra forever.
Well, it actually hasn’t been forever. Director James Gray first announced that he would be going into production on Ad Astra in 2016. The film was shot in 2017. It was originally scheduled to be released in 2018 but then the date kept getting pushed back until, eventually, it was announced that the film would be released in January of 2019.
And we were all like, “Oh, January. It must be really bad, then.”
But then the movie was pushed back again, to May.
And we were all like, “Oh, May. It must not be terrible but it’s probably not particularly memorable.”
But then it was moved back again, to September.
And we were all like, “September? Isn’t that when the Oscar movies start to come out?”
So, who knows what to expect? Here’s what we do know: James Gray has directed some good movies (The Lost City of Z) along with some frustratingly uneven ones (We Are The Night). Ad Astra stars Brad Pitt as an astronaut who goes into space in search of his father (Tommy Lee Jones). With Gray directing, one can imagine that there’s probably a bit more to the story than just a father/son reunion. Apparently, Pitt is also going to discover a secret that threaten humanity’s existence. Gary has also said that he wanted to the film’s depiction of space travel to be 100% realistic.
So …. again, we’ll see. When a movie’s release date gets shuffled around as much as Ad Astra‘s, it hard not to be a little skeptical. But the talent involved is impressive enough that I’m definitely going to give the movie a chance.
The Kitchen, which will be coming out in August, is one of those films about which I am cautiously optimistic.
It’s about three women in 1970s New York. Each one is married to a member of the Irish mafia. When their husbands all end up getting arrested by the FBI, the women take control of the rackets themselves. This, of course, brings them into conflict with the old and patriarchal Italian mob.
It is it a comedy? Well, it does star TIffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy as two of the of the wives. However, though they both may be thought of as being primarily comedic actresses, Haddish is a critical favorite right now and McCarthy has two Oscar nominations despite the fact that she’s appeared in some truly terrible movies over the past few years. Both of them have proven that they can handle drama just as well as comedy.
So, is this a drama? Well, as you can see in the trailer below, it does appear to feature Elisabeth Moss falling in love with violence. In fact, the trailer features a few people getting killed but it also appears to take a rather jaunty approach to all the death. “Oh look! He’s sitting on the toilet and he got shot!”
So, I’m going to guess that this film is going to try to balance both comedy and drama. That approach, when it works, can lead to wonderful things. And when it doesn’t work …. well, let’s not even think about it.
I will say this — the trailer’s glimpse of 42nd Street is gorgeous!
Anyway, here’s the trailer for Widows …. I mean, The Kitchen:
Netflix has a Dark Crystal series that will be dropping on August 30th, 2019. The series will be ten episodes long and will apparently explore the world of the original film. The theme appears to be one of rebellion. Then again, rebellion appears to be the theme of everything nowadays. Even the authority figures say that they’re rebelling against something. I guess it truly is …. THE AGE OF RESISTANCE!
Anyway, someone will undoubtedly review this show for the site so hopefully, it’ll be good. Or, at the very least, it’ll be better than the second season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Seriously, we deserve a Carribbean cruise after making it through that.
Here’s the Dark Crystal trailer! I hope you’ll trip like I do while watching it.
(Someone out there will get the joke and that’s all that matters.)
So, today, twitter is all abuzz over the trailer for the upcoming Rambo film. Apparently this film, which is called Rambo: Last Blood, will be the final time that Sylvester Stallone will ever play John Rambo and it features Rambo coming home and fighting a Mexican drug cartel.
Look, to be honest, this trailer pretty much looks like a typical Sylvester Stallone trailer. It could just as easily be the trailer for another Expendables film, except for the fact that Rambo has become an iconic figure in the annals of cinematic mayhem. Just the mere mention of the name gets certain filmgoers excited.
This trailer also features Old Town Road because God knows it’s not like that song is currently overplayed or anything.
There’s one thing that I do think we definitely have to give Sylvester Stallone credit for. I’ve read that, during the first part of his stardom, Stallone wasn’t always pleasant to work with and that he sometimes resented being thought of as just being an action star. But, during the twilight of his career, it would appear that Stallone has definitely made a sort of peace with the roles that define him. He understands what he does well and he tries to give his audience what they came for. I’m predicting that, when Stallone’s 90 years old, he’ll probably still be making movies where he beats up terrorists. By this point, of course, the terrorists might be attacking a retirement home but Stallone’s going to be there to put them in their place.
I’m having a lot of mixed feelings right now, everyone.
Last night, my DVR overheated and I not only burned my thumb unplugging it but I’ve also probably lost the 265 things that I had recorded on there, including every episode of Twin Peaks: The Return. I called our provider about it and they are sending over a new DVR, which should arrive in two days. Personally, I was hoping they would say, “We’ll get someone out to your house immediately” but no.
So, that really sucks. However, as annoyed as I am by all that, I’m still happy because we have a new trailer for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and it looks really, really good! As I sit here writing this, I’m waiting to here what type of reception the film got when it premiered on Cannes today. For now, though, enjoy the new trailer! Tarantino has said that the film takes place over three separate days in Hollywood and the trailer features Leonardo DiCaprio (as Rick Dalton) returning to Hollywood, Brad Pitt (as Dalton’s stunt double) apparently meeting the Manson Family, and Margot Robbie (as Sharon Tate) watching herself in the Wrecking Crew. Among the huge supporting cast, Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Margaret Qualley, and Al Pacino are specifically highlighted.
How exactly Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which is being advertised as being a bit of a swinging comedy, will deal with the horrific reality of Charles Manson is something that I’ve been wondering around ever since the project was first announced. Is Brad Pitt maybe going to kill him, just as Eli Roth killed Hitler at the end of Inglourious Basterds? We’ll find out soon!
