So, earlier today, I saw a movie called For Greater Glory. Before the movie started, I sat through the usual trailers — Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, Lawless, and that really annoying one for that movie where Adam Sandler sounds like he’s got a frog in his throat. However, they also showed something I hadn’t seen before, the trailer for the upcoming horror film The Possession. It’s rarely a good sign when a horror movie is rated PG-13 and I get the feeling all of the film’s good moments have been put in the trailer. However, I’ll probably still end up seeing The Possession when it comes out. For whatever reason, I just can’t resist a blatant Exorcist rip-off.

Trailer: Les Misérables (Teaser)
The moment I saw the news feed that one of my most anticipated films of 2012 finally has an official teaser trailer out I knew that my expectations would only grow with each viewing.
Tom Hooper doesn’t go for small in following up his Academy Award-winning directing work in The King’s Speech by adapting the hugely popular and beloved stage musical Les Misérables which in itself was adapted from the classic Victor Hugo novel of the same name. The cast stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in the roles of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert. Anne Hathaway comes away with the role of the tragic Fantine with Amanda Seyfried taking on the role of Fantine’s grown-up daughter Cosette. In what could be a star-making turn, Samantha Barks gets the coveted role of Eponine which was the same role she played as part of the musical’s 25th Anniversary Concert.
Details about this film musical has been scarce, but it’s already been reported that every actor in the cast does their own singing and done so live in front of the camera. This stylistic choice may keep some of the songs from reaching epic levels, but should do well in better conveying the emotional impact for some of the more personal character songs in the musical. In fact, the song that Anne Hathaway sings in the trailer, “I Dreamed A Dream”, is one of those character songs that seem to sound much better with it being less is more style.
Les Misérables is set for a December 14, 2012 release date.
Trailer: The Apparition
I saw this trailer last night when I went to see Chernobyl Diaries. I don’t know, I thought it looked good. (Of course, I’m somewhat notorious for getting fooled by vaguely effective trailers for bad horror movies…)
Trailer: Maniac (Red Band)
Last November I posted news about plans to remake William Lustig’s classic grindhouse slasher flick, Maniac, and how the most unexpected choice of Elijah Wood for the role of the serial killer Frank.
The film had it’s premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and the response to the film by filmmaker Frank Khalfoun seem to be positive. Horror remakes have always been hit-or-miss. If such positive reactions are to be believed then 2012’s Maniac may just be the horror hit of the year.
The film hasn’t been picked up by a North American distributor so any sort of release date for the US is still up in the air. Until then enjoy the first trailer of the film and a good red band trailer to boot.
Trailer: Magic Mike
So, Jeff and I went and saw Chernobyl Diaries tonight and, to be honest, the film was pretty bleh but I was happy because I got to see the trailer for Magic Mike on the big screen. My boyfriend feels that my enthusiastic reaction to this trailer has more to do with Channing Tatum stripping than the film itself and maybe he’s right. Then again, it’s also possible that the entire film is just Channing Tatum stripping and that would be even better.
Teaser Trailer: The Master
This was released about a week ago. It’s the first teaser trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film, The Master. Essentially, Joaquin Phoenix acts a lot like Joaquin Phoenix while an unseen Phillip Seymour Hoffman interrogates him. I have to say that after seeing this teaser I am intrigued about The Master. It just has such a wonderfully obscure and enigmatic feel to it. It may just be the beach and the ominous atmosphere of the whole thing but this teaser reminds me a lot of Lost.
Though, just going by the rumors that I’ve read online, The Master is more concerned with exposing Scientology than revealing the Dharma Initiative.
Trailer: Lawless
This trailer has been out for a while now but I still want to post it here because, I have to admit, I have slowly fallen in love with it. Lawless appears to be a stylish period piece about ruthless men shooting each other and, quite frankly, after sitting through such ponderous and overly serious films as Public Enemies and J. Edgar, I think we’re all in the mood for a prohibition gangster film that’s actually fun to watch.
There are three reasons why I think Lawless might be good and those three reasons are: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Guy Pearce (though I do have to wonder what exactly is going on with Pearce’s hair). Seriously, this trailer had me as soon as Oldman flashed that little smirk of his. As for Tom Hardy — well, I’m with Jessica Chastain on this one. I’d dance for him too.
There are a few reasons to be concerned. Director John Hillcoat previously directed The Road, which I didn’t really care for. (The end of the world might be many things but it should never be boring.) However, my biggest concern is the fact that even though the film features Hardy, Oldman, Pearce, and Chastain, it apparently stars Shia LeBouf. When I saw Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, I had to keep reminding myself that the film was actually about LeBouf because he just seemed so forgettable and watching the trailer for Lawless, I find myself wondering how, if LeBouf couldn’t even summon up enough charisma to hold the screen against Michael Douglas, how is he going to handle being in a film with Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, and Gary Oldman?
Trailer: The Great Gatsby
Here is the trailer for the film that many people are predicting will be the major Oscar contender later this year, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (in 3D, as all films are nowadays). I’m not totally sold on the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby (it seems like such a predictable and safe choice, to be honest) but I think Carey Mulligan is a great choice for Daisy and Tobey Magurie was born to play Nick Carraway. Judging from the trailer, this film is either going to be brilliant or it’s going to be a huge mess. Speaking as someone who loves F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel and who has often wished that her own voice might sound like money, I’m hoping it will be brilliant.
Trailer: Skyfall (dir. by Sam Mendes)
We finally get the return of Britain’s deadliest and world-renowend “Double-O” agent with Sam Mendes’ Skyfall.
It’s been quite a long time since Marc Foster’s underwhelming Quantum of Solace with MGM’s subsequent bankruptcy being one of the major causes for the delay of this film being made. With the MGM bit now out of the way James Bond finally returns to the big screen with Daniel Craig once again donning the Walther and the tuxedo to play the debonair and ruthless killer agent that Ian Fleming made famous through his spy novels.
This teaser doesn’t show much other than some bits of action (one of which looks like it might’ve been lifted out of a level of Modern Warfare 3) and Bond being coldly ominous about people coming to get him and “M”. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Bond films and even when they don’t go over so well I still enjoy myself. They also tend to have a different director with each and every film which gives each film a different take on the character of Bond. This time around we have Sam Mendes in the director’s chair and it’ll be interesting to see how well he handles the thriller genre and action.
Skyfall is set for an October 26, 2012 release date.
Trailer: Darksiders II – Death Strikes (Part Two)
Darksiders II: Death Strikes (Part One)
The second part of THQ and Vigil Games’ short-film trailer to introduce the character of Death for their sequel to 2010’s Darksiders has now come out and it shows the Pale Horseman of the Apocalypse taking on even more demons and an enormous angelic engine of destruction. We don’t hear Death speak (his voice will be veteran genre actor Michael Wincott), but we do see him in action taking on demons and then finally transforming into his more recognizable Grim Reaper aspect to take on the battle engine.
If there was a game I’m really waiting to get my hands on this summer it will be this game and hopefully the delay of releasing the game on June 26, 2012 to a later date of August 14, 2012 means more polishing and tweaking of the final product before it comes out to the public. Here’s to hoping that when it finally comes out it will not be buggy and be as good or better than the game that preceded it.
