Retro Television Review: St. Elsewhere 2.22 “Hello, Goodbye”


Welcome to Retro Television Reviews, a feature where we review some of our favorite and least favorite shows of the past! On Fridays, I will be reviewing St. Elsewhere, a medical show which ran on NBC from 1982 to 1988.  The show can be found on Hulu and, for purchase, on Prime!

This week, season two comes to an end.

Episode 2.22 “Hello, Goodbye”

(Dir by Linda Day, originally aired on May 16th, 1984)

Due to St. Eligius being structurally unsound, the first floor is temporarily closed.  The ER, which was the busiest part of the hospital, is no longer operative and Shirley Daniels is assigned to redirect any and all ambulances to Boston General.  As Joan explains it, either the first or the third floor had to be closed so that a team of engineers could strengthen the building.  The third floor is surgery, where all the money is made.  And so, it’s the ER that closes.  Joan, meanwhile, is designated as the scapegoat for all of the recent problems at St. Eligius.  She loses her job with the mayor’s office.

Fresh from interviewing a nervous Dr. Elliott Axelrod (Stephen Furst) for a position as a resident, Dr. Auschlander collapses.  Dr. Westphall fears that his old friend is going to die but finally, Auschlander wakes up and says that he’s not done fighting yet.  Neither is St. Eligius.

Luther finds a stuffed Cheshire cat for a young heart patient.  Dr. Craig finally starts to forgive his drug addict son, Stephen (Scott Paulin).  And Dr. Morrison takes his son on a walking tour of Boston and meets a college student named Clancy (a young Helen Hunt).  Even though Clancy label Morrison a “boomer,” she still spends the night with him.  Morrison finally takes off his wedding ring and appears ready to try to move on with his life.

The second season ends on a melancholy note.  Apparently, the show’s producers weren’t sure whether or not St. Elsewhere was going to be renewed for a third season and this episode was designed to work as both a season and a series finale.  Very few of the regular characters appear and the episode is dominated by Westphall and Morrison, both of whom tend to be rather somber.  In other words, this is a depressing episode but it’s not an episode without hope.  Auschlander does wake up.  Morrison does pursue a tentative relationship with Clancy.  Even with the hospital temporarily shut down, life goes on.  Unlike Wendy Armstrong, nobody gives up.  It’s sad but at least there’s a chance that things could get better.

Both this episode and the second season overall were a roller coaster, deftly mixing drama and comedy and giving the show’s ensemble cast a chance to shine.  Next week, we start season three!

Late Night Retro Television Review: Highway to Heaven 3.14 “All That Glitters”

This week, a conman seeks refuge in a church.

Episode 3.14 “All that Glitters”

(Dir by Michael Landon, originally aired on January 7th, 1987)

There’s a fire raging in the city and elderly homeowners are being forced to evacuate.  “Father” Jonathan and “Father” Mark open up an abandoned church so that the people have some place to stay while the fires are burning.  Good for them and also good for this show for finally acknowledging Catholicism.

Also hiding out in the church and disguised as a priest is Charley Trapola (John Pleshette), a con artist who, despite his criminal profession, actually has a good heart.  Charley has a briefcase with him, one that is full of money.  A group of criminals want the briefcase back but, at least initially, they know better than to try anything in the church.  Instead, they decide to wait for Charley to come out.  Inside the church, Charley gets to know Wanda (Didi Conn), a shy but kind-hearted woman who goes to Confession every day.

This episode was okay.  Usually, when Jonathan and Mark go undercover as clergyman, they’re portrayed as being wishy-washy Episcopalians or vaguely liberal Methodists so I was happy that they were Catholic for this episode.  John Pleshette and Didi Conn were both well-cast as this episode’s guest stars.  They eventually made for a very sweet and likable couple.  My main issue with this episode is that it tried to do a bit too much.  Not only did we have Charley being chased by the gangsters but we also had Wanda dealing with her shyness and Mark and Jonathan dealing with the people were seeking shelter and looking for their loved ones.  This episode — and not that weird marriage counseling episode — would have benefitted from an extra hour.  As it was, it just felt a bit overstuffed.  As well, this is another episode in which Jonathan reveals early on that he’s angel and, oddly enough, Charley has no hesitation about believing him.  I always prefer the episodes where Jonathan doesn’t reveal who he really is.  When Jonathan reveals that he’s an angel, it almost seems like cheating.  The show is always more effective when people decide to open up their hearts on their own as opposed to doing so because they feel they’ve been ordered to.

