The Eric Roberts Collection: Depth Charge (dir by Terrence O’Hara)


It’s Die Hard On A Submarine in 2008’s Depth Charge!

Dying of a brain tumor and passed over for a promotion (and wow, you thought your week sucked), Commander Krieg (Eric Roberts) and a band of mercenaries take over a nuclear submarine.  They force off all of the actual crew of the sub but they somehow miss the doctor (Jason Gedrick) and an electrician (Chris Warren).  The mad commander announces that unless he is sent a certain amount of money, he will launch the nuclear missiles.  While the President (Barry Bostwick) dithers and an admiral (Corbin Bernsen) searches for the sub, the doctor and the electrician beat up mercenaries and work their way to the bridge.

“Get off my boat!” Gedrick growls several times.

Yeah, dude, we get it.  Air Force One.  Good movie.

This on the other hand …. well, let’s be positive here.  This movie provides Eric Roberts with a substantial role and he does a good job as the villain, even if his motives never quite make sense.  (He’s got a year to live so what exactly would he have done with a promotion or any of that money that he’s demanding?)  But this movie asks us to believe that a bunch of mercenaries could not only sneak onto a submarine but also defeat almost the entire crew without a single bit of trouble.  And then for submarine’s doctor to just happen to turn out to be a former boxer or UFC fighter or whatever he’s supposed to be (“He was a fighter,” a presidential aide explains) is just a bit too much of a coincidence.

That said, you get Eric Roberts, Corbin Bernsen, and Barry Bostwick, all in the same movie.  All three of them deserve better but at least they all gave it their best here!

The Eric Roberts Collection: Raptor (dir by Jim Wynorski)


In 2001’s Raptor, Eric Roberts stars as Jim Tanner, the sheriff of a small desert town.  When the locals start turning up all shredded to heck, Sheriff Tanner suspects that maybe it was an animal attack.  When the sheriff’s daughter (Lorissa McComas) witnesses one of the attacks and goes into a coma as a result, Tanner is determined to get justice, even if it means working with his ex-girlfriend, Barbara (Melissa Brasselle).

It turns out that it’s neither coyotes nor bears that are attacking the folks in the desert.  Instead, it’s a bunch of dinosaurs that have been brought back into existence by Dr. Hyde (Corbin Bernsen, wearing a beret), a mad scientist who has a laboratory in a secret government installation.  When the army realizes that there’s a bunch of mini-dinosaurs roaming the desert, they send in a special taskforce to take care of the problem.

It’s a pretty simple movie and no one in the cast, Roberts included, really seems to be taking it all that seriously.  There a few scenes where Corbin Bernsen looks like he’s about to break out laughing at some of his dialogue.  Director Jim Wynorski keeps the action moving and tosses in plenty of blood and a little nudity.  If you’ve ever seen any of the other films that Wynorski directed for producer Roger Corman, you’ll know what to expect from Raptor.

The dinosaurs are cute.  They’re all obviously puppets and there’s a lot of scenes of them moving quickly through the desert with an intense look in their eyes.  Apparently, almost all of the dinosaur footage was lifted from the first three Carnosaur films, which perhaps explains why the film suddenly goes from being about Sheriff Tanner trying to protect his town from the dinosaurs to being about a bunch of soldiers hunting for the dinosaurs in Dr. Hyde’s underground lab.  It’s cheap but it’s kind of fun, a timewaster that no one should take seriously.

I Watched Major League: Back To The Minors (1998, Dir. by John Warren)


Roger Dorn (Corbin Bernsen), the former third baseman for the Cleveland Indians, is the new owner of the Minnesota Twins.  There’s a hotshot hitter playing for the Buzz, the Twins’s Minor League affiliate.  Downtown Anderson (Walton Goggin) can hit the ball over the fences but he still needs to learn about teamwork before he’ll be ready to move up to the majors.  Roger recruits an old friend, an aging pitcher named Gus Cantrell (Scott Bakula), to manage the Buzz and mentor Downtown.  Under Gus’s leadership, the Buzz starts winning games.  Even some former Indians, like Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) and Taka Tanaka (Takaaki Ishibashi), are recruited to play for the Buzz.  When the manager of the Twins, Leonard Huff (Ted McGinley), insults Gus and the Buzz over dinner, Gus challenges the Twins to an exhibition game, the minors against the majors.  Huff accepts the challenge.

