Lisa’s Week In Review: 1/1/18 — 1/7/18

What’s This?

Hi there!  Welcome to Lisa’s Week In Review.  This year, on Monday, I’m going to post everything that I watched, read, and listened to during the previous week.  Since I love to make lists, I’m hoping that this will encourage me to see more, read more, and listen to more this year than I did last year!

I’m happy that 2017 started on Monday, which is also the start of the week.  I like it when things are neat and orderly like that.  For the first three days of 2018, the temperatures in DFW were below freezing though, unlike the rest of the country, we didn’t get any snow or ice.  Around Wednesday, the temperature got up above 32 degrees and the last few days have actually been wonderfully pleasant.  Of course, I spent most of the week lying on the couch with a cold.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s my week in review!

Books I Read

(I’m ashamed to say that, over the course of last week, I watched over 60 different movies and TV shows but I only read two books.  This will change in the future.)

  1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (1953) — I found a copy of this at Half-Price Books last week.  The copy that I found once belonged to a student named Ashley and she filled the margins with notes about her friends Taylor and Sidney.  At the start of the book, they were best friends.  About halfway through, she suddenly hated both of them but, by the end of the book, they were friends again.  Yay!
  2. You’re Ok, Your Cat’s Ok: How to Establish A Meaningful Relationship With Your Cat by Marcus Schenk and Jill Caravan (1992) — This book is full of helpful hints on how to get along with your cat.  Of course, it’s also full of pictures of cute kitties, which is the main reason we own it.

Music I Listened To

  1. Amy Winehouse
  2. Anders Nilsen
  3. Armin van Buuren
  4. Avicii
  5. Big Data

From All The Cats And Humans At The Shattered Lens, We Hope You Have You Had A Wonderful Holiday!

“Merry Christmas, movie house!”

“And happy New Year to you … in jail!”

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus….”

“Now wait a minute, Susie. Just because every child can’t get his wish that doesn’t mean there isn’t a Santa Claus.”

“You must believe in Mr. Kringle and keep right on doing it. You must have faith in him.”

“Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs…”

“How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?”

From all of your friends at the Shattered Lens, we hope that you have had a happy holiday and we look forward to sharing more with you in the year to come!

Merry Christmas from the Folks of Through the Shattered Lens

TreevengeIt’s a yearly tradition to celebrate the birth of this particular site by reintroducing it’s readers (introducing those new to the site) to the greatest film ever made. It’s the greatest Christmas film and the greatest feel good film. In the end, it’s just the greatest film ever made and anyone who thinks otherwise is just misguided and wrong.

Treevenge has everything one should ever want and probably didn’t even know they needed or wanted. It has romance. Nostalgia for those who fondly remember getting to choose their first Christmas tree. It’s a family film where we see families celebrate the traditions of the holidays.

It even has moments of scandalous scenes that may make one go “OH MY!”. I know that many of the original contributors past and present look forward to this yearly TSL tradition. I may not have been as active this year as I have been year’s past, but this was one day I wouldn’t missed for all the world.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, ONE AND ALL!

Lisa’s Editorial Corner: 10 Things For Which I Am Thankful In 2017

Well, it’s that time.

Every Thanksgiving, I come up with an even-numbered list of things for which I’m thankful.  I know some people are saying that we shouldn’t be thankful for anything this year.  These are the people who say that, because they’re miserable, it’s somehow offensive that everyone else isn’t miserable.

But you know what?

Fuck that.

No one tells me what to believe or whether or not I can celebrate a holiday.  That freedom is something that I’m very thankful for!  Here’s a few more things that I’ve been thankful for this year:

  1. I’m thankful for this site.  Arleigh Sandoc founded Through the Shattered Lens in December of 2009 and, about four months later, I posted my very first review on this site.  A lot has changed since that first review.  New contributors have added their own unique perspectives to this site and I’d like to think that, on a personal level, I’ve grown as a writer since I wrote that first review.  But one thing that has always remained consistent is just how much I love doing this.  I’ve posted over 4,000 posts on Through the Shattered Lens and I’ve had a blast writing every one of them!