There’s an odd scene where the three thugs break into the church and pull a gun on Jonathan.  After Jonathan gives them fair warning about “the boss,” the main thug attempts to shoot Jonathan.  Needless to say, the bullets don’t have any effect on an angel.  However, a sudden blue lights fills the church and suddenly, the three men are apparently zapped out of existence.  Jonathan later jokes that he’s not sure where the three men are but that they probably aren’t happy.  So, did the three men go straight to Hell?  Are they dead?  I understand the logic behind the scene but it’s not really something you expect from a show where the main theme is usually that everyone has a chance for redemption.

Next week, Dick Van Dyke plays a homeless puppeteer …. uh oh.  This sounds like it could a little bit cringey …. well, we’ll see.

This week …. it’s Halloween!

Episode 2.5 “The Devil and Jonathan Smith”

(Dir by Michael Landon, originally aired on October 30th, 1985)

It’s Halloween and Mark Gordon has got himself in some trouble.

Left alone while Jonathan helps a guy learn that gambling is never a good idea, Mark accidentally runs over a kid.  The child is taken to the hospital in critical condition.  Though Mark is told that the accident was not his fault, he still feels guilty and remarks to one doctor (Anthony Zerbe) that he would even give up his own soul for the child to get better.  And wouldn’t you know yet — suddenly, the child gets better!

It turns out that the doctor wasn’t a doctor at all.  He was Jabez Stone, a bookstore owner who works for the Devil (played, with two horns on his head, by Michael Berryman).  Jabez explains that unless Mark holds up his end of the bargain, the child will die.  He gives Mark a contract to sign, stating that he will give his soul to the Devil at the end of Halloween.  Without Jonathan around to advise him, Mark signs the contract.

When Jonathan does finally return from his mission, he’s not happy to hear about what Mark has done.  Jonathan explains that he can’t just order Jabez to destroy the contract.  Instead, he’s going to have to somehow convince Jabez to give him the contract.  In short, Jonathan is going to have to pull a con job.  Since he’s an angel, Jonathan is not allowed to lie or steal.  But there is a con artist named CJ Barabbas (Conrad Janis) who might be willing to help.

Or, CJ might be planning on tricking Jonathan into surrendering his own soul to Devil!  As CJ tells Jabez, he would be willing to do anything to make sure he got a cushy office job if he should happen to end up in Hell.  Is CJ planning on betraying Jonathan or is it just another part of the con?

Well, you can guess the answer.  We’re only in the second season of a five-season show and, if Jonathan lost his soul, that would make the rest of the series kind of awkward.  There’s never any doubt that CJ is playing a long con on Jabez and the Devil and it’s actually pretty easy to guess just how exactly he’s going to pull it off.  This isn’t The Sting.  It’s Highway to Heaven.

That said, this was a fun episode.  Michael Berryman and Anthony Zerbe both seemed to be having a ball playing such cartoonishly evil characters and Conrad Janis was actually rather charming in the role of CJ Barabbas.  Season 2 has gotten off to an uneven start but this episode was both humorous and, in its way, kind of touching.  Landon and French were close friends in real life and that friendship comes through as Jonathan tries to keep Mark from spending an eternity in Hell.

Next week, Jonathan teaches a bunch of factory workers a lesson about pollution!

Retro Television Reviews: Fantasy Island 3.22 “My Fair Pharaoh/The Power”

Episode 3.22 “My Fair Pharaoh/The Power”

This week, Mr. Roarke welcomes two people with two very different fantasies.  Neither one of their fantasies really make much sense but you know Mr. Roarke.  He’s going to give the people what they want, unless he takes some sort of personal dislike to them.  Then, they’re totally going to get screwed.

Lucy Atwell (Joan Collins), for instance, has always fantasized about going back to ancient Egypt and living the life of Cleopatra.  Now, you may wonder why that is, seeing as how Cleopatra lost every man that she ever loved and was eventually killed by an asp.  But no matter!  Mr. Roarke sends Lucy into the past and Lucy quickly discovers that …. wait a minute!  She’s not Cleopatra!  Instead, she’s a part of the harem of Ptolemy (Michael Ansara)!  What the Hell, Mr. Roarke!?  What part of “I want to be Queen of Egypt” sounds like “I want to be a part of some old guy’s harem?”

However, Lucy does look exactly like the real Cleopatra and that might be useful, seeing as how the real Cleopatra is currently being held prisoner.  After a proper amount of royal training, Lucy fills in for Cleopatra and gets to meet and fall in love with Marc Anthony (Ron Ely).  When the real Cleopatra is killed by an asp, the fake Cleopatra gets to rule Egypt and it all works out nicely until …. the fantasy ends.