I had always heard that Major League: Back To The Minors was the worst of three Major League films but I liked it.  It wasn’t as good as the first one but it wasn’t as boring as the second one.  A lot of it has to do with the cast, who give it their all.  Walton Goggins is great as the cocky Downtown Anderson but really, all of the actors playing entire team did a good job.  They’re all misfits, of course.  I especially liked Doc (Peter Mackenzie), a medical student-turned-pitcher who has the slowest fastball in the game.  This movie had a little of the warmth and insider humor that made the first Major League film so special.  It’s an underdog story, with the minor league players proving that they’re just as good as the spoiled players in the big leagues.

I didn’t find the idea of an exhibition game between the Twins and the Buzz to be believable.  In the movie, they actually play two games against each other and they both take place during the regular season.  When did they find the time to play each other?  I guess they gave up one of their travel days but it still doesn’t seem like something that would happen.

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would.  It helped that I love baseball.  And I love the minor leagues, even if they don’t get the same respect as the majors.  Some of the best baseball I’ve ever seen has been in minor league games.  They may not have the huge contracts but they’ve got the talent, they’ve got something to prove, and they’ve got the love of the game.

Film Review: Lay The Favorite (dir by Stephen Frears)


2012’s Lay the Favorite is a movie about gambling.

Rebecca Hall stars as Beth Raymer, a dancer in Florida who makes her money by giving private shows and lap dances to paying customers.  Bored and disillusioned with her life, she follows the advice of her father (Corbin Bernsen) and decides to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a Las Vegas cocktail waitress.

(Really, that’s your dream?  I mean, my mom occasionally worked as a waitress because she was essentially taking care of four girls by herself and she needed the extra money but it was hardly a lifelong dream.)

Vegas is a union town, which means that Beth can’t just walk in and start serving drinks.  Instead, she gets a job working with Dink Heimowitz (Bruce Willis), a big-time gambler who hires other people to place bets for him.  Dink is surprisingly nice for a professional gambler and it’s not long before Beth finds herself falling for him.  Dink’s wife, Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones), is not happy about that.  Tulip need not worry about Beth eventually ends up falling in love with a journalist named Jeremy (Joshua Jackson) and the two of them quickly become one of the most boring couples that I’ve ever seen in my life.  Eventually, Tulip does demand that Dink fire Beth and Beth ends up in New York, working for a decadent gambler named Rosy (Vince Vaughn).  Uh-oh — bookmaking’s illegal in New York!

Rebecca Hall is one of those performers who tends to act with a capitol A.  There’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Hall has given some very strong and very memorable performances, in films like Vicky Christina Barcelona, Please Give, and the heart-breaking Christine.  However, when Hall is miscast — as she is in this film — her style of acting can seem overly mannered.  Hall plays Beth as being a collection of quirks and twitches and nervous mannerisms and embarrassed facial expressions and the end result is that Beth comes across not as being the endearing ditz that the film wants her to be but instead as just a very annoying and very immature human being.  It’s actually perfectly understandable why Tulip would demand that Dink fire her.  What’s less understandable is why we should care.  Myself, I wanted someone to warn Joshua Jackson because I don’t think he knew what he was getting into.

