Lisa’s Week In Review: 5/20/19 — 5/26/19

Let’s see.  Last week started with my DVR exploding and me slightly burning my thumb while unplugging it.  I lost a total of 267 recorded programs.  That was bad.

However, I got a new DVR on Wednesday and the little burn mark on my thumb that had me so concerned has nearly faded away.  Even more importantly, I no longer have the obligation of watching those 267 recorded programs hanging over my head.  Sometimes, losing something is the only way that you can move forward.  So, that’s good.

This week is ending with me shadowbanned on twitter, which means that my tweets are currently not showing up in twitter searches.  Needless to say, this is very frustrating, especially since Twitter refuses to tell me what I did to upset their precious algorithm.  That’s bad.

However, shadowbans are only temporary and I have enough followers who are generous with their likes and retweets that not showing up in a twitter search isn’t going to massively effect the number of people who come across my reviews.  And, even more importantly, all of the drama over the twitter algorithm has reminded me of just what a first world problem social media truly is.  (I mean, seriously — go tell someone living in a war zone about how getting temporarily shadowbanned is the worst thing that ever happened to you.)  If nothing else, this has helped me to gain some sort of perspective and that’s a good thing.

Finally, I spent today and I’ll be spending most of tomorrow at Lake Texoma with the people who I love.  And you know what?  That’s the most important thing of all.  Above all else, there is love.

Have a good week, everyone.

Lisa’s Week In Review: 4/29/19 — 5/5/19

What a week.  We lost two cultural icons, the director John Singleton and the actor, Peter Mayhew.  I have to say that I was surprised and kind of touched to discover that, after starring in one of the most successful films of all time, Peter Mayhew ended up settling down in Boyd, Texas.  I’ve driven through Boyd, it’s a nice little town and, from what I’ve heard, Peter Mayhew was a nice man.

On a happier note, Happy Cinco De Mayo, everyone!  And, on a purely personal note, I feel like I’m back.  After spending last month struggling to get anything written, I feel like I have finally woken up and I’m ready to enjoy the rest of the year!  That’s the power of Avengers: Endgame, I suppose.

Lisa’s Week In Review: 4/22/19 — 4/28/19

I seriously need a “I Survived The Battle Of Winterfell” t-shirt.  As I sit here typing this, I just finished watching Game of Thrones and I am mentally and physically exhausted.  Seriously, I thought sitting through five presidential town halls in a row was difficult but watching Klobuchar, Sanders, Harris, Buttigieg, and Warren is nothing when compared to visiting Westeros in winter.

Lisa’s Week In Review — 4/15/19 — 4/21/19

On Monday afternoon, I looked up at the television in my office and I saw the sight of Notre-Dame Cathedral de Paris on fire.

As a lover of history and a lover of art and, yes, as someone raised Catholic, the sight broke my heart.  When Jeff and I were in the UK last November, we had actually made plans to cross the channel spend a day in Paris and, certainly, we were looking forward to visiting Notre-Dame.  Unfortunately, because of the rioting that was going on during that time, we had to change our plans.  As I watched Notre-Dame burn, I realized that, regardless of whether the structure was saved or not, history was dying on the screen in front of me.  When I saw the spire fall, tears came to my mismatched eyes.

And yet, when the fire was finally extinguished, there was good news to go with the bad.  The relics had been saved.  The statues that were normally on the spire had been removed before the fire.  There was damage.  There was loss.  But, thanks to bravery of the firefighters and a determined priest, so much had been saved!  For many of us, the photo below seemed to sum up the aftermath of the Notre-Dame fire:

Now, seven days after the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral, I am again heart-broken, this time for the victims of the terrorist bombings in Sri Lanka.  On Easter Sunday, three churches and three hotels were bombed.  As of right now, the death toll stands at 215, with over 400 injured.  It’s hard to know what to say when confronted with such evil.

As for me, I spent this Easter weekend with my sisters and it felt good and right for everyone to be back together for a few days.  I managed to get through Easter Vigil without setting anyone’s hair on fire and. even more importantly, without anyone setting my hair on fire, and, for that, I am thankful.  This was a week in which I saw both the best and the worst of humanity.  Hopefully, next week will feature more of the former and less of the latter.

Lisa’s Week In Review: 3/18/19 — 3/24/19

Bleh.  I might to watch a lot of movies and write a lot of reviews today but, as I sit here writing this, I am currently so sick that even looking at the glowing screen of my laptop gives my motion sickness.  Like seriously, I had to take a Dramamine just to be able to move the arrow across the screen.  Hopefully, I’ll be a bit better tomorrow.

Tragically, we lost both John Carl Buechler and Larry Cohen this week.  Buechler’s audio commentary for Friday the 13th Part VIII, which he recorded with Kane Hodder, is a favorite of mine.  As for Larry Cohen, he was a true maverick and his independent spirit represented the best of American cinema.  My favorite Cohen film?  God Told Me To.

Lisa’s Week In Review: 3/11/19 — 3/17/19

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!

Another week comes to a close and what a week it was.  It started with celebrities bribing colleges to ensure that their children were accepted and it ended with James Gunn getting his old job back.  For one group of students, Spring Break has ended and, for another, it has just begun.  And I can hear the voice out there, all asking, “Lisa, when are you reviewing Captain Marvel!?”  Next week, I promise.

As for today, it’s St. Patrick’s Day.  Among his many accomplishments, St. Patrick banished all of the snakes from Ireland.  Some people will tell you that there were never snakes in Ireland to begin with but those people would never have the courage to say that to St. Patrick’s face.