2. I’m thankful for our readers.  Seriously, you are the ones who make all of this worthwhile.  We currently have somewhere around 28,000 subscribers and to each and every one of you, I say, “Thank you.”  Thank you for reading and thank you for commenting.  Just as I hope I’ve introduced some of you to some new movies, quite a few of you have also inspired me to take a second and third look at some of the films I’ve reviewed.

3. I’m thankful for all of the brave women (and men) who have shared their stories in an effort to make this world a safer place.

4. I’m thankful that this was the year of Twin Peaks.  On this site, starting with the original series and extending all the way through the end of the Showtime revival, we shared our thoughts on everything Twin Peaks this year.  Years from now, we’ll still be debating why Laura screamed.

5. I’m thankful that this has been a great year for genre films.  While so many of the year’s “prestige” films fell flat, 2017 will always be remembered as the year of War of the Planet of Apes, Wonder Woman, The Lego Batman Movie, Beauty and the Beast, Split Kong: Skull Island, Get Out, It, Spider-Man, The Big Sick, Logan, and Thor: Ragnorak.

6. I’m thankful for networks like TCM, which introduce classic movies to new viewers.

7. I’m thankful for my friends in the Late Night Movie Gang.  Every Saturday night, we watch a movie.  Sometimes the movie is bad and sometimes, the movie is really bad.  But we always have a blast.

8. I’m thankful that, in just another few weeks, I’ll be able to see The Disaster Artist.

9. I’m thankful for the artists who, in this time of rampant conformity, are still fighting to maintain their own unique and individual vision.

10. I’m thankful for Chinese food.  Seriously, who doesn’t love Chinese food?

Happy thanksgiving!

Finally, you may rest in peace

Here’s Looking at You On The Big Screen, CASABLANCA!

gary loggins's avatarcracked rear viewer

Longtime readers of this blog know CASABLANCA is my all-time favorite film. It’s blend of stars, supporting cast, script, direction, drama, romance, and humor is the perfect example of 1940’s Hollywood storytelling,  when Tinseltown was at the peak of its moviemaking powers . I’ve seen the film at least 80 times in many different formats, from broadcast television to cable and satellite, from VHS to DVD to DVR, but never before on the big screen – until this past Sunday, that is!

Fathom Events, in conjunction with TCM, presents classic films on a monthly basis in theaters across the country. In my area, they’re shown at Regal Cinemas in Swansea, MA, a half hour drive down the highway. I’ve been tempted to make the trip a few times, but never got around to it for one reason or another. But when I heard CASABLANCA was this month’s feature, I knew…

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HOUSTON ASTROS: 2017 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HOUSTON ASTROS, THE 2017 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!

It wasn’t always an easy journey.  When the Astros made the switch from the National League to the American League, it was not always a smooth transition.  But this season, the Astros have again and again proved themselves to be the best team in the American League.

And tonight, they are the best team in major league baseball.

It took them seven games to win.  The Los Angeles Dodgers proved to be a tough and worthy opponent.  Of all the World Series that I have watched, this has been one of the most exciting and unpredictable  When the Astros lost Game 6 on Halloween, no one gave them much of chance to win Game 7.  They were playing in Los Angeles and everyone said that the Dodgers couldn’t be beaten at home.

Tonight, the Astros did the same thing that they did during the regular season.  They played good baseball and the proved the doubters wrong.  Tonight, the Astros won their first World Series.  For the first time, the World Series has been won by a team from Texas.

Just as people underestimated the Astros this year, people have also underestimated Houston.  When Hurricane Harvey flooded the city, it was said that Houston and the people who lived there would never recover.  Just like the Astros, both Houston and Texas are proving the doubters wrong.

Congratulations to the Houston Astros!  Tonight, the Astros showed the world what it means to be Houston Strong!
