Trailer: Velvet Buzzsaw

A few years ago, Dan Gilroy, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rene Russo excited film viewers everywhere when they collaborated on Nightcrawler, a portrait of a psychologically damaged man who proves to be quite adept at playing the media game.  The combination of Gillroy’s atmospheric direction and satirical script with Gyllenhaal’s wonderfully unhinged lead performance made for an incendiary and prophetic film.  Just why exactly Nightcrawler was totally snubbed by the Academy continues to be one of the most perplexing mysteries in recent Oscar history.  Despite strong support from the critics, not even Gyllenhaal picked up a nomination.

Dan Gilroy followed Nightcrawler up with Roman Israel, Esq., which was as forgettable as Nightcrawler was memorable but which still managed to accomplish what Nightcrawler didn’t.  It received an Oscar nomination for its leading man.  One gets the feeling that nomination had more to do with Denzel Washington’s reputation for award-worthy work than for anything that actually happened in the movie.  Gyllenhaal went on to give award-worthy performances in films like Southpaw and Stronger but the Academy has continued to snub him.  As for Russo, she’s only appeared in three films post-Nightcrawler and none of them were worthy of her talents.

Well, this year, Gyllenhaal, Russo, Gilroy, and Nightcrawler‘s cinematographer, Robert Elswit, have reunited for Velvet Buzzsaw!  That’s right, they’ve got the band together again!  The film appears to be a mix of horror film and an art world satire.  As the film’s plot description puts it: After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.  The trailer would seem to suggest that paintings themselves are coming to life to enact revenge on sell-outs, everywhere.  The idea of haunted paintings has been explored by everyone from Oscar Wilde to H.P. Lovecraft to Lucio Fulci and I look forward to seeing what type of spin Gilroy puts on it.

Along with Russo and Gyllenhaal, this film also features John Malkovich.  Honestly, I don’t think you can do an art world satire without finding a role for Malkovich.  Much as how Bill Paxton simply belonged in Nightcrawler, it seems that Malkovich would just belong in Velvet Buzzsaw.

Velvet Buzzsaw will be playing at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it will be officially released by Netflix on February 1st!  I get the feeling that we’re either going to love it or we’re going to hate it.  I don’t think there’s going to be much in-between.

Here’s The Trailer For Greta!

So, the trailer below is a pretty good example of why people like me sometimes complain that some trailers give away way too much information.

The trailer starts out with Chloe Grace Moretz finding a bag on the subway and taking it back to its owner, who turns out to be Isabelle Huppert.  So far, so good.  Isabelle Huppert is a brilliant actress and Chloe Grace Moretz can be great when she has the right material to work with.

In the trailer, it appears that Moretz and Huppert quickly become friends.  However, a minute into the trailer, there’s a big twist.  And really, that’s where the trailer should have ended.  Instead, it goes on for another minute and a half and it reveals way too much.  To be honest, I felt as if I had pretty much seen the whole film by the time the trailer ended.

Oh well.  I’ll still see the movie.

What could inspire the entire world to obsess over 30 seconds of video?

Why, it must be the latest installment in the MCU!

A new 30-second TV spot for Captain Marvel was released earlier today.  It’s …. well, to be honest, it’s pretty much more of the same.  Hopefully, Captain Marvel will be as powerful as everyone says she is because 50% of the universe was wiped out at the end of the last two MCU films.  Seriously, someone needs to do something about that.

Here’s The Trailer From I’m Not Here

There are a few things about the trailer for I’m Not Here that cause me to feel cautiously optimistic about this film.

First off, the film stars two super talented actors, J.K. Simmons and Sebastian Stan.  Simmons deservedly won an Oscar for Whiplash and he’s one of our best-known and most recognizable character actors.  That said, it’s rare that he ever gets a starring role, even though he certainly has the talent to handle them.  Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan is a good actor who always seems to be at risk of getting overshadowed by all of the other big stars in the MCU.

Secondly, the trailer’s song made me cry.

