A new team assembles in the teaser for Marvel’s Thunderbolts!


Despite the superhero fatigue, Marvel’s engine keeps on chugging. While not exactly the same as DC’s The Suicide Squad, Marvel’s Thunderbolts brings together a group of heroes & villains together in the hopes that they can work together against a larger threat. If you haven’t studied, watching AntMan & the Wasp, Black Widow, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier will get you caught up on recent events.

Thunderbolts focuses on Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who is caught in a crossfire that includes the U.S. Agent, John Walker (Wyatt Russell), The Ghost, a.k.a. Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen), and the newly rehabilitated Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). I’m happy to see that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is back in the mix, along with Yelena’s dad Alexei, played by David Harbour.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts will be in cinemas May 2025.

Leigh Whannell updates a classic with his Wolf Man teaser!


I’ve enjoyed Leigh Whannell’s streak of films since going solo. His work on the Saw and Insidious films with James Wan is well known. Upgrade was a fantastic film and is one of my favorites of his. I enjoyed The Invisible Man, which took a unexpected approach to the original story. He’s at it again with Wolf Man, and it looks like it’s a more personal story here.

Starring Christopher Abbot (Poor Things) and Julia Garner(Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) star in the film, which seems to be about a family defending themselves while camping from a beast in the woods. I just hope the effects in this are on par with Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman. We’ll have to find out.

One cool thing to note here is that like James Wan did with his partner Ingrid Bisu for Malignant, Wolf Man is a spousal / partner affair. Both Lauren Schuker-Blum (wife of Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum, who produces the film) and Whannell have writing duties on this, along with Whannell’s wife, Corbett Tuck (Insidious & Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man will being in Theatres and IMAX next January.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the teaser for A Minecraft Movie!


Much like Fortnite, Minecraft is a game that everyone has either played or at least seen if they’ve kids in their vicinity. It’s basically a low resolution world building game where you face off against sprite skeletons and spiders if you either dig too deep underground or hang outside at night. It can be pretty fun, and is available on every platform from computers to the Nintendo Switch.

Jack Black seems like he’s out to cover every Video Game there is. With Super Mario Bros. and Borderlands under his belt, A Minecraft Movie is his next target. He’s not alone, though. Joining him are Jason Momoa (Fast X), Emma Myers (Netflix’s Wednesday), Emmy Winner Jennifer Coolidge (HBO’s The White Lotus), and Danielle Brooks (DC’s Peacemaker).

A Minecraft Movie will be in cinemas next April.

Shadow joins the fray in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer!


The trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dropped today, and it has Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails(Colleen O’Shaughnessey) & Knuckles (Idris Elba) squaring off against Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves. Shadow seems to be too much, even for the trio. It looks like we might get a team up with Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Of course, both Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are still on hand to cheer on our heroes with moral support.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be in cinemas this December.

Film Review: Alien Romulus (dir. by Fede Alvarez)


Lately, I don’t trust myself much when it comes to writing movie reviews. I once raved about Batman Begins when it first came out, only to have a friend/co-worker read it, check the movie out based on my thoughts. He returned with a look of disgust on his face…”That was terrible! Grumble grumble Batman, I could barely understand him.”, he said.

I dance around it, when I can. I’m almost Fifty, at an age and a point in my life where I’m easily amused by almost anything, particularly in a world where everything’s in a doomscroll. Sitting in a darkened room, watching a story play out just feels good, even if the story isn’t great. Add to this the notion that everyone will have a film of the week screen captured and spoiled by Saturday Morning (if not already), and sometimes there doesn’t feel like a need to write about these things. You don’t need me, but I’m happy to be here. I’m not helping anyone in making a decision on whether they should see a film, I’m simply cataloging my experience. That’s the beauty of it. No two experiences are similar, and it’s a joy to read how others felt about a movie while discovering my own viewpoints through my writing. This is all still fun to do, I’m finding.