Lay The Favorite is yet another film that tries to use Las Vegas as a metaphor for American culture.  That’s not a bad idea.  David Lynch made great use of Vegas in Twin Peaks: The Return.  Martin Scorsese did the same with Casino.  However, Lay The Favorite was directed by the British Stephen Frears and, as happens so often whenever a European director tries to understand American culture, the entire film leaves you feeling as if you’re on the outside looking in.  Lynch and Scorsese, for instance, both understood that Las Vegas represents both the ultimate risk and the ultimate second chance.  If you have the courage, you can bet every asset that you have.  And if you’re lucky, you might win.  If you lose, you know you can still rebuild.  Whether it’s grounded in reality or not, it’s a very American idea.  Lay The Favorite, on the other hand, can’t see beyond the glitz of the strip and the harsh concrete reality of a nearby apartment complex.  It’s portrait of Vegas is as superficial as a tourist’s postcard.  Thematically, Lay The Favorite feels as empty and predictable as its double entendre title.

On the plus side, Bruce Willis, Vince Vaughn, and Catherine Zeta-Jones all gave better performances that the film probably deserved.  Willis, especially, gives a poignant performance as temperamental, henpecked, and good-natured Dink.  Bruce Willis spent so much time as an action star that it was often overlooked that he was a very good character actor.  Even in a bad film like this one, Willis came through.

October Positivity: Past Shadows (dir by Peter J. Eaton)


When this 2021 film started, I noticed that the only immediately familiar name in the opening credits was Corbin Bernsen, who was the third-billed member of the cast.  Bernsen’s presence in the film did not surprise me.  Bernsen has appeared in several faith-based films and he’s even directed a few.

What did surprise me was just how briefly Bernsen’s appearance actually waas.  It’s a blink-and-you’ll miss it appearance and, unless I somehow missed it, I don’t think he actually has a line of dialogue in the film.  He plays the uncle of one of the film’s main characters.  He’s an archeologist and, whenever he finds any ancient glass at the site of any of his digs, he sends it to his nephew.  The nephew eventually decides to put all that glass to good use by taping it all together and using it as the frames for his previously frameless glasses.  Suddenly, whenever he puts on the glasses, he can see the past!

That’s good because one of his professors has felt guilty ever since his grandson was kidnapped.  So now, he can just put on the glasses and see who did the abducting.  Yay!  However, another professor — a physicist — wants the glasses for himself so he drugs our hero and steals the glasses.  Luckily, everything works out in the end.  Bad professor goes to jail.  Good professor stops drinking and is reunited with his family.  And the guy with the glasses gets a recording contract in Nashville.

I guess the glasses are meant to represent faith.  And the bad scientist is meant to represent everyone who says that science is more important than faith.  I’m not sure that glasses that allow you to see into the past is the best way sell the idea of faith.  I mean, if you’re so inclined, I guess you could spend as much time as you want praying for a pair of magic glasses that will allow you to see into the past but, at some point, you’re going to have to admit that there’s no such thing as magic glasses, no matter how much you want to believe in them.  In this case, the scientist laughing at you would be proven right.

I had another thought while watching this film.  A good sound mix is really important.  If you want people to get anything out of your movie, it’s important that they be able to hear what your characters are saying.  It’s important that the characters actually sound like they’re all in the same room as opposed to just standing in a booth and reading their lines off a piece of paper.  The sound was all over the place.  Sometimes, I had to strain to hear everything.  Sometimes, I winced because the movie was too loud.  Considering how talky this film is and how often the action segues into flashback, this movie needed a much cleaner sound to it.  There’s more to making a good film than focusing the image, though this film struggled with that as well.

Anyway, the most interesting thing about this film is Corbin Bernsen showing up for 2 minutes and not saying anything.  Has Bernsen become the poor man’s Eric Roberts?

Retro Television Review: Veronica’s Video 1.1 “Pilot”


Welcome to Retro Television Reviews, a feature where we review some of our favorite and least favorite shows of the past!  On Thursdays, I will be reviewing Veronica’s Video, which was produced by UPN in 1998.  The entire show is currently streaming on YouTube!

I sacrificed my eyesight to review this show.

Episode 1.1 “Pilot”

(Dir by Don Scardino, originally aired on …. well, we’ll get to that.)

