A Yakuza Apocalypse Is Upon Us

Yakuza Apocalypse

Takashi Miike.

That name conjures up so much many different reactions. Miike has earned the reputation as one of the most dangerous filmmakers currently working. His has dabbled in so many different genres that one could never put a finger on which one he’s best at.

He’s done gangster epics, splatterpunk horror, psychological horror, kid’s fantasy, horror-comedy musical, dark fantasy, samurai period piece right up to video game adaptations. You name the film genre and he’s probably done one or two of it.

His latest, Yakuza Apocalypse, doesn’t really need to be described other than it has yakuza gangsters, vampires, martial arts and giant frog master (the final scene in the trailer makes this film worth the price of admission).

Yakuza Apocalypse made it’s premiere in Japan this past June 20, 2015 and should make the genre film festivals the rest of the year.

Trailer: Truth

Here’s the trailer for Truth, a film about Dan Rather, Mary Mapes, and a bunch of forged documents.  Judging from the trailer, it looks super tedious but I’m sure it’ll get an A from the reviewer at the A.V. Club.  This looks like the type of boring political film that I would normally pay money to avoid seeing but since it’s being talked up as a potential Oscar nominee, I guess I’ll have to see it and a lot of other movies that I don’t really care that much about.

For the record, I will totally change my opinion if, at some point during Truth, Dan Rather is heard to say, “Hail Hydra.”

Here’s the Second Trailer for Point Break!

Look, I’ll be honest with you.  I made it about halfway through this 2 minute 30 second trailer before the nonstop testosterone got so overwhelming that I stopped watching.  From what I saw, Point Break kind of looks like an attempt to do a Fast and Furious-type movie without featuring any of the self-awareness that make the Fast and Furious movies so much fun.

But who knows?  I’ve been wrong before.

For some reason, this movie is opening on Christmas Day.

Here’s The Second Trailer For Steve Jobs!

I’m kind of torn as far as the upcoming Steve Jobs films is concerned.

It’s about Steve Jobs, about whom I’m not really that interested.

But it stars Michael Fassbender, who I absolutely love.

It was written by Aaron Sorkin, whose work I usually find to be overwitten and cutesy.

But it was directed by Danny Boyle, who is one of my favorite directors.

Plus, it also features Kate Winslet, who I absolutely adore, and Seth Rogen, who I think could be an intriguing dramatic actor.  As well, it looks like it’s going to be nominated for a bunch of Oscars so I’m going to have to see it whether I want to or not.

Here’s the 2nd trailer for Steve Jobs.  It’s definitely better than the first trailer.

Here’s The Second Trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II!

Prim!

The upcoming release of The Scorch Trials (and my total apathy to it, along with my reactions to Divergent and Insurgent) only serves to remind me how much I’m looking forward to the final installment in The Hunger Games saga and how much I’m going to miss it all when it’s over.

(And, after you watch the trailer, why not check out some of our past Hunger Games reviews — like this one or this one or this one or maybe this one.)

Here’s The Latest Trailer for In The Heart of the Sea!

Here’s the latest trailer for In The Heart Of The Sea!  The film may be an Oscar contender so I guess I’m going to have to see it, despite my obsessive fear of drowning.

Plus, it stars Chris Hemsworth!  Hopefully, In The Heart of the Sea will help us forget that he also appeared in Vacation this year.

This trailer is HARDCORE

Hardcore

Gamers have been clamoring for some of their favorite games to be made into full-length feature films. Whether it be rpgs, adventure or first-person shooters the games that have had a film adaptation were usually not very good. Even the classic first-person shooter Doom got it’s own film with even a gimmicky sequence near the end that put the action in first-person perspective just like the game. In the end, the film didn’t end up being very good.

Last year, there was a crowdfunding for a project that would take that first-person perspective and build a film around it. At first, it sounded like another take on the found footage craze, but this time around it’s not a film using the found footage narrative, but a film that was from the point of view of the protagonist. The film from start to finish will not stop and we’d only see things from the lead’s viewpoint.

This was done to great effect with the remake of the horror from Maniac. Now we shall see how well it works in an action genre that looks to blur the lines what’s film and what’s video game. Just from the released trailer alone this looks quite like some of the first-person shooters gamers have been eating up for the past decade. Having the film also stay in first-person could also make for many audiences to lose their mind or their lunches or both.

Hardcore just had it’s premiere on September 12, 2015 over at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Here’s The Trailer for Deathgasm!

So, I just watched the trailer for Deathgasm, a new horror comedy from New Zealand and seriously, what else can I say other than…

Oh.  My.  God!

To be honest, when I read that this film was about a heavy metal band fighting a demon, I was kinda like bleh.  I mean, that is so seriously not my type of music.  (If the movie was about a DJ fighting a demon with the the power of EDM, that would be a different story.)  But the trailer is just so over-the-top and crazy that I may have to give Deathgasm a chance.

Here’s The Trailer for The Lobster!

Here’s the trailer for The Lobster!

It’s a film in which a government forces single people to a resort where they are transformed into animals.  (Like a lobster, for instance.)  The film caused quite a stir at Cannes earlier this year and personally, I can’t wait to see it for myself!
