Artist Profile: Gabriel Mayorga (1911 — 1988)

Born in Colombia, Gabriel Mayorga came to America at the age of 15, following the death of his father. The Mayorgas settled in New York City, where Gabriel studied at both the Art Students League and the Grand Central School of Art. Gabriel found success as both a cover artist for the Spanish magazine Estrellas and several sci-fi pulp magazines. Gabriel Mayorga became an American citizen in 1943 and, in 1950, moved to Greenwich Village and made a name for himself as both a painter and a teacher.

The Thrilling Covers of Thrilling Wonder Stories

Thrilling Wonder Stories was a pulp magazine that was published from 1936 to 1955. It was one of several pulp magazines that had the word “thrilling” in its title. The stories were mostly science fiction and I guess they were meant to be more thrilling than all of the other science fiction that was being published at the same time. The stories were apparently thrilling enough for the magazine to run for 19 years.
