‘Cuz I’m A “Creep” — I’m A Weirdo —

I think I liked this one — or at least most of it?

What’s the next line in that song? Oh, yeah — “what the hell am I doing here?”

Spoiler alert : I kinda wondered that myself for the last two minutes or so of Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass’s 2014 indie horror (now streaming on Netflix even before it hits Blu-ray and DVD) Creep, but that was only after thoroughly digging the first 80-or-so  minutes a lot more.

Yes, folks, we’re back on the “found footage” train here, and with a distinctly limited cast of characters, at that — in fact, just two. Brice (who co-wrote the script) stars as “millenial looking for a buck” freelance cameraman Aaron, while Duplass (who not only co-wrote, but directs here) is Josef, who has enticed him with a $1,000 cash offer to come to his cabin up north in order to , he says, document an average day in his life for his…

Jeb Bush has a plan to save America from our supposed economic crisis — according to statements that have issued forth from his own mouth, we all need to work an unspecified number of longer hours, we shouldn’t expect to retire until we’re 67 or 68, and we’d better not look forward to Medicare being there to take care of our health insurance needs once we finally do get to stop working because he wants to “phase it out.” Apparently, if we enact all of these austerity measures (let’s just call ’em what they are, even if Jeb and his corporate sponsors think we’re stupid enough to think of them as “reforms”), then — and only then — will we get ourselves out of this mess he insists we’re in.

In short, then, poor, working-class, and even middle-class Americans should just buckle down and get ready to have a shittier…

The Devil Made Me Do It: EQUINOX (1970)

cracked rear viewer

equinox2I remember seeing this movie on a double bill at the old Olympic Theater in my hometown of New Bedford, Massachusetts. It was the main attraction, while the second feature was a little black and white zombie opus by some guy named George Romero. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was the title. Romero’s film has since been hailed as a modern day horror classic, endlessly written about, analyzed and overanalyzed. EQUINOX has pretty much faded into well-deserved obscurity.

A reporter is doing a follow up story on a strange, year old occurrence. He visits with David, a mental patient who attacks him. The head psych doctor plays him a tape of David’s taped interview, and the bizarre tale is told in flashback. Seems geology Professor Waterman (sci-fi/fantasy writer Fritz Leiber) has discovered something rather unusual and sent for David. He brings along his pal Jim and two girls. They go to…

Director: Alan Smithee (credited*) Actually Lee Madden

Writer: Oscar Brodney

Two African American cops are sent to a run down Southern plantation to evict the residents so a freeway can be built in its place. The catch? The “residents” are all Civil War ghost. The hijinx ensue.

After playing the iconic George Jefferson on “The Jefferson”, Sherman Hemsley tried his hand at the big screen in what turned out to be a huge flop. Hemsley mostly funded this movie himself which, literally, left him in financial ruin.

As much as I wanted to like this movie, Brodney’s writing made this feel like a left-over ’80s era slap-stick comedy, without the comedy.

*Director Lee Madden was so unhappy with the way the film turned out that he credited himself as “Alan Smithee” , the Directors Guild of America’s approved pseudonym for directors who do not want their name attached to a film.

If you actually made it through the movie, which I doubt you did, Hemsley also sang the theme song. And just for proof-
