I just saw that it’s been announced that Julie Strain died yesterday. She was only 57 years old but had been in poor health for a while.

Julie Strain was known as the Queen of the B-Movies and anyone who grew up watching late night Cinemax in the 90s knows that she deserved the title. She was 6’1 and her natural athleticism made her a natural for playing strong women who knew how to throw a punch, swing a sword, or shoot a gun. She always seemed to be having as much fun appearing in the movies as we were having watching them. It was said that Ginger Rogers could do everything that Fred Astaire did while wearing heels. Julie Strain could do everything Steven Seagal did while wearing a bikini and she could actually act as well!

Rest in peace, Julie Strain. Thank you for being good even when the movies were sometimes bad.

Today is the 95th birthday of the great, late Lee Van Cleef! Van Cleef got his start playing western outlaws in Hollywood westerns like High Noon and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. In the 1960s, Van Cleef did what many American actors of the time. He went overseas to find better roles and bigger paychecks. A series of roles in Spaghetti westerns made Van Cleeef one of the biggest stars in Europe and it also made him a timeless film icon.

Today is not just David Bowie’s birthday. It’s also Elvis’s! If he was still with us, Elvis Presley would be 85 years old today.

During his lifetime, Elvis was as well-known for his movies as his music. Elvis, who admired James Dean and Marlon Brando and wanted to be known as a serious actor, hated the majority of his films. After 1960’s G.I. Blues, almost all of Elvis’s films were musical comedies that provided him with little opportunity to show off his dramatic skills. Elvis preferred his first four films, Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, and King Creole, all of which gave him a chance to not just sing but to do some serious acting as well.

With today’s edition of 4 Shots From 4 Films, we wish a very happy birthday to the one and only Leon Isaac Kennedy! Born in 1949, Leon Isaac Kennedy was working as a successful disc jockey by the time he turned 17. (He was known as Leon the Lover.) Kennedy went on to achieve cult fame by starring as prison boxer Too Sweet in the Penitentiary films, along with appearing opposite Muhammad Ali in Body and Soul and Chuck Norris in Lone Wolf McQuade. Kennedy, who turns 71 today, is also an evangelist.