Aspiring filmmaker Gary Gluckin (Matt Champagne) needs a day job so he walks into a trashy, nearly deserted video store and tells the owner, Nick (Cobin Bernsen), that he wants to work for him.  Nick is an angry man who chain smokes and rolls around in a wheelchair because his wife ran him over while she was leaving him.  Nick is also Gary’s father.

Nick is only willing to hire on a Gary probationary basis and he explains that Gary will be competing for a full time job with Chandra (Shishir Kurup), a Sikh who is an expert on Indian films.  Gary and Nick make fun of Chandra’s ethnicity, religion, and name.  Chandra, meanwhile, enforces a strict policy of only allowing 21 year-olds into the porn section of the video store.  He kicks out a 51 year-old.  That’s the type of show this was.

Occasionally dropping by the video store is Mary Sue Henderson (Julie Benz) who works for her grandmother and who wears an Alice In Wonderland costume that Gary is constantly looking down.  Mary Sue is always bright and cheerful.  When she talks to Gary, Gary goes all mush-mouthed because Gary is a loser.  Gary also thinks that he may have seen Mary Sue’s picture on the cover of one of the porn videos that is in the store.

Nick eventually tortures Gary by forcing him to stand outside in 116-degree heat.  At one point, Greg gets beaten up by someone who is played by Greg Grunberg.  Frustrated, Gary announces that he doesn’t need the job and he’ll just move in with his mother.  Nick replies that Gary’s mother wants nothing to do with him.  Wow, what a fun comedy.

This is, without a doubt, one of the worst shows that I’ve ever watched.  This show was so bad that the pilot didn’t even get a pity showing.  UPN, which was famous for being the home for terrible and misguided shows, didn’t even want to mess with this thing.  Why is this show so bad?  The humor is not particularly funny, the laugh track in intrusive, and the video store itself is so dirty and ugly that it’s hard to believe that it has ever had a customer.  Corbin Bernsen, being a veteran actor, at least manages to suggest that there’s a heart underneath Nick’s rough exterior.  The rest of the cast is just bland.

I should also admit that I watched this on YouTube and the upload was one of the worst that I’ve ever seen.  I’m surprised I still have my eyesight after being confronted with this:

I had 20/60 eyesight when I started this show.  I’m worried about what it is now.

Anyway, needless to say, only one episode of Veronica’s Video was produced.  And that episode probably should have been left in a landfill somewhere, rather than uploaded to YouTube.

October Positivity: Prayer Never Fails (dir by Wes Miller)


The 2016 film, Prayer Never Fails, tells the story of Aiden Paul (Nick Lashaway).  Having survived a traumatic childhood that was full of abuse, Aiden is now the beloved basketball coach at the local high school.  (The fact that he never shaves or gets his hair out of his face does not seem to be a problem as far as this school district is concenred.)  When one of his players approaches Aiden and tell him that he’s being abused by his father (Lorenzo Lamas), Aiden suggests that the player pray on it.  When the player says that he doesn’t know how to pray (because his father is not just abusive but also a hardcore atheist, of course), Aiden takes him into a classroom and teaches him how.

Unfortunately, another teacher sees Aiden and the player praying and reports Aiden to the principal.  Aiden is fired from his position.  Though Aiden says that he’s just going to give up and find another job, his players demand that Aiden fight to be reinstated.  Aiden decides to take the school to court!

Unfortunately, there aren’t any lawyers that Aiden can afford.  (And most lawyers would hopefully be ethical enough tell Aiden that, regardless of his good intentions, he doesn’t have a case.)  Finally, a chance meeting at a diner leads to Aiden hiring Michael Brown (Clifton Davis), an agnostic lawyer with a gambling problem.  Michael takes the case but he soon finds himself going up against master litigator Joseph T. Harrington (Corbin Bernsen).  Can Michael somehow win the case?