So what does any of this have to do with Fede Alvarez’s Alien Romulus? Not much. I just needed to get thoughts on the page so I could rev up to writing about the film. I also wanted to warn you that I could be high on the euphoria of going to the movies. My take might not be yours, but I’m also playing Devil’s Advocate in trying to weigh what I thought they could have improved on.

Living as miners on a world where sunlight is rare, life is hard for Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny, Priscilla, Pacific Rim: Uprising) and her brother, Andy (David Jonsson, HBO’s Industry). When her friends discover a discarded ship called Romulus near an asteroid field, they decide to loot it for the tools they need for an extended hypersleep to a better destination. This becomes a problem when they discover they’re not alone on the ship they targeted. Can they escape these threats before meeting their end?

I was really impressed by Alien Romulus in a number of ways. One, I argued that the last trailer gave away too much information on the plot. I was terribly incorrect. For all that was shown, it barely touched the surface of the entire story. I found that pretty refreshing in this day and age where movie trailers rarely leave anything out. Two, there are a number of practical effects used in this film, from the animatronic, jumpy facehuggers that get more up close and personal than one would ever want to the classic Xenomorph scaling walls and dripping acid. I felt like it learned a bit or two from Alien Covenant (of which I’m not a fan) and considerably toned down the CGI where it could. The results are damn good, given this is the 9th go around in the Alien Franchise (if you want to include the two Alien vs. Predator films). Alvarez really gets the atmosphere right. Hallways are creepy and dimly lit, feeling much like Creative Assembly did with Alien Isolation (which of course built theirs from the original Alien). The space station, flight sequences and the asteroid belt are all on par what with we saw with Prometheus. The film even manages to travel in some new directions with both Xenomorph development and by the end will have you wanting to rewatch the series again. Is it all perfect? No, but I can’t say anything like that about Alien Resurrection.

From an acting standpoint, this movie clearly belongs to both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. They easily carry the film with their performances. With the exception of Isabela Merced (Dora the Explorer), I can’t say much about the other characters. I can at least say her character and performance here was far better than what she did in Madame Web earlier this year. Those three are only ones that are given any true character development through the course of the film. This isn’t to say that we don’t get good performances from Archie Renaux (Tyler), Aileen Wu (Navarro), and Spike Fearn (Bjorn). They just weren’t as memorable to me. We know the others want to move on to better things, but we never really get to know them well enough to root for or against them.

For the horror aspect, let’s face it. After so many movies, it’s a little difficult to be afraid of the Xenomorph. And yet, more with the facehuggers than with the human sized aliens, Alien Romulus does find a way to make the monsters creepy and amazingly quick. I had a few moments where I did my usual “watch the corners”, and avoided looking at the screen directly. There aren’t too many jumpscares, though they are there.

If Romulus suffers from any problems, it’s that the cast was too small for all of the elements thrown at them. I understand that it’s more of a personal story, so you’re not having a group of decimated Marines like in James Cameron’s Aliens or even a number of dead prisoners such as you had with David Fincher’s Alien3, but it was easier to get a feel of how dangerous the Xenomorphs when people were hunted left and right in different ways. The death sequences in Romulus all felt interesting, but there just weren’t enough of them for my taste. Another problem I had with the film was that it tried too hard in the last act to pay homages to other films in the series. Some of them worked well (particularly one introducing some to weapons) , and others kind of didn’t. At one point, you’re finding that the movie pulls lines and or whole sequences from the other films, which doesn’t make sense in some situations given where Romulus sits in the Alien timeline.

Imagine watching a fight in space between two Green Lanterns and one says to the other “Do you bleed?” as a reference to Batman v. Superman. Sure, it might be nice to hear, but who bleeds in space? It’s somewhat similar with Romulus in that fashion. Is that all Nostalgia is now, just re-spitting lines from older films that were more effective back then? Sitting in the front row on the sides (my favorite area), I want to say there were at least 4 walkouts during my showing, with one person coming back with drinks.