Now, here’s what I’m cautious in my optimism.  After spending two years on the festival circuit, I’m Not Here will finally be getting released in March of next year.  In the past, it was rare that good films were ever released in March.  That said, both Get Out and Grand Budapest Hotel were March releases so maybe it’s time to leave that superstition behind.

Here’s The Trailer For Us!

Last year, Jordan Peele set the world on fire with his directorial debut, Get Out.

Next year, he’ll be releasing his second film, Us.  Will this film be able to live up to the huge expectations that were engendered by the unexpected success of Get Out?  We’ll find out in March!

Yeah, yeah …. this trailer has been out for a while.  I realize that.  However, I was on vacation when it first dropped and today, being Christmas, seems like a good time to share the trailer for a film that, for me, is like a gift.

Here’s The First Trailer for Hellboy!

I’m like really trying hard to think of something to say about the first trailer for the upcoming Hellboy film but, to be honest, it just kinda seems like almost every other super hero trailer that I’ve seen recently.  You’ve got some one liners.  You’ve got some glowering extras.  You’ve got some hints of extreme violence.  You’ve got a cheesy song playing in the background for some reason.  (Mony Mony?  Really?)  It’s like they took the trailers for Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy and they just forced Hellboy into them.

That said, I liked both Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy…..

Anyway, Hellboy will be released on April 12th, which is often not a great sign when it comes to films like this.  (An April release generally means that the studios is hoping to make a quick buck before the summer blockbusters come along.)  On the plus side, Neil Marshall’s usually a pretty good director.  So, we’ll see what happens!

Here’s The Trailer for Creed II

The first Creed was a boxing film that was so good that even a non-boxing fan like me could enjoy it!

Will the second Creed be as effective?  It’s hard to say.  Michael B. Jordan is returning.  Sylvester Stallone is returning.  You know who isn’t returning?  Ryan Coogler.  And while Jordan and Stallone were both a huge part of Creed‘s success, Ryan Coogler’s contribution — as both a director and a writer — cannot be underestimated.

Creed II is based on a screenplay by Stallone.  (Reportedly, Stallone came close to directing it as well, before hiring Steve Caple, Jr. for the job.)  This time, Adonis Creed battles the son of the man who killed his father.  Apparently, Rocky survived the illness that was threatening his life in the first Creed because he’s back and once again offering up punch-drunk advice.

Will the second Creed live up to the first?  It’s hard to say but the trailer certainly looks effective.  Creed II will be released on November 21st.  While I don’t think anyone is expecting Creed II to be an Oscar contender, the film could potentially help Michael B. Jordan’s supporting actor campaign for his role in Black Panther.  And if Creed II is a failure …. well, who knows?

We’ll see what happens!

Here’s The Trailer for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs!

Today, everyone else is talking about the fact that Henry Cavill will not be playing Superman in any future DC films but all I care about is the fact that the trailer for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has been released!

This is the latest film from the Coen Brothers.  It’s a western.  Originally, it was going to be a miniseries but apparently, the Coens decided that it worked better as a movie so they edited the anthology together.  It’s six stories about death in the old west and it will soon be available on Netflix!

Here’s The Trailer For F–k You All: The Uwe Boll Story

Somewhere on this site, I once posted my opinion that Uwe Boll was the worst director of all time.

That, of course, was many years ago and I posted that before watching Ulli Lommel’s Zodiac movie.  At the time that I posted that, Boll was mostly known for directing movies that were based on a video games.  A little bit later, Boll would get political and direct films like Assault of Wall Street and that led to some critics saying that perhaps Boll wasn’t as bad as they thought he was.

Myself, I stand by my original claim.  Uwe Boll was the worst director of all time.  I say was because he’s apparently retired from filmmaking.  Before he retired — and this is actually really neat — he challenged some of his fiercest internet detractors to a boxing match.  Many of them accepted, not realizing that Boll was an accomplished boxer before he became a director.  Say what you will about Boll’s films but I imagine that, by literally beating the crap out of some of his critics, he got to live every director’s dream.

Anyway, there’s a documentary coming out about Uwe Boll.  It’s called Fuck You All: The Uwe Boll Story.  I may or I may not see it.  Here’s the trailer!
