6 Trailers For Halloween, Part 3

Hi there and welcome to the 3rd and final part of this special Halloween edition of Lisa Marie’s Favorite Grindhouse and Exploitation Film Trailers!

For this final edition, we take a look at horror films that were nominated for Oscars.  Because of their Oscar pedigree, these films are rarely referred to as being exploitation films.   However, have no doubt — at heart, these films all belong in the grindhouse.

1) The Exorcist (1973)

Among other nominations, The Exorcist was the first horror film to ever receive a nomination for best picture of the year.  The Exorcist, however, lost the Oscar to The Sting.

2) Jaws (1975)

Jaws was nominated for best picture in 1975 but lost to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

3) The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The Silence of the Lambs was the first horror movie to win best picture.

4) The Sixth Sense (1999)

The Sixth Sense was nominated for best picture but lost to American Beauty.

5) Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Ruth Gordon won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her performance in this film.

6) Shadow of the Vampire (2000)

Willem DaFoe was nominated for best supporting actor but lost to Benicio Del Toro in Traffic.

Trailer: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Katniss Everdeen is back!  Here’s the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and, it’s nice to say, this one is full of details that seem to have been included specifically for those of us who have read the book.  The film itself will be released on November 22nd.

Trailer: X-Men: Days of Future Past

Here’s our first glimpse of X-Men: Days of Future Past.  While there’s all sorts of things that I could say about this preview — mostly along the lines of how much I’m looking forward to seeing Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, and James McAvoy all gathered together on the same screen — I think the trailer can certainly speak for itself.

Trailer: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Official)

We take a brief break from all things horror here at Through the Shattered Lens to bring to you the first official trailer for Marvel Studios second film in their Phase 2 of their Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier sees the return of Steve Rogers aka Captain America (The first Avenger) post-Battle of New York. He’s now an official member of S.H.I.E.L.D. but soon realizes that his 40’s ideals may not mesh well with the all-encompassing and super-secretive intelligence organization. From the look and feel of the trailer it looks like the film’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, are going for the conspiracy thriller tone for this new Captain America entry.

This is a good choice considering that the screenplay has been heavily influenced by Ed Brubaker’s run on the Captain America comics which also introduced the Winter Soldier of the film’s title.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for a Spring, April 4, 2014, release date.

Trailer: Endless Love

When Jeff and I went to see the remake of Carrie earlier today, we arrived at the theater just as the trailer for another remake started to play.  The first version of Endless Love was released in 1981 and is best known for featuring the film debut of Tom Cruise.  The second version of Endless Love will be coming out next year on Valentine’s Day.

Judging from the trailer, the film looks like it could be both sexy and silly; sexy because it stars Alex Pettyfer and silly … well, really, for pretty much the exact same reason.  However, I will give this film that benefit of the doubt just because I appreciated the fact that the trailer made good use of Florence + The Machine’s cover of Addicted to Love.

 

Horror Trailer: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

It’s October — where are all the new horror films?

Well, with the exception of Carrie, it looks that they’re all hang out in next January.  January, of course, is the month that the studios traditionally dump all of the films that they don’t have much faith in.

Whether that has anything to do with the release date of the next Paranormal Activity film is open to conjecture.

Trailer: The Avengers: Age of Ultron (SDCC 2013 Reveal)

This past summer those who attended the Marvel panel over at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 were treated to Joss Whedon’s reveal for The Avengers sequel.

From the mid-credits scene at the end of The Avengers many thought that the villain for the sequel will be the cosmic baddie Thanos. I guess Whedon and Feige decided that it was best to keep Whedon in their pockets for now and went in a different direction. The sequel to The Avengers will have one of the superhero team’s toughest and most persistent archenemies: The self-aware and truly pissed off android known as Ultron.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will not be following the events from this past year’s Age of Ultron crossever series in the comics. It instead will just use the title and create a brand-new story behind the origins (this time around it won’t be Hank Pym aka Ant-Man who creates Ultron, but someone else) of the Avengers main enemy and it’s plans for the team and Earth.

This change in Ultron’s creator didn’t sit well with some of the purists who want everything in the Marvel Universe to be adapted exactly how it was originally written. Fortunately, I’m not one of them and I actually think this change further solidifies the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it’s own alternate universe that comprises the near-infinite realities of the Marvel Multiverse. Where the universe with make’s up the original comic books have been given the Earth-616 label the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now been given it’s own of Earth-199999.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Whedon and company will come up with to make Ultron a villain worthy to get the team back together again. It helps that they’ve chosen James Spader to voice the bugshit-crazy and angry Ultron.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will premiere in our universe on May 1, 2015.