Oh well, it was a nice weekend.  Time for Lucy to go home except …. who is that waiting for the airplane?  Why, it’s Marc Anthony!  Except his real name is Eric Williams and apparently, he was just a guy living out a fantasy of his own.  He always wanted to know what it would be like to be Marc Anthony because who hasn’t fantasized about briefly ruling Rome and then being exiled and hounded to death by the forces of Augustus?  Anyway, Lucy finds her love and Joan Collins finally gets to play Cleopatra, the role that she was nearly awarded in 1960 before Elizabeth Taylor was selected instead.

Meanwhile, in the episode’s comedic fantasy, dorky Fred Webster (Larry Linville) wants to impress his girlfriend, Laura (Julie Sommars) by being telekinetic.  What?  Seriously, that’s how he wants to impress her?  I mean, it’s Fantasy Island!  Ask for a better job or a nicer car or something.  Anyway, Fred gets his power of telekinesis and uses it to cheat at gambling.  This brings him to the attention of Stephanie (Carol Lynley) and her goons.  When Fred realizes that Stephanie is evil, Stephanie has Laura kidnapped but she’s forgotten that Fred has telekinesis and can just mentally cause a fishing net to wrap up her and her men.  This was an extremely silly fantasy.  In fact, it was too silly for its own good, right down to the scenes where Fred’s eyes take on a green glow while he uses his powers.

This was a pretty forgettable episode but at least there were some nice costumes in the Egyptian fantasy.  Next week, season 3 comes to an end.

Retro Television Reviews: The Love Boat 1.6 “The Joker Is Mild / Take My Granddaughter, Please / First Time Out”

The Love Boat 1.5 “The Joker Is Mild / Take My Granddaughter, Please / First Time Out”

(Dir by Richard Kinon and Alan Rafkin, originally aired on October 29th, 1977)

This week’s cruise is all about remaining true to yourself!

For instance, Julie makes what appears to be a big mistake when she agrees to let a washed-up comic named Barry Keys (Phil Foster) do a show in the ship’s lounge.  Throughout the cruise, Barry gets on everyone’s nerves with his old-fashioned jokes and his vaudeville stylings.  Captain Stubing gives Julie an annoyed look whenever Barry starts to speak.  Julie knows that her career is on the line but she made a promise.  And Barry, it turns out, know what he’s doing.  When it comes time for his performance, he asks for a stool so that he can sit in the middle of the stage and talk about the generation gap.  (“Let’s rap, as the kids say,” Barry says.)  Hooray!  Barry has revived his career and Julie still has a job.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Warner (Ruth Gordon) is determined to find a husband for her granddaughter, Shirley (Patty Duke, who spends the entire episode looking as if she’s wondering how she could go from winning an Oscar to this).  Shirley would like to hook up with the pleasantly bland Dave King (played by Tab Hunter).  Mrs. Warner wants her to go out with Dr. Bricker!  In the end, Shirley stands up for herself, as any single 30 year-old should.  (To be honest, I thought Patty Duke’s character was closer to 40 but that’s mostly the fault of whoever in the costume department decided to make her wear some of the least flattering outfits available.)  It’s all for the best.  Dave is a nice guy and Doc has an exam room full of pornographic magazines to take care of.

Finally, a group of college students board the ship with one mission in mind.  They want their friend Dan (Robert Hegyes, who has a truly impressive head of hair) to lose his virginity.  Dan, it turns out, is not only shy but he also has no idea how to talk to women.  Fortunately, her runs into Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick) and it turns out that Marica likes shy, socially awkward guys with a lot of hair.  Okay, technically Maureen is playing Barbara Holmes but seriously, we all know that Barbara was actually Marcia.

This was a majorly uneven episode.  Barry’s revised act didn’t seem any funnier than his old stuff and it was kind of hard to sympathize with Shirley and her inability to make her own decisions.  That said, Maureen McCormick and Robert Hegyes made for a cute couple and their storyline was the most satisfying of the episode.  Personally, I think this episode would have worked better if Ruth Gordon had played Maureen McCormick’s grandmother as opposed to Patty Duke’s.  McCormick was young enough that it would have been a bit less pathetic for her to be bossed around by her grandmother and one can imagine how Ruth Gordon would have reacted to McCormick picking hairy Dan over a doctor.

Oh well!  The important thing is that everything worked out in the end and love won’t hurt anymore.