Musically, Benjamin Wallfisch does a good job here. He doesn’t try to recreate Jerry Goldsmith’s score the way Jed Kurzel did with Alien Covenant, though there are some wild heavy beats that could work better in a trance song. The sound in the film is also pretty nice, with the skittering and screeching bounding off the walls perfectly in the Regal RPX setup.

Overall, I really enjoyed Alien Romulus. While there are some elements I would have fixed (particularly with characterization and moving away from trying to reference the other films), I feel It’s a solid entry in the series, especially when I compare it to Alien Covenant or Alien Resurrection.

The Final Alien Romulus Trailer shows more than it should.


When I recommended AMC’s Interview With the Vampire to my cousin, she watched the final episode of Season 2 in reverse, despite having read the novels numerous times. She doesn’t handle anxiety when it comes to stories very well, and as such, she never reads a book or watches anything unless she can know the ending in advance. Watching her view a film for the first time is like tossing a person into a room with whatever they fear. She gets squirmy, and asks tons of questions. Whenever I watch a new movie, I tell her everything about it, scene for scene (which is partially how I got into writing about movies). On the one hand, you could argue that knowing ruins all the surprises. On the other, you’ve moviegoers that spoil movies online while they’re still in the theatre.

She’d be fine with the final trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Alien Romulus, which really does give too much of the story away. If you’re planning to go in blind this August, I wouldn’t recommend watching this. I love how they worked in Ripley’s “Lucky Star” song into this. It looks great, and anything’s a step up from Alien Covenant.

The Count of Monte Cristo (dir. by Roland V. Lee)


Note that this maybe a bit brief and off tangent. This may be one of the first reviews I’ve written for a film created well before my time. I won’t have as many movie references or personal anecdotes to add here.

I love the story of The Count of Monte Cristo. At the time of this writing, it can be found on both Amazon Prime and on Tubi.

Written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas, it’s a tale of revenge and depending on which version you watch, there’s also a bit of redemption to it. Though it’s adapted numerous times on stage and screen, I’m familiar with 3 main movie versions. You have the modern 2002 version from Kevin Reynolds, starring Jim Caviezel, Henry Cavill and Guy Pearce. There’s the 1975 TV Movie (my personal favorite), directed by David Greene and starring Richard Chamberlain, Donald Pleasance, Tony Curtis and Kate Nelligan. And finally, we have the classic 1934 rendition, directed by Donald V. Lee and starring Robert Donat, Elissa Landi, Sidney Blackmer and Louis Calhern. Most audiences may know of the film from the references made of it in 2005’s V for Vendetta.

The Count of Monte Cristo is the story of Edmund Dantes (Robert Donat, The 39 Steps) , a sailor who has everything going for him. He’s the newly minted Captain of the Pharaon, a title bestowed to him after the original captain died during a voyage near the island of Elba. Before the original Captain passes, he gives Edmond a letter to be delivered to an individual who will make himself known. This promotion and the letter also draws the jealous eyes of the would be Captain Danglars (Raymond Walburn, Christmas in July). Edmond has the heart of the lovely Mercedes de Rosas (Elissa Landi, The Yellow Ticket), but not the affections of Mercedes’ Mother (Georgia Caine, Remember the Night), the Madame de Rosas. Together with Fernand Mondego (Sidney Blackmer, Rosemary’s Baby), they often try to convince Mercedes to find someone better.

During the party for his wedding, Edmond meets the letter’s recipient and makes the delivery. Shortly afterward, both this man and Edmond are arrested. We learn the man is the father of The King’s Magistrate, Renee de DeVillefort (Louis Calhern, Julius Caesar). Choosing to protect his father (now considered a Bonapartist), DeVillfort puts on the blame on Dantes. With Mondego and Danglars as co-conspirators, they send Dantes to the dreaded Chateau D’if, an Alcatraz-like prison on the sea. To make things worse, after Napoleon is defeated, Edmond’s captors list him as deceased and his name is struck from the prison record. Dantes spends nearly 15 years in the Chateau, falling out of everyone’s memory. During his time, he discovers and befriends the Abbe Faria (O.P. Heggie, Anne of Green Gables), another prisoner who teaches Dantes various topics of the world. The Abbe also shares the secret of the De Sparda Treasure, hidden away just off the island of Monte Cristo. Edmond eventually escapes the Chateau D’If, acquires the treasure and returns to the Paris as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo.