This is another one of those Christian courtroom films where no one does anything that makes sense.  For instance, it seems like, instead of ducking into an open classroom for a quick prayer, Aiden could have reported that one of his students was being abused by a parent, which is something that, as a teacher, he would have been required to do in the first place.  (Instead, that subplot is abandoned after Aiden is fired.)  As well, to win the case, all Joseph T. Herrington had to do was 1) point out that Aiden had admitted to leading a prayer in school and 2) call to the stand a Constitutional law expert to explain the establishment clause.  Instead, Herrington puts the entire concept of prayer on trial and tries to argue that praying doesn’t work.  It’s an argument based purely on emotion and bias, which allows Michael to make a counter-argument that’s based purely on emotion and bias.  At one point, Michael interrogates the school’s principal as to why he was willing to defend a transgender teacher but not Aiden’s right to pray.  The correct answer, of course, is that whether or not another teacher is transgender has nothing to do with Aiden’s case and that the Supreme Court has ruled that prayer is not allowed in public schools.  That’s really all anyone needed to say to any of Michael’s arguments but no one does because, if they did, it would be a very short film.

(Along with the dubious legal arguments, this film annoyed me because Aiden didn’t ever bother to shave or comb his hair before the trail began.  I mean, seriously, did someone tell him that it was a good strategy to go to court looking like you spend the previous week sleeping in the back of a pickup truck?  I would not want him coaching my school’s basketball team.)

On the plus side, Eric Roberts is in this movie.  He plays the judge and goes through the film with a bemused smile on his face, as if even he can’t believe the legal arguments that he’s hearing.  It’s always nice to see Eric Roberts picking up a paycheck.

October Positivity: God’s Club (dir by Jared Cohn)


In the 2015 film, God’s Club, Stephen Baldwin stars as Michael Evens.

Michael is a teacher at the local high school.  His wife is also a teacher and it is quickly established that she is quite a bit more religious than her husband.  In fact, she’s the sponsor of the after-school Christian club.  This club is very controversial because God’s Club is one of those films that takes place in a community where everyone is not only an atheist but also a total jerk about it.  It’s like everyone learned how to be an atheist by watching Richard Dawkins YouTube videos.  At a school board meeting, parents shout about separation of church and state and warn that they are not going to sit by while their children are brainwashed.  Principal Max Graves (Corbin Bernsen, giving the film’s best performance as the sole voice of reason at the high school) explains that no one is being forced to attend the club.  Michael, for his part, remains quiet.  Later, as they’re driving home, Michael and his wife are in a serious accident.  Michael survives.  His wife asks him to pray with her and then promptly dies.

Weeks later, a guilt-stricken Michael returns to school.  It turns out that most of the students are just as jerky as their parents.  When Michael opens his class with a moment of silence for his dead wife, one of his students reports him for praying in class. This leads to the parents demanding that Michael be fired.  Spencer Rivers (played by Lorenzo Lamas) is especially adamant that Michael should not be allowed to teach and he even goes so far as to insult the memory of Michael’s dead wife.  Making things even more tense is Michael’s decision to restart God’s Club himself.  Needless to say, this leads to even more controversy but it also gives Michael a chance to make peace with both himself and his guilt over his wife’s death.

Christian teachers being persecuted by atheist parents and mindless government enforcers is a recurring theme when it comes to faith-based films.  Perhaps the best-known example of this is God’s Not Dead 2, in which Ray Wise literally cackles with delight as he thinks about ruining Melissa Joan Hart’s life.  (“We are going to prove that God is dead,” Wise explains to his legal team, none of whom point out that it would be smarter to just settle the case and move on.)  The debate over whether or not religion should be allowed in schools is a legitimate one but films like God’s Club (and God’s Not Dead 2) tend to approach the subject in such a melodramatic that it’s difficult to really pay much attention to their arguments.  It’s not enough that the parents in God’s Club are perhaps being a little bit paranoid in their belief that their children are going to be preached to.  Instead, the parents are portrayed as being so evil that they can’t even show the least bit of kindness to a man who has just lost his wife in a sudden tragedy.  One thing that all of these films have in common is that they take place in world in which there are no polite atheists.

