Happy New Year!

A Belated (?) Happy Life Day From The Shattered Lens

Happy Life Day!

Now, I know there’s some confusion out there as to when exactly Life Day is celebrated.  Some people say that it’s celebrated on November 17th because that’s the date that The Star Wars Holiday Special premiered way back in 1978.  But listen …. I’ve seen The Holiday Special.  I forced my friends in the Late Night Movie Gang to watch it with me a few years ago and they’ve never forgiven me.  And I can tell you, from having watched it, that Life Day takes place on December 25th.  I mean, it was so obviously an intergalactic version of Christmas that I don’t even know where to start.  November 17th?  No way!  Life Day is December 25th!

And, even if it isn’t — well, isn’t a late holiday greeting better than no holiday greeting at all?

So, while those of us here on Earth celebrate our holidays, other planets are celebrating Life Day and that’s okay.  Vive la différence!

So, to all of our readers who are observing today or who maybe observed back in November or whenever — Happy Life Day from the Shattered Lens!

Happy Festivus!

Get out your aluminum pole!

Make your list of grievances!

Prepare for the feats of strength!

Today is a Festivus for the rest of us!

22 years ago, the world, or at least the part of the world that was watching Seinfeld at the time, learned about Festivus, the joyous holiday created by Frank Constanza.  What many people did not realize at the time was that Festivus was a real holiday, albeit one celebrated by only one family.  The writer of the episode and the man usually credited with creating Festivus, Dan O’Keefe, first celebrated Festivus in 1966.  It was a holiday created by his father, the journalist Daniel O’Keefe and it was initially meant to celebrate the elder O’Keefe’s first date with his future wife, Deborah.

Of course, in the world of Seinfeld, it was created to celebrate Frank Costanza beating up another Christmas shopper.

Regardless of why you’re celebrating today, a Happy Festivus to all!

Happy Birthday, Arleigh!

Today is a very special day as we celebrate the birthday of the founder of the Shattered Lens, the one and only …. ARLEIGH SANDOC!

Happy birthday, Arleigh!

Nearly 10 years ago, Arleigh founded the site that would eventually become the Shattered Lens.  He recruited our initial crew of four writers.  (We’ve obviously grown since those early days) and he asked me to come aboard as co-editor of the site.  Tomorrow is thanksgiving but I can tell you what I’m thankful for today.  I’m thankful that Arleigh took a chance and made me a part of this site.  I have grown so much as a writer, due to the opportunities and the freedom that Arleigh offered to me and every other writer on this site.

Next year, we’ll be celebrating the TSL’s 10th birthday all year long.  2020 is going to be all about celebrating everything that this site is about and I hope we’ll see each and everyone of you there.  Today, however, is all about celebrating Arleigh.

Happy birthday, Arleigh!