The film has fine performances throughout, given the time frame. Donat’s Dantes is quite naive prior to the imprisonment, but as the Count, I felt he brought a lot of style and class to the character. It was much like watching an old serial of The Batman or The Shadow. Another major surprise (for me, anyway) was Sidney Blackmer as Mondego. I’ve only ever seen Blackmer as the old and strange Roman Castavet in Roman Polanski’s Rosemary Baby, so it was very interesting to see him in his prime. There’s a nice duel between Mondego and Dantes that showcased Blackmer’s athleticism as well as his acting. I also enjoyed Walburn’s Danglars, who felt like a weasel you’d find in a classic Disney animated film.

Visually, for a black and white film, there’s some good use of light and shadow here, particularly during the dimly lit scenes in the Chateau D’If and the face off between the Count and Mondego.

How Edmond chooses to face his enemies was interesting. A bit of scandal for one, greed for another and a full-on courtroom drama for a third. I thought the court case element was bit much, but given where the story was going, it made sense. Overall, The Count of Monte Cristo is a wonderful classic with great pacing throughout.

Uneasy alliances and surprises unfold in the Captain America: Brave New World teaser!


I stumbled onto this while going through my music playlist on YouTube, and I had to figure out if this was an official teaser or was just a fan-made one. Sure enough, it appears the official teaser for Marvel Studios Captain America: Brave New World is available.

Picking up after the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (or Captain America and The Winter Soldier), the film shows there are numerous changes & surprises afoot. Our long time Hulk adversary, Thaddeus Ross, shaved his mustache and changed his look with Harrison Ford taking over the role from the late William Hurt. It also looks like Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) and Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) have appearances.

Can the New Captain America handle these new threats? What is going on with Isiah? And will we finally get some information on that defeated celestial from The Eternals?

Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theatres in February 2025.

A new fighter enters the Arena in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II trailer!


I don’t know how or why we have a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Academy Award Winner Gladiator, but here it is in all its glory. It looks quite interesting, I have to say. In my opinion, Ridley’s films are a coin flip. This can go either way. And who knows? Maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll get a Kingdom of Heaven follow up. One can only hope.

Gladiator II looks like it’s expanding on the first film, at least in terms of the fighting arena. We have naval battles in the Colesseum now. Despite the fall of Commodus in the first film (Joaquin Phoenix), Rome still has issues. A young gladiator (Paul Mescal, All of Us Strangers) seems to have an issue with General Marcus Acacius, played by Wonder Woman 84 and The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal. Ridley’s also reunited with American Gangster‘s Denzel Washington, as well as Gladiator‘s Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi. Also on hand are Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One), Rory McCann (Jumanji: The Next Level), May Calamawy (Marvel’s Moon Knight) and Peter Mensah (300).

Harry Gregson-Williams (Man on Fire, Kingdom of Heaven) will be scoring the film, taking over for Hans Zimmer.

Gladiator II will be in theatres this November.

Robert Eggers drops the Nosferatu Teaser!


Last Friday, I caught the trailer for Robert Eggers’ adaptation of Murnau’s Nosferatu just before Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders. While I’m not expecting it to be the masterpiece that Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre was, it definitely has The Lighthouse and The Norseman director’s familiar imprint on it. Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson (The Witch) are both on hand, along with Lily-Rose Depp , Bill Skarsgard and Nicholas Hoult. I’m very excited for this.

Robert Eggers Nosferatu will be in theatres this Christmas.