Stephen Baldwin, who is usually the only lively thing about the films in which appears, gives a rather stilted performance as Michael.  According to the film’s IMDb page, Baldwin was dealing with some health issues while filming God’s Club and perhaps that’s why he seems to be so disinterested in the film.  Baldwin seems to be just as depressed when his wife is alive as he is after the car accident.  At the end of the film, everyone seems to be excited about God’s Club except for him.  It’s hard not to think that maybe Michael would be better off just retiring and maybe moving to Florida.  By the end of the film, he’s earned some time on the beach.

Cover Me (1995, directed by Michael Schroeder)


A serial killer is stalking Los Angeles, killing the models who have appeared in an adult magazine. Because they’re not very good at their jobs, neither Sgt. Bobby Colter (Rick Rossovich) nor Detective J.J. Davis (Paul Sorvino!) have come up with any leads that could lead them to the murderer. Facing a dead end, they come up with a brilliant idea. Maybe a cop could go undercover as an erotic model! Fortunately, Bobby just happens to be dating a surprisingly attractive cop named Holly (Courtney Taylor). You have to love it when a plan comes together.

At first, Holly is hesitant but, realizing that there’s no other possible way to get the killer off the streets (because it’s certainly not like Bobby or J.J. could actually do any police work on their own), she agrees to pose for some pictures. Soon, she’s appearing in the magazine, working as a stripper, and discovering that she enjoys her new uninhibited lifestyle. Meanwhile, the killer has noticed her. The killer, by the way, is Dimitri (Stephen Nichols), who frequently disguises himself as a woman and who is driven to kill by his mother. Dimitri’s identity is revealed early on in the film so this doesn’t count as a spoiler. Cover Me is a mystery but it’s a mystery where everyone figures it all out except for the people who are supposed to be figuring it out.

Cover Me was one of the many direct-to-video films that found a home on late night Cinemax in the 90s. These films were advertised as being “erotic thrillers,” though there was usually little about them that was either erotic or thrilling. Cover Me was produced by Playboy and distributed by Paramount, which means that Hugh Hefner probably used to show up on set, wearing his sea captain’s hat and asking the strippers if they wanted to come back to the mansion and help him look for his Viagra. Because it’s a Playboy film, Cover Me has higher production values than the typical 90s erotic thriller but it’s still interesting that a company best known for publishing an adult magazine would produce a film about a killer targeting nude models. In the 70s, Playboy produced things like Roman Polanski’s adaptation of MacBeth, a cinematic triumph regardless of how one feels about Polanski as a human being. By the time the 90s rolled around, they were producing slightly less classy versions of Stripped to Kill.

Still, Cover Me is better than many of the other erotic thrillers that came out during the direct-to-video era. That doesn’t mean that it was a good movie, of course. There’s a reason why “Skinemax” was go-to punchline during the 1990s. As opposed to many of the other movies of the era and the genre, Cover Me has a talented cast that tries to make the best of the material that they’ve been given. I don’t know how Rick Rossovich went from appearing in The Terminator and Top Gun to starring in something like Cover Me but he delivers his lines with a straight face, which could not have always been easy. Paul Sorvino, Elliott Gould, and Corbin Bernsen are also on hand, all playing their parts like pros. (Between L.A. Law and Psych, Bernsen was a mainstay in these type of films, almost always playing either a pimp, a pornographer, or a strip club owner.) Finally, there’s Courtney Taylor, who is actually pretty good in the role of Holly. Though the role really only calls for her to be sexy, Taylor still plays it with a lot of conviction. Taylor’s performance is natural and likable and she sells even the most clichéd dialogue. Just as when she starred in the fourth Prom Night film, Taylor is always better than her material. Unfortunately, Courtney Taylor appears to have stopped acting around 2000.

