I recently discovered that Dallas’s own Newy Scruggs has become something of a Youtube cult figure as a result of a report he filed from San Francisco shortly before the start of the World Series.
I think Newy is the sports reporter for one of the local stations down here. I’m not sure which station because, to be honest, I make it a point not to watch the news. (I rely on rumor and street innuendo for my knowledge of current events…) However, I do know about Newy because when there’s somebody living in your city with a name like Newy Scruggs, you better know about it.
Anyway, here’s Newy Scruggs visiting Arleigh’s hometown….
So, now the question is this — what lies in the future for Newy Scruggs? Will he become a famous, legendary Youtube messiah like the Garbage Day Guy from Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2?
Or will Newy Scruggs suffer the same tragic fate as past Youtube stars?
One thing is for sure. I will always enjoy randomly saying “Newy Scruggs.”
LOL, I remember the news here in the Bay Area playing that clip of the reporter pointing out the smell of weed in the air. The dude was pretty funny and cool about it.
I remember some blog reporter over in Dallas writing that SF didn’t deserve to be in the World Series because it was a city of gays, potheads, bondage-loving hippies and a few other labels that I have a feeling The City is actually proud of.

LOL, Dallas actually has waaaaaaaaaay more potheads than most other places in the country. We also have a very open and socially prominent gay community (and Dallas nearly became the first among the top 10 biggest U.S. cities to elect an openly gay mayor in 2007), a good deal of our economy is generated by sex club business, and there’s quite a few hippies down around Deep Ellum. That blogger was either 1) in denial or 2) spends all of his time in the DFW metroplex as opposed to Dallas itself.
Newy Scruggs has like a sports talk show that he co-hosts on the weekends. He and his co-host appeared in a series of commercials that parodied the “I’m a Mac” commercials with Justin Long. The co-host, who I think may actually go by Mac, says, “I’m a mac.” Scruggs very enthusiastically replies, “And I’m a Newy!”
I mean, I know — it’s kinda silly and stupid but its kinda cute too. I’ve never seen the show because, as I may have mentioned, sports just makes me go all googly-brained but I’ve always liked Newy if just because of the commercials.
