Music Video of the Day: Pretty Girls by Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea (2015, directed by Cameron Duddy and Iggy Azalea)
For a while, me and my bestie Evelyn tried to recreate today’s music video of the day every weekend.
This video is based on the 80s film, Earth Girls Are Easy. I haven’t ever watched Earth Girls Are Easy but it’s apparently about aliens who land on Earth and discover that the title is true. (So that’s why there’s been so many UFO sightings lately….) In this video, Iggy lands in Britney’s pool and gets an immediate makeover. In retrospect, this is kind of a sad video. Britney’s just so happy to have a friend come by. At the end of the video, Britney’s really excited to be taken to another world, one where she presumably will not be forced to live under anyone else’s rules and she’ll be free. I’m just happy that Britney and Iggy Azalea got to have some fun.

Music Video Of The Day: Ooh La La by Britney Spears (2013, dir by Marc Klasfeld)
In today’s music video of the day, Britney Spears gets to live every film lover’s dream!
Before I selected this video for today’s music video of the day, it had been a while since I had watched it and I have to admit that I had forgotten that this song was actually written for The Smurfs. When the video started, I thought Britney and her children were watching a deliberately cheesy send-up of Harry Potter and I was like, “Well, that’s clever!”
But then Britney got transported into the movie and that’s when I saw all of the little blue people around her feet. Imagine how different this video would have been if Britney had accidentally stepped on the Smurfs and left a trail of blue gore in her wake. Some in the audience would have cheered but I imagine others would have been traumatized. Myself, I don’t know how I would have reacted as I find the Smurfs to be kind of creepy but, at the same time, I wouldn’t want Britney to have a Smurf massacre on her conscience. In the end, we should just be happy that things worked out for the best.

Actually, it is. This video dropped on Christmas Day. Well, okay, in all honesty, it dropped on December 26th, 2001. That’s close enough as far as I’m concerned. Anyone who thinks that singing about heartache while standing on a mountain in the desert isn’t a Christmas tradition has obviously never spent December in West Texas. That said, this video was filmed in Arizona and Utah and Britney really was standing on top of those mountains and singing her heart out.

Actually, this video feels even more appropriate today than it did when it was first released in 2011. This video was meant to symbolize not only Britney’s career (up to that point) but also the Britney herself had returned to reclaim her superstar status. Today, of course, it feels more like Britney has returned to reclaim her life.