Cover Me was shot at the same time as an early CD-Rom game called Blue Heat, where I guess the player would step into Holly’s shoes and try to solve the case. Because the company that developed the game went out of business before the game was published, Blue Heat didn’t come out until two years after Cover Me. I’ve never played the game but, from what I’ve read online, it was a point-and-click game where you could go to various places in Los Angeles and search for clues and interrogate suspects. The game came with multiple endings, depending on the decisions you made. Did anyone ever play this game? Let me know in the comments!

As for Cover Me, it’s not great but it’s also not terrible, which is high praise when it come to late night CInemax.

 

Film Review: Judgment (dir by Andre Van Heerden)


After three previous movies that all dealt with the growing power of Franco Macalousso (Nick Mancuso) and the revolution spearheaded by former journalist Helen Hannah (Leigh Lewis), the Apocalypse saga finally came to a close with the 2001 film, Judgment.

One of the more interesting things about the Apocalypse franchise is that each film was done in the style of a different genre.  Apocalypse was pretty much a straight-forward, faith-based film.  Revelation attempted to be an action film.  Tribulation was a horror film.  Meanwhile, Judgment is a courtroom drama, complete with a witnesses, objections, a corrupt judge, two former lovers turned legal adversaries, and a verdict.  Of course, the verdict itself is never in question.

Helen Hannah has finally been captured by O.N.E.  (That stands for One Nation Earth.)  Instead of just executing her like he does everyone else, Macalousso wants to put her on trial.  He wants to humiliate her while the entire world is watching.  He wants a show trial.  Mitch Kendrick (Corbin Bernsen), who father was a preacher who was executed after a previous show trial, is assigned to serve as Helen’s defense attorney,  Prosecuting the case is Victoria Thorne (Jessica Steen), who is Mitch’s former lover and one of the few people to know that Mitch has a fake mark of the beast on his hand.  Victoria believes that taking part in the trial will finally bring Mitch fully over to the side of Macalousso.

The trial has been carefully scripted out but, to everyone’s shock, Mitch refuses to follow the script.  Instead, he says that Helen cannot be punished because she has only been doing what her God told her to do so, therefore, God should be on trial instead of Helen.  Macalousso decides that he actually likes the idea of putting God on trial so he agrees to let Mitch do his thing.

Meanwhile, a revolutionary named  J.T. (Mr. T) is making plans to bust Helen out of prison but he finds himself frustrated by Helen’s aversion to violence.  J.T. just wants to break into the court and shoot everyone.  “There’s another way,” everyone keeps telling him….

Judgment is the best of the Apocalypse films, which may not be saying much when you consider how bad the other films are.  That said, Leigh Lewis had considerably improved as an actress by the time that she appeared in this film and Corbin Bernsen gives a good performance as a man torn between doing the right thing or doing what he has to do to keep himself safe.  Jessica Steen and Michael Copeman (as the Judge) bring a little bit more nuance than expected to their roles and Nick Mancuso is properly charismatic and smug as Franco Macalousso.  For a faith-based film, Judgment is not particularly preachy and I appreciated the fact that the film’s message was ultimately one of peaceful resistance.  Unfortunately, the film is also about 20 minutes too long.  It clocks in at 102 minutes and there are some parts of this film that seriously dragged.

As I’ve said about the previous Apocalypse films, Judgment actually works better as a political film than a religious tract.  The film presents Franco Macalousso as being the Beast but he could just as easily be seen as the ultimate symbol of collectivism.  When it’s announced that Helen is being prosecuted for the crime of “Hatred of the Human Race” and when witnesses in the court swear an oath to the “unity of all people,” it’s not a subtle moment but it’s a lot of fun for those viewers who tend to value personal freedom over the demands of the collective.

Judgment was the final Apocalypse film, though it doesn’t really bring the overall story to a close.  Tomorrow, we’ll bring our look at the apocalypse to a close with a look at the — God help us — Left Behind series.
